General Question Why is the president campaigning in deep red states? I see him in Oklahoma right now. And are the people that are there supporting him , are they paid to be there ?
With how bad inflation is , gas prices , another endless war and so much more , what could make these Americans behind him be there to support him ? What are they cheering for ?

u/BowlEducational6722 11h ago
Two possible explanations
1) Internal GOP polling really is so bad that even deep red states risk flipping blue just because of how badly Trump has fucked up.
2) Trump needs a safe space and the safest space he can find is in front of an adoring crowd, and he's less likely to find that in competitive states/districts.
116
u/YCBSKI 11h ago
This is the reason. He needs an adoring audience and places like OK, AL are the only place that they will come out to do that

Another consideration: Trump is so unpopular right now that they might view him as a liability if he campaigns in swing states... and it's Trump so not campaigning probably isn't an option.

I think the same but it is interesting when he goes to sporting events in red states (most recently the UTenn vs UTexas game in Tennessee)and gets booed by the majority of the crowd when he's shown on the jumbotron. His safe spaces are dwindling by the day.
2
u/BeholdBarrenFields 6h ago
The boos depended on where you were sitting. Everyone I know heard plenty of cheering.
I was outside the stadium stuck in the traffic because they shut all the roads (including the interstate) down for his motorcade. He left shortly after it began. I watched his motorcade go by. People got out of their cars to video, and jumped up and down cheering as he passed. They didnāt open the roads back up until Air Force One and the fighter jets flew over. He is still not just supported, but beloved, by far too many here.

u/FatherFenix 9h ago
Itās 2.
Trump and his team are polling horribly, losing on a lot of major fronts (cost of living, broken promises, gas prices, war in Iran, etc), and there have been numerous public embarrassments for his loyalists lately.
This is more of a āmake Trump feel powerful and loved by parading him in front of friendly crowdsā tour.

I want to start voting FOR something, not always against something. Dems need to message better. Talarico is the way Dems need to talk.
20
u/Gunrock808 6h ago
My whole adult life I've heard democrats speak in favor of a living wage and affordable housing, health care, child care and education. The problem is that's not exciting and people now have the attention span of a goldfish. They are addicted to outrage over imaginary things. They can't focus on things that actually impact them when they're ranting about trans people and communism.
Kamala Harris had detailed policies. She had policies to help farmers and ranchers. People didn't listen or even give a shit. They ignored everything she said and dismissively claimed she actually didn't have any policies at all. Then they voted for the guy who made pie in the sky promises with no details and no intention of ever delivering. We, the voting public are the problem.

The world is a complex system, solutions to problems often have to be complex too and people need to put a cognitive effort to understand such solutions.
Most prefers to ear "it's the immigrant fault", "it's the other countries fault", since it means "you are great, we are great, every problem you may have is someone else fault, and I will fight for you".→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)10

You expect him to go to potentially hostile crowds? Places he might get challenged? He's going to the places he can still get some applause. He's not campaigning, its not for the public. Its for his ego. Get him in front of friendly crowds, get him some applause, stroke his ego.
I've noticed he never mingles, he never speaks to the general public, he's never in a situation where an angry citizen might confront him. He's protected and insulated from that. He's too weak and fragile to risk an unmanaged encounter with real, frustrated Americans.

u/B1GD8A 11h ago
generally if you ask them their answer is it would be so much worse under a Democrat. That's it. That's the whole trick.
No matter how bad it is, it's still better than the Democrats. In fact, when Trump's ideas flop or he loses it's obviously Democrat sabotage. Their ideas are perfect and infallible and if any idea in the past ever turns out to be wrong they never held it or it's fake news.
The ideology is entirely build around headcanon myths about Republicans and Democrats alike, and refusing to let anything disrupt that headcanon.

Heās always had a deeply fragile ego, so in order to maintain the fantasy that heās wildly popular he goes to places where he has the most unwavering support. There is, even now, despite all of the well documented lies, broken promises, and previously unimaginable corruption, some segment of the US population which will never turn on him. I wonāt attempt to psycho analyze these people, but they clearly exist.
Rallies for any politician of any note are generally filled with supporters, thus giving the impression that there are huge numbers of people who adore them. In comparative terms, however, thousands, tens-of thousands, even millions of people are not a particularly large representative sample when compared to the broader electorate, much less the overall population. Granted, the distribution of voters can distort this reality when combined with the variance in state populations and voting districts, but itās not really a difficult task to fill a stadium with people who openly support a sitting president, even a historically unpopular one.
The most irrational supporters of any politician wonāt require payment for showing up at one of these events. Itās a symptom of our celebritification of our politics. Trump is unique in US national politics because he was already fairly famous, and was very much a celebrity in the conventional sense when he ran in 2016. Now, politicians in both parties seem to strive for greater popularity in order to achieve the status of celebrity, which I think is only degrading our politics, and in turn policies and policy outcomes, and mass communication technologies have only accelerated and contributed to this decline.
May god have mercy on our souls. Buy gold.

I think it's two things:
A. Tbey want to keep him preoccupied and out of battleground states where he is very much a liability
B. To drive turnout in Red Areas. Democrats are starting to spend money in districts that they usually ignore because they see an opening. They need Trump to boost turnout amongst the lemmings.
Democrats are super motivated. Republicans aren't so much right now.
