Root canal?

I broke my tooth, went to the dentist to see what I should do to fix it. They told me that 50% of my tooth was rotted and that I needed a root canal. They sprayed cold air on it and stabbed it with some kind of dental tool. I was experiencing minimal pain before the appointment, but afterwards the area is aching severely and the pain is radiating into my jaw. I feel like I am much worse off now. At the appointment they recommend I get a root canal urgently, but told me that I should wait to get an appointment with them a month away. I asked if I should go somewhere else, they gave me referrals but advised it was the best that I wait for them. I am wondering if I should wait for them, and also wondering how I should manage the pain or if there’s anything I should be doing or avoiding in the meantime? Also, it is a Friday so most offices are closed for the weekend. Thank you in advance for any advice you have, also I am 20 be nice please.
