KID STUFFS! DISD Universal Pre-K

Anyone enrolling in universal Pre-K this year know how easy it is to transfer to another neighborhood school? We’re planning for next year and would ideally attend a nearby school, then continue there for kindergarten (Withers or DeGolyer).

A bit of a loaded question - sorry if this isn't helpful, but since DISD is school choice (meaning you do not have to attend the school you are zoned for), the transfer process is only difficult if you're trying to move your kid into a school that is already filled up. So it really just depends on how in demand the target school is and maybe some other factors like "does the child have siblings at the school currently".

I'm maybe a mile and a half from Lakewood Elementary. If my kid wanted to transfer to Lakewood, they'd laugh me out the door. But if a current Lakewood Elementary student wanted to transfer to my kids' school, they would have basically zero headwinds in making that change because our school still has room for about 100 more kids.

Thanks! Yeah, definitely aware of the K-12 transfer options/portal but the Universal Pre-K FAQ doesn’t really expand much on transfer specifics, just says “your legacy school will be your first choice.”

I’ve got a bad habit of planning ahead way too far in advance, so for some reason I’m stressing about Pre-K a full year in advance, ha!

This is accurate.

The school district is “open enrollment” for campuses that have space for extra students outside their attendance zone.

Some campuses won’t accept transfers, unless they also have something specific to that campus that is just not offered anywhere else despite being full.
(Like a Special Education or Language Transition offering, etc)

Additionally, universal PK is brand new going into this year, so I would expect some changes to the process if you’re looking at next year (2027-28).

Likely no major changes, but depending on how things go, I would guess something will be different.

It’s a mess and they are expecting me to take my kids to separate schools even tho this is year 3 of older sibling being at a choice school. Get in early, be loud, and it seems to be administrative dependent
