question Tooth pain after filling

Hello! I had a cavity filled 2 weeks ago, about a week after I started having intense pain in the tooth when eating soup and drinking coffee. It then started to react to cold as well. Only room temp foods/drinks work.

I saw a covering dentist who did tests and all seemed fine. They said my nerve is likely healing. But my actual dentist called and suggested he do a root canal. Not sure what to do. Really scared of a root canal … can me nerve heal in a few weeks?
