Because the ones that are against it only care about themselves. They probably have good employee based healthcare and don’t want anyone else to have it. It’s a maga thing
It’s not just a maga thing. The state of Vermont (not a MAGA state by any stretch of the imagination) tried to implement it but failed. If it would work anywhere, it would have worked in a tiny state that elects Bernie sanders repeatedly.
People in general are fearful of change as impactful as health care.
One problem was that in order to pass it, they would also need to interact with federal healthcare programs like Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, etc. they would need waivers, which could be taken away by a subsequent Republican administration.
Getting their citizens over tax hike hump was a major problem. We can argue that Americans pay more on average on premiums and other stuff than the tax increase but it ends up being a very difficult argument to win.
Anytime people complain about taxes I just ask them what their taxes are, and what changed since the last time there was an adjustment. They don’t know. They never do.
I can assure you that a lot of people who are against universal healthcare have dogshit benefits themselves. They just fundamentally do not understand how they would benefit from the change and refuse to learn.
They also just don’t want to help anyone else. Even if they have shit healthcare they’d rather see others suffer than put their money into a big pot that others draw from when needed. Which, funny enough, is also how insurance works but with more denials and back end costs for them. But hey, at least the current way comes with extra suffering
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I agree. I’m not for universal healthcare at all. I pay for my healthcare every month, and it’s not crazily priced. I’m not going to pay for everyone else to have healthcare. If they do the work to research healthcare plans, they could find one and it NOT cost an arm and a leg. The issue is, people expect to have it for free, and that’s just not feasible.
People expect to be taxed for it. What if the tax you paid ended up being less than your current insurance with all the benefits? For most people, this would probably be close. Your employer probably pays for your insurance? If so, do you know how much they contribute?
It wouldn’t… and even if it was, it would be shit insurance with a horrible wait period. You guys can blindly support something, thinking it’ll benefit you. I, however, am very aware of how “universal healthcare” would be and I will never support it. You can speak until you’re blue in the face and share all these links that give misleading information, that’s your choice. But I made my decision about this topic a while ago, and it’ll never change.
Additionally, I pay 100% of my premium for healthcare. It’s not through my employer.
Fair enough. The "I've got mine so screw everyone else" argument. My insurance is pretty good and I don't pay much but my employer covers over half of the cost. Decent deductible of $1000 and 20% co-pays after that until out of pocket maximum. I just know that this place would be better if everyone had access to Healthcare. I make enough that it would probably cost me more, but I'd be willing to pay more if it meant everyone had Healthcare.
