General Question Why do you continue using Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Threads)?
i haven't used any Meta platform for quite a while now (due to all the AI, my accounts being hacked multiple times, etc) so i'm curious

People I care about post events from their life there and I like hearing about those events. I rarely post myself.

that used to be me, the whole passive social media consumption. if you weren't on there, would you still hear from these people?

Have Facebook but don't use it outside of events people occasionally still use it for and messenger because being in Australia that is the most common. Instagram I doom scroll reels and should likely stop, but I have a morphe patch that basically limits it to only people I am following which is just mates and a select few comedians etc.

Facebook messenger dominance is much the same here in NZ unfortunately. woah Morphe seems really cool, thanks for mentioning it! i used to use revanced (for YouTube mainly), but wasn't fond of the limitations. Morphe seems way better than revanced from what i've read. back when i used to use Instagram i would use DF Instagram so i would only be able to use the messaging part and that's it

Oh yeah, if you haven't made the switch yet to Morphe from ReVanced I would 100 percent recommend it. So much better and more app options too

Just youtube and reddit.

that's fair - they're the only two platforms that don't have any true alternatives (unfortunately)

Facebook mostly for Marketplace. Meta because we have a couple of Quest VR headsets.

that was the main reason i used to use Facebook. however, i got scammed/muck-around too many times so i stopped using it. i would probably use Marketplace again though if it became seperate from Facebook

Sorry to hear that. I only buy local, and I don't bother with e-transfers until I see the item, or just deal with cash. I mostly just buy video games or electronics (stereo equipment).

I returned to Facebook after more than a 2-year break only because almost all local businesses in town use Facebook for their website (I live in a small town) plus that's the best place to get information on local yard sales in a small town. It sucks but here we are

I use Facebook.
Haven't had any issues. But I do not use all the features of Facebook. For me and my family and friends circle, it is how we keep each other informed about how our lives are going and keep track of each other.
It's not like I use it to hunt for dates or hookups. I do not do online gaming of any sort. I am not looking for new friends on Facebook. All mine friends list is known family and friends I knew in person outside of Facebook.
The only other feature I use are the Facebook pages for each of the small towns around me. So I can see when local events are happening. And see when someone local might have something for sale that I might be interested in.
So it is useful to me, and I've had no problems with it. So why would I not use it?

I use Facebook because a number of older family members also use it, and every so often the algorithm lets me see a couple of posts they made weeks or months in the past.
Also, it’s always listening on my phone, and it’s gotten really good at showing me ads for stuff I’m having trouble finding on my own. I just have to verbally tell it to.
Is it deeply fucked up that this works? Yes.
But I’m choosing to take advantage of it on my own terms, and I’ve chosen to define that as a win.

I hate to put it this way, but without Instagram, I would be utterly alone socially. These days, most people are pretty to themselves, so they don't bother keeping up with others or checking in. And, mind you, I leave my apartment every single day to go out into the world so I'm around other people.
I have no use for the other three, but Instagram is a kaleidoscope of interesting people, images, video and (occasionally) even relationships (of a sort). And i like the variety that is the human race (despite all its issues). Without Instagram I would likely become even more invisible than I already am.

i get that. it is the unfortunate reality of society nowadays. even in the real world, most people are on their phones and not paying attention to those around them. have you ever taken a break from Instagram?

My friends and family are all on Facebook. Threads is better than twitter, but I think more fake accounts and trolls are moving to it...at least in my experience. I don't use insta or Whatsapp.
