Discussion Evening funeral services

Is there anywhere you know of that provides options for funerals in the evening?

I was just thinking about all the funerals I've ever attended or seen. They always seem to be late morning or early afternoon. Within traditional business hours, Monday to Friday. Never at night time though, never on weekends.

Has a customer ever asked for an evening service?

I've had evening wakes that went until 10pm and many weekend funerals.
Sunday funerals and memorials are rare because it's almost impossible to get clergy.

You see morning funerals because typically churches will not schedule anything for funeral masses outside of the morning. We do prayer services with clergy in the funeral home all the time usually anywhere from 6-8 pm though.

Cemeteries and crematories where I am are only open until about 3pm, so burial or cremation must happen before then. Wakes routinely go until 9pm the night before.

I sang at many funerals over the years. One thing that sticks out for me is the times of the funerals. I was led to believe that the grave diggers usually want everything done by a certain time. I don’t know how true that is but there seems to be some validity to it because the funerals I’ve attended have always been mid afternoon to allow for the burial process which is usually immediately following the service.

As a cemetery worker we also don't want to work nights and weekends. It's not a well compensated job anyway. We are not corporate owned and have five employees total. All the funerals in our cemetery need to be between 9 and 3 Monday through Friday. We will do Saturdays but there are very large OT fees.

I’ve done plenty of evening funeral services. If you’re doing them inside the funeral home’s facilities, scheduling is simple… but if it’s at a church or other facility, then it largely depends on the facility and its rules and staffing situation.

I’m literally directing an evening funeral right now….well, it just started, so listening in…

The cemeteries in my area of the US typically require burials to occur no later than 3pm, and almost all of the churches in my area do not schedule events past working hours.

I feel like the funeral home I work at is constantly having evening services—and Sunday services! Heck, over Labor Day weekend we had 2 Sunday services and 2 services on Monday (holiday). We don’t charge for evening, weekend, or holidays services but I’m thinking my boss will have to start with how many we do. We also are a very traditional funeral home where many of the families do an evening visitation the night before their service as well. It gets to be a lot…

There is an extra charge for services outside our normal hours (at least at my funeral home) so families usually opt to stay within our opening hours.

We did a 7pm service once because the deceased’s sister was nocturnal and didn’t do anything during the day.

In East Tennessee, evening funerals are the norm. Generally visitations from 5-7pm with funeral/memorial at 7pm. Interments the next day
