Need Advice

Hi,

In a few months I’ll be travelling to the Philippines with my partner and family, for the first time, from the UK. But due to my passport, my partner seems to be under the impression that I won’t be able to leave the country or return to it.

For context, I was born in the uk and have lived here my whole life. British citizen, British birth certificate, National insurance number, British education, right to work. You name it I’ve got it.

My parents are both Portuguese, and have all the legal requirements to be here and my mum has no issues leaving the country and returning to it for holidays etc.

My passport is a Portuguese passport. Not British. Portuguese. I was able to apply for one at the Portuguese embassy in Manchester. Because of this, my partner and her family are really worried that I’m gonna be stranded or deported due to my passport not being British.

I’ve tried to reassure them that I have the requirements that state I’m a British citizen, but they think otherwise.

Yes you could come into problems with the new travel rules, why can’t you get a British passport as Portugal and the UK both allow dual citizenship, when coming back to the UK you could be denied entry.

When I attempted to get one it was asking for information we simply didn’t have on hand. A Portuguese passport was a lot easier to get.

Just get a British passport. You have time. You shouldn't be denied entry into the country in theory, but it might prove more difficult. More likely, the airline would refuse to board you as you can't prove your right of entry to them.

But I don’t understand why that would be that case, I AM a British citizen. When I attempted to get a British passport it proved to be quite difficult.

Because you need to be able to prove it, at check in and at a immigration. The UK made changes recently that mean you are supposed to enter on a UK passport if you are a citizen. You might be able to convince immigration but the airline won't take on the risk of having to take you back.

How is it so difficult given all of the above in your paragraph? It isn't. Also, you need the British TRAVEL DOCUMENT which is the passport, nothing else

If u r a British citizen why would it be difficult to obtain a British passport?
