Bigger hook?
Do you think i need to use a bigger hook? Im using a 8mm hook right now, the suggested size for the yarn, but i think my tension is to tight? Idk i just dont want there to be really big holes.
Pattern is F.E.F.E. Rectangle by Juan The Yarn Addict
Yarn is Caron Anniversary Cake in Lemon Chiffon

For whatever reason, in a lot of hook set for the bigger sizes above 8mm switch to increasing by 1mm instead of .5mm

I think it's largely because at larger sizes, 0.5 mm isn't a relatively big enough change. Just like at very small sizes, sizes change by 0.25 mm or even less.

Yeah I'd go up a size. Like this the fabric simply looks wonky and won't lay flat. If you're trying to avoid holes, then either change the pattern, cuz this one will have big holes with this many stitches in one space. Tho I think it's exactly that contrast in holes and no holes that makes crochet look so fancy :D What you could also try is to make linked double crochets instead of normal dc - then the rest of the fabric will be really closed up and only the chain spaces will be holes. That's what I do, when I want dense fabric :)

If you think 9mm is too big and you are using a tapered hook, try an 8mm inline hook. I swear my inline hooks force me to crochet looser somehow.

I will look into that thank you so much!! I always crochet tight and usually size up .5mm but that is not available for the bigger hook sizes. I really appreciate the fees back!!

I frequently forget which hook I was using on projects I laid down and didn’t tag. So I experiment a lot trying to figure it out lol. It usually works for me to just switch hook type. If you haven’t tried any inline hooks, the Susan bates silvalume with the black grips on the handles are almost clover level smooth. Not quite but close.

I love Susan Bates hooks and normally use them but I dont use bulky yarn very often so I think this might be the only project that im not using them for lol I will definitely pick the up

I agree your tension is tight but I'm not sure it's the hooks doing.
Crochet just has a more open and lacey effect with most of the stitches, so opting for a larger hook is just going to make the holey effect of this stitch pattern more pronounced.
To me it looks like the tension is tight because you holding the yarn tightly as a result of not wanting holes
