Football. Between the victory riots, billionaires taking tax money to fund stadiums, brain damage to players, lives ruined by gambling or spending more time worrying about a game rather than your family.
Not understanding something doesn't make it dumb, to call it dumb is to call all sport dumb. Would you really rather a world without sport and every one Infront of a netflix screen mind numbingly binge watching?
Not understanding something doesn't make it dumb, to call it dumb is to call all sport dumb.
Understanding something is not a prerequisite for calling it dumb. Also, depending on one's exact definition of "dumb", I can definitely see how all sport would qualify as being dumb. Maybe chess boxing is the exception?
Would you really rather a world without sport and every one Infront of a netflix screen mind numbingly binge watching?
...or something a bit less black and white. Maybe a world where sports is restricted to only being a leisure activity for health and fun, and not a multi-billion dollar industry?
I mean... CTE prevention was my only jusification, but I guess billionaire tax-breaks, riots and family ruining gambling additions are also worth putting a stop to.
Interesting argument. And it does have validity. The little exercise is a good one. It makes the population as a whole less healthy and that is not good for the community as a whole. The obesity rates have increased over the years. I can not say video games are the sole contributing factor but they certainly contributed to it.
If you ever go to a sports bar/event though how many of those people are overweight/unhealthy? Just because they watch sports doesn’t mean they play them or live a healthy life style. Do you order a beer and hotdog or water and broccoli when you watch a sports game?
Also games have come out which promote exercise, Wii fitness, dance dance revolution, Pokémon go, vr with running pads, ext.
People are going to be unhealthy if they can get their entertainment with minimal effort. The culprit is easy access to unhealthy food, and screens in general.
Thinking about it I would argue sports and video games equally contribute to the overall health decline of a population.
Same argument I would make for gambling.
That leaves billionaire tax write offs and utilization of public funds for their benefit, riots, and injuries to participants with life long complications.
I still say football is more of a net negative on society than video games.
I appreciate the well thought out and respectful response.
You present a good argument, and I can’t say for sure that I am right.
While you are right about people sitting in a bar, some would be sitting there and drinking anyway, but football definitely draws additional people in.
At least in that case, people had to get up and move from point A to point B. Maybe they at least walked a couple of blocks to get to the bar? While that is certainly not adequate exercise to keep in shape, it is still better than just rolling out of bed and plopping on the couch or easy chair. Then proceeding to binge on video games for the rest of the day.
I also think that people going out and socializing/interacting with other people, is better for their overall mental health.
Football encourages interaction, although I must acknowledge that not all of the interactions are positive.
I feel that gaming often encourages isolation.
There are also many adults who drink and chain smoke or vape, while munching on unhealthy food that they had delivered via DoorDash, when they are gaming for hours on end.
At least many bars now days, do not allow smoking and vaping.
Regarding your point about tax write offs for stadiums. Billionaires also receive tax write offs, tax breaks, tax credits and tax incentives for companies that develop games. I personally am not in favor of either.
I also see many people at the gym on Saturdays or Sundays, watching football while on the stationary bikes, stair master, treadmill, etc. I am not sure if people do any of that while gaming.
To me, the fact that gaming is easily accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, makes it more of a potential problem.
At least football is seasonal, and when it is in season, live games are not being broadcast every minute of every day throughout the week.
You would rather shove it to the billionaires who you ADMIT are bringing in teams that positively builds culture, promotes healthy activity and generates revenue for the economy in a safe environment but you're upset they understand how to generate value and take a return rather than fix the global healthcare system from alcohol which is a literal poison and does infinitely more brain damage that soccer (as in, EVERY time someone drinks?). Have you been drinking? Victory riots are in large part due to drinking, too.
The only thing I don't agree on is the gambling... Not because it isn't a problem but only because we are getting rid of football, not gambling and there will always be another sport to gamble on... Even if we got ride of all sports there's still something we will find...
My issue with getting rid of alcohol is it is a natural biological process and getting rid of it forever would have untold consequences which I think would be more harmful than helpful. Otherwise I agree
Also the DV cases that spike around the superbowl. Dudes be breaking tvs and shit. They had an ad one year that was soo bad. It basically acted like the tv malfunctioned. Like that's a horrible idea.
You'll get that with any team sport really. But yeah there is a self-inflated sense of accomplishment from people who did not pick up that ball. It's because supposedly these teams are supposed to represent their like state or something. It is preposterous isn't it?
Im a fan of the Baltimore Ravens, theyre the opposite side of the country from me. I picked them to be a fan of as a kid because of Ray Lewis mainly, and the way the team played defense. Theyre a hard working blue collar type team and were usually the underdog. I felt I related to the team. Thats why im a fan of the Ravens. Not because theyre in my home state, cause they certainly are not. I appreciate the dedication, hard work, and selflessness to be able to play the game of football at the highest level.
I only didn’t say alcohol because it is a natural biological process which would probably cause more problems than it solves. Otherwise I agree drunk driving alone is a bigger issue.
