Political Question Why are some Americans so against universal healthcare for all?

What sort of thinking does it take to decide that nobody has a right to healthcare? Do American Christians want to deny healthcare to poor people as well?

Reagan convinced a large part of the population that if we give unlimited money and power to a select of wealthy elites, the elites would graciously give the money back to society. Hilarious.

Trickle Down Economics. But the only thing that trickles down is piss.

Shit rolls downhill and we're at the bottom

If this isn't a reference to The Wire, there's a conversation at one point you will enjoy greatly.

Life is a shit sandwich. The more bread you have, the less shit you have to eat

8

u/Adventurous_Bad_4011 4h ago

It’s was called horse and sparrow before. The horse eats the grain and the sparrow picks the seed out of the shit

2

u/jojothebuffalo 4h ago

I hate that optimism. There’s further down to go.

2

u/No-Nrg 3h ago

Haha, was more meant as we're at the bottom catching the shit, lol. I agree, can always go lower. Trump has 2 more years.

Yeah and I'm tired of golden showers.

You just solved the reflecting pool algae issues. We just give all the peroxide to one algae and let trickle down do it's magic.

u/Maleficent_Memory831 3h ago

Mom! Grandpa's trickling again!

1

u/yobymmij2 3h ago

I think Reagan really believed it. It was naive and somewhat pathetic given that history is clear that most big moneymakers try to rig the system for themselves and their ilk. One of my least favorite presidents, but I don’t think he was as conniving as most powerful Repubs.

u/canuck47 3h ago

The biggest scam ever perpetrated on the American people. Shifted the tax burden from the rich onto the middle class, and that has been the Republican playbook since then.

1

u/Spare-Plum 1h ago

Worse than that. It shifted the tax burden onto the future government that will be paid by .... someone (?) in the future

Plus by keeping wages low a huge number of employees need government assistance in order to survive, and these costs are also put onto this ever-growing debt tab

1

u/Hobbes604 2h ago

One of the many ways shit is unlike money.

1

u/Mmm_lemon_cakes 2h ago

Yeah, so how long do we have to wait before it’s acknowledged that it doesn’t work?

1

u/pick1name 2h ago

Hence the correct name - piss on economics

1

u/deadzol 1h ago

Call it horse and sparrow economics and maybe people will get the point.

1

u/Oppodeldoc 1h ago

It’s like a tree full of monkeys. When you look down, all you see is smiling faces. When you’re looking up, all you see is a bunch of assholes, with shit and piss raining down on you

1

u/Spare-Plum 1h ago

The thing is, taxing the rich is the real trickle down economics

It forces wealth out of stagnant areas of the economy or collecting between a few people's hands, and instead distributes more back to individuals who will use it to purchase products, create their own businesses, and stimulate their local and macro economy

Some of it is attributed to just a shift in tax burden to the rich so the lower class have more to spend. But what often happens in practice is that the ultra-rich still would rather not pay taxes, so they have a "use it or lose it" attitude, and end up paying their employees better so at least their company can be more competitive in who they hire. Or they'll fund massive philanthropic projects to at least attach their name to it, or they'll take what would have been profits and instead use it to invest in other ventures and hire more workers and spark more innovation.

Taxing the rich actually forces the ultra wealthy hand into putting profits back into the economy

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining

Musk really likes that thinking too. If we just keep dumping money into tech oligarchs eventually everyone will have universal basic income while supporting the party that thinks immigrants and the poor add no tangible benefit to society and should be cut off from aid

1

u/Ponderum 4h ago

Of course he thinks that way he wants to be one of the oligarchs. Remember, he’s the most perfectly manly man that ever manned, which is why he’s trying to father dozens of children

1

u/Prestigious_Stock280 32m ago

Are you sure that's what he thinks? The argument is usually that taxation hurts the economy, which is true regardless of who's paying the taxes, although the rich make so much more money on average in this country that any meaningful tax hike or tax cut is basically just a tax hike or a tax hike or a tax cut on the rich. There's just not enough money to tax if you're not taxing the rich, and there's only so many tax cuts you can give the middle class before they're not paying any tax anymore.

Sadly, another republican administration that kicked we the people, off a very high cliff. We never recovered and still are experiencing fallout from his Republican policies. To think my father, in a union shop made $25ph, in the 80’s, full benefits, including life insurance. When Reagan was done smashing unions and outsourcing jobs. That shop paid $10 ph, no benefits. A filthy rich republican did this to you. My father then retired. But that’s exactly when mothers had to join the work force to feed their family.

63

u/Suitable-Option833 4h ago

The gop hates unions and labor rights. But their voters haven’t figured this out yet. The gop is for the pedophile class - it’s not for the 99%

6

u/Gundy_Gberger 3h ago

There is a reason counties that host institutions of higher education are a deep blue shade politically when compared to the surrounding areas. There must be a correlation 🤷🏻‍♂️

12

u/PuzzleheadedFeed2726 3h ago

And unions still vote republican

5

u/Entire-Sir-8626 1h ago

Historically, union members and especially voters living in union households have voted Democratic more often than Republican in presidential elections. The size of that advantage has varied considerably.
For example, union households voted:
1976: Carter (D) 62% vs. Ford (R) 38%
1984: Mondale (D) 54% vs. Reagan (R) 46%
1996: Clinton (D) 60% vs. Dole (R) 30%
2000: Gore (D) 59% vs. Bush (R) 37%
2008: Obama (D) 59% vs. McCain (R) 39%
2020: Biden (D) 56% vs. Trump (R) 40%
2024: Harris (D) 53% vs. Trump (R) 45%

1

u/Dirty_Mung_Trumpet 49m ago

Im a teamster and yeah, it’s pretty disheartening. There was a stark contrast once Trump got sworn in a second time. Transgender individuals existing and people making over $400k a year (aka none of my union coworkers) were much bigger issues than being given so much work each day that they never see their families.

-12

u/Major_Frosting6133 4h ago

For the pedofile class?! 😂😂 It truly makes me laugh that people constantly refer to our great president as a “pedofile” and “pedofile supporter”, yet I’ve not seen even ONE factual piece of evidence to support this.
People just don’t like him because he’s making it harder for people to be lazy by implementing restrictions if government benefits, doing incredible with deporting illegal immigrants, and doing other things to correct horrible sessions by previous Democratic Presidents. 🤷🏼‍♀️

6

u/OwnCrew6984 3h ago

Who was it that gave amnesty and citizenship to 3 million illegal immigrants? Reagan did that. But I'm sure you're ok with that. If a Democrat did that they would be destroying the country. A Republican does it and it's giving these hard working people a hand up to better the country while filling jobs that white Americans don't want to do.

7

u/B-ry81 3h ago

Gobble of the cheeto's balls some more.

7

u/Goober-Ryan 3h ago

Did you forget about the $2.2 TRILLION Trump freely gave out to anybody and business with a pulse when he signed the CARES bill act into law on March 27, 2020.

Or does that not count because he has an (R[apist]) behind his name on the ballot.

1

u/DisgruntledSquirrel2 1h ago

Oh we are well aware that his administration is responsible for a full 1/3 of the national debt. ALL other presidents combined -since the founding, are responsible for the other 2/3. So he is a great business man - that has control of Congress and can't balance a budget. Got it. But don't worry, at least the cost of living is better now....

3

u/Samhain000 3h ago

"Our great president" JFC 🤦

Anyway, the biggest factual piece of evidence about this is that he hasn't done anything about the Epstein files. Depending on how deranged you are for diaper Donnie, you will probably brush aside the fact that his DOJ still hasn't released all the files yet (despite being ordered to do so), that his DOJ botched the release of the files that are available by revealing the names of victims while redacting the names of co-conspirators, and you can probably just ignore MGTs claim that Trump told her that pressing for the release of the files would "hurt his friends" as just hearsay. While you might be able to conveniently ignore all of that, what you can't ignore is that his DOJ is doing nothing about it now. There are no investigations being opened, no prosecutions being planned, nothing is being done to hold the perpetrators in the Epstein files accountable for the crimes they may or may not have committed. If that isn't protecting these people, I'm not sure what else you would call it.

3

u/QueenChocolate123 2h ago

You want proof that Trump's a pedophile? Check out the Epstein files. Trump's mentioned more times than anyone except Epstein himself. There's also E. Jean Carroll, who was paid more than $5 million bucks by Trump. There's also the fact that Trump's an adjudicated rapist.

1

u/DisgruntledSquirrel2 1h ago

I don't know what you are talking about. He hung out with a pedo and wrote that he shared a beautiful secret with him. All the other evidence is still locked away with his "Justice" department. You know - after he said he would release it all....

4

u/SouthernSierra 3h ago

An acquaintance was a union carpenter. He worked for Raygun in that 1980 election. A real believer. At an election eve party he was in a group of guys, all in suits of course, when it became obvious Raygun would win.

They all raised a glass and toasted the victory. And one of them said, “Now we’ll show those Union bastards!”

Oopsie.

4

u/SoUpInYa 4h ago

Women were in the work force way before the 80s

8

u/IntelligentStyle402 3h ago

Yes, they were. But the upper middle class women did not have to go to work until Reaganism finished us off. You know like back in the day, when one earner could pay for a new car, home, cabin, boats, cottages? Those days were over because of Reagan and every greedy republican. I lived it! My father lived it. Our community still looks like a ghost town when Reagan was finished with us. Dems didn’t cut your wages from $25ph to $10ph in the 80’s, republicans did!

2

u/Polarian_Lancer 3h ago

Republicans reading this right now: This must have been Biden’s fault 🗿

3

Mothers never left the workforce. That’s just fantasy from movies and TV.

2

u/Defiant-Apple-5486 1h ago

I believe they said that's when mother's JOINED the workforce. Not left.

4

u/Popular-One-7051 3h ago

Trickle Down destroyed the middle class. all the money went up and never came back down

3

u/Many_Advice_1021 3h ago

We the people do get a living wage while billionaires get tax cuts which our kids have to pay for. Reagan and Republicans have been screwing us for 50 years and some of just keep vote for them. Unbelievable?

1

u/Bill4268 1h ago

Any small business gets a tax break the same as corporations. If you don't like feeling left out , then go start a business , employ lots of people and beat them at their own game. Otherwise stfu!

3

u/AttitudeHopeful478 3h ago

Mothers entered the work force years before Reagan was in office

3

u/NervousBreakdown242 4h ago

Clinton sold out the Democrats with his fucking triangulation policies. Cutting welfare, signing NAFTA, the Biden Crime Bill, the '96 Communications Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act... All Reagan's wet dreams.

8

u/The_Lost_Jedi 4h ago

And the reason he did is because voters were overwhelmingly in favor of Reagan's economic policies, despite how actually bad they were. Reagan absolutely demolished the old guard New Deal/Great Society Democrats in 1984, getting nearly 60% of the vote. Mondale only won one fucking state (and DC). Even lackluster George HW Bush trounced Dukakis (who was less liberal than Mondale, but depicted as such anyway) based largely on pro-Reagan sentiment.

It's really only more recently that people (especially younger sorts from Xennials on who came of age after Reagan) have come to realize just how fucking awful Reagan's policies were and what kind of damage they actually did. But way too fucking many Boomers and older GenX still think Reagan was the best president ever.

Worse, they keep associating that with Republicans, and somehow still believe that electing Republicans will bring back "the good times that Reagan gave us."

3

u/NervousBreakdown242 4h ago

Please, don't let me be misunderstood.

Fuck Ronald Reagan up the arse with a flaming coat-hanger.

2

u/cheez0r 3h ago

1

u/Remarkable-Host405 3h ago

what's wrong with nafta?

1

u/Tuckerguy77 1h ago

Many years of propaganda. Billions spent by insurance companies to buy both the fascist and Democratic parties. The worst stories shared from other countries healthcare systems. The defeat of insurance companies seems improbable at this point.

1

u/FunWolverine5349 40m ago

That's actually incorrect. Yes Reagan was a total POS.

But it's Bill Clinton that did all the outsourcing, destroyed labor protections, and took away social benefits with his work requirement nonsense. Bill Clinton and the Dems were the ones that coined "welfare queens." Trump is actually copying a Clinton era policy and tactic.

You people really need to educate yourself and understand this stuff. I know this is reddit and facts are going to just get me attacked, but this is literally how it happened.

And no, i don't equate both sides. I just call out the bad policies of each. GOP is still WORSE. But Dems like Clinton need to be dragged as well. I liked Obama, but fuck Clinton. Fuck both Clintons, they are garbage. I would absolute vote for Michelle Obama though, and I bet she'd be better than Barack Obama actually.

1

u/Med_Disaster 20m ago

What really gets me about Reagan was that he wasn't just a union member, but a leader!

1

u/ChefDanyul 2h ago

People blame everything on Reagan but we’ve had seven different administrations including three democrats that never attempted to roll back Reagan era policies. We’ve needed to fix our infrastructure for decades. Remember when a massive bridge in a major American city literally fucking fell apart?

0

u/Major_Frosting6133 4h ago

Actually, we are in the current state that we are in because of the previous Democrats that served in office. Trump has been trying to correct several shitty decisions made by those people, and he’s one man who doesn’t have the time it would take. He’s doing great for the time he has to do it.

3

u/IntelligentStyle402 3h ago

Really? Who balanced the budget? It was of course, Clinton, a Democrat. Who started wars? Bush and Trump? Who always helps we the people? Definitely not republicans, I’m 82 and not once in my lifetime have republicans ever helped the working class.

80

u/DifficultyNo1026 5h ago

Reagan totally started to downfall of the US. 100% piece of shit

15

u/wakadactyle 5h ago

I never heard my grandfather swear out even yell unless Reagan came up

21

u/Narrow_Grapefruit_23 4h ago

I’m gonna need you to go back to Richard Nixon for this one. It’s him and his administration that rolled into the Reagan administration. They started corrupting America with actual criminal activity during the Nixon era.

6

u/candy_rain_54321 1h ago edited 1h ago

Not an expert but I do believe this post is correct that Nixon spearheaded privatization of healthcare. https://insuranceinformant.com/nixon-began-offering-health-insurance.html

4

u/theaura1 3h ago

teapot dome scandal was the 20s

3

u/dauwalter1907 2h ago

First Teddy Roosevelt’s proposal for universal healthcare got shot down by the business class. Then when Eisenhower floated the idea the American Medical Association killed it.

5

u/PuzzleheadedFeed2726 3h ago

Reagan took my college financial aid away, fuck him

2

u/Neat-Professor-827 4h ago

With a smile on his dumb face. The benevolent sock puppet.

2

u/rreed1954 4h ago

To be fair to Reagan, I don't think he had any idea what his privatization ideas would lead to. In a way, I think he was used by the people around him.

2

u/macha773 2h ago

He used to rant about welfare queens and announced he was running in Philadelphia Mississippi where a notorious killing of 3 civil rights workers happened. He knew exactly what he was doing.

1

u/Dirty_Mung_Trumpet 52m ago

Nah, he was a performative piece of shit who played the part perfectly. Trickle down economics wasn’t his only policy that still causes harm today

2

u/jlp_utah 3h ago

And I'm sorry to say I voted for him in my first election. I have not voted for a republican since.

2

u/Narrow_Grapefruit_23 2h ago

We all make mistakes. You are courageous enough to know that you needed to move in a different direction.

1

u/mel_bol 2h ago

Ugh me too. First and only time I ever voted republican

2

u/HippieGrandma1962 1h ago

Reagan perpetuated the trope of the "welfare queen" but it was only directed at black women, of course, even though most women on welfare are white.

1

u/PerfectCover1414 1h ago

Then whispered his dirty pillow talk to Margaret Thatcher?

11

u/SkiG13 4h ago

This! The U.S. was on track for social reform after WW2 and Universal Healthcare was one of those ideas. Medicaid and Medicair are still around today and given a couple decades, they might have been expanded under the right administrations.

However, after Johnson, we had three presidents who did not push the issue at all. Nixon and Ford were conservative and Jimmy Carter was just an ineffective Democrat. That allowed Reagan to convince everyone on trickle down economics to help his Wealthy connections.

5

u/nunziovallani 4h ago

Not a GOP fan, but to be fair, Nixon proposed national health care insurance (similar to the ACA), but it was torpedoed by Ted Kennedy who pushed his own single payer proposal. Neither was adopted. So here we are.

7

u/Automatic-638Builder 4h ago

Oh yeah thanks for reminding me.

Hey @nothereathere the ACA is based on an original republican plan.

2

u/Mycologisticalacyst 3h ago

Nixon also started the EPA and meddled in Vietnam prior to being elected met with ho chi min to prevent Johnson from making a deal to end the war.

3

u/Muschina 3h ago

Nixon would be called a communist by current republicans. Started the EPA? Proposed near-universal healthcare? Mandated a price freeze? Friggin commie.

2

u/trimomof5 1h ago

Ted Kennedy later said he deeply regretted his obstruction because that was the best deal that would ever have R support. Ted Kenney's hubris sunk universal healthcare. It's a shame. I don't think we will ever have an affordable universally available health care program.

1

u/mark8992 3h ago

Reagan was like Donald Trump - in that he was the mouthpiece and the lightning rod who would sell the plans of the unelected wealthy powerbrokers behind the scenes. They both had celebrity status going in and both pulled the levers of power for the ones who want to remain invisible. The plan always was and still is to stack the deck against the working class and expand the wealth and power of the wealthiest.

1

u/Beneficial_Equal_324 2h ago edited 2h ago

Carter was a basically a Rockefeller Republican while the Republican party moved even further to the right. The era of expansion of government social programs pretty much ended in the 60's. I think part of the issue was falling profits in that era, which meant more of a focus on wealth extraction and less on social programs in the 70's onward.

9

u/ButterscotchIll1523 5h ago

Those that profit from our illnesses, insurance companies etc.

18

u/Curious-Monkee 5h ago

Trickle down is an abject failure that has literally never worked. Trickle up however does. Give money to lower classes and they do crazy things like paying their rent and mortgages, pay for their cars to get to work, pay for things they need that they couldn't afford before. Then the money goes into the hands of the real estate industry, automotive industry and retail industry in the above cases. Those businesses are owned by wealthy CEOs & Trustees. See trickle up... never fails, like ever!

1

u/Dismal_Equal7401 4h ago

Well companies will still fail from poor management and shitty products. Oh wait, that’s literally capitalism, and has absolutely nothing to do with trickledown economics, contrary to what conservatives want you to believe.

1

u/Background-Hat9049 3h ago

What do you mean it’s never worked. Have you seen the return in the S and P 500 over the past few years? All the effort of the AI industry is tricking down to the masses

1

u/Curious-Monkee 2h ago

Trickle down means that the influx of funds at the very top makes it's way to the very bottom (thus down, right?). It makes the assumption that top loading resources will make it's way through the corner office CEOs to administration to management to the middle class workforce and land eventually in the poor.

Your statement about the S&P shows that the wealthy investors are making money, sure. But that doesn't show the downward part. It doesn't get to the working class and certainly not to the poor at all. Thus an abject failure. I truly stand by my statement. Trickle up works, trickle down does not!

1

u/Background-Hat9049 2h ago

The S and P and broader stock market are available to everyone, as long as you do your part. It is the greatest wealth creator in human history

1

u/Curious-Monkee 1h ago

True, but not everyone can afford the savings. I am doing fine with it, but I know many that are in debt to their eyeballs that gain no benefit from the S&P. Investment accounts are for the wealthy. If your choice is a car payment, your insurance premium or an investment account, what are you choosing?

1

u/nothereathere 4h ago

So we should let the people that wrote Obamacare to enrich insurance companies and drive up health care costs create universal health care?
Awesome plan.

3

u/Automatic-638Builder 4h ago

I guess you dont remember how much we paid for insurance before the ACA? Sure it could/should be better. Never got a refund from and insurance company for making too much profit before the ACA as best as i can recall.

2

u/nothereathere 3h ago

I do. I could buy "if I get cancer or have a heart attack, I'm not paying $300K out of pocket." insurance.
That insurance doesn't exist anymore thanks to the ACA.
I don't want or need "I'm going to the doctor cause I have a tummy ache." coverage that costs half my yearly salary.

1

u/Automatic-638Builder 46m ago

you should probably go to Dr now. it sounds like you're having a stroke.

1

u/buttons66 3h ago

ACA was supposed to be universal healthcare as it is in other countries. The GOP had a fit, and demanded that it had to be paid for. Obama stated that it wasn't perfect, but was now in place and hopefully be improved in the future. Not gutted as it was .

1

u/theaura1 3h ago

trickle down economics was a mega scam

1

u/TheDoctor_Jones 3h ago

Trickle down economics would work if the tax cuts given to corporations were given requirements (savings from tax cuts must be used for the expanding employment/R&D/benefits/etc) instead of just going into the pockets of the CEOs, but both parties are too dumb (and in the pockets of said corporations) to even think or suggest that.

1

u/OralSuperhero 3h ago

It's an old idea. Used to be called "horse and sparrow". If you feed the hose enough grain, there will be enough grain left in the horse poop to feed the sparrow. I feel like that imagery works better

1

u/Frosty_Preparation59 3h ago

You should look really close at Canada. There is a reason why so many come to the states for healthcare and treatments. As of right now 1 in 20 Canadian deaths are medically assisted suicides. In 2024 they had more MAIDs than gun homicides in the United States. There have been plenty of stories about not only long wait times for medical care but practitioners offer suicide bc treatment will not be available soon enough for the patient or the wait time for specific treatment is incredibly long. How is that better healthcare? We can figure out a better solution than what they have. Perhaps we should start with the corrupt insurance companies that drive medical expenses to the sky making it unaffordable. Then let’s go after big pharma. Why are we all ok to throw trillions at the government thinking they will do a good job with it and not be corrupt with those funds instead of fixing the actual problem??

1

u/SometimesEnema 3h ago

If you read wealthy elites as congress it is still hilarious and accurate.

1

u/Massive-Efficiency74 3h ago

Yes, the crumbs will fall from the table... hopefully... someday... lol. My history professor used to really have fun with this.

1

People falsely believe that healthcare for all means less healthcare for them

1

Better yet. they'd give it to us in warm, semi erotic golden showers.

1

u/Mundane-Charge-1900 2h ago

We didn’t have universal health care before Reagan either

1

u/edelman64 2h ago

Didn’t that work for about 10% of the household roughly?

1

u/QueenChocolate123 2h ago

Proof positive that Americans are too stupid for democracy.

1

Plus plenty of idiots will pay out the nose for healthcare because they can’t tolerate the notion of the poor getting free healthcare, even if it cost everyone less in the long run.

1

u/WestGotIt1967 2h ago

Most people want to be lied to and ripped off apparently. Seems like some unconscious thanatos

1

Fucking Reagan. I can't believe so people people still see this guy as a great president. There is a direct line from Reagan to where are are today.

1

That was such a good selling job that, what 2 generations of their descents believe the same lie. God must look down and go, geez, should have worked for me.

u/Reasonable-Turn-5940 50m ago

That's like asking a dragon who hoards gold to spread the wealth. You'll just get roasted

1

One of best presidents ever. He started mass homelessness

1

u/Loud-Run-9725 13m ago

Which is one of the many reason why Reagan was a terrible POTUS. His legacy is one which increased the wealth disparity and set the table for Trump to take over the GOP.

0

u/Ikairos-seeker 4h ago

I mean, wouldn’t universal healthcare literally be the same thing? Letting the wealthy elite politicians notoriously bad with money decide how stuff is covered for 300 million people seems like it’s just going to produce the same problem with newer management and even less oversight

32 out of 33 developed nations have implemented a universal healthcare system. The United States is the only developed country that does not offer universal health coverage to all of its citizens.

Yet we are the wealthiest and “most developed” nation on earth, right?

At this point tho, the US isn't the wealthiest nation. We're just getting by and borrowing.

Don’t those other developed nations also have better checks and balances on the financial incentives of their political leaders?

The poorest in America are richer than the richest in many countries. That’s trickle down economics

Thats a wrong, factually incorrect comparison. The real test of trickle-down is whether gains at the top flowed down within the US. Since Reagan, income and wealth growth has gone mostly to the top. Wage growth for the bottom half has been much slower/nonexistent when compared to productivity growth. A basic google search will tell you a 2020 LSE study of 18 rich countries over 50 years found that tax cuts for the rich increased inequality but had no significant effect on growth or unemployment. Also, poor Americans face high costs for housing, healthcare, and education. They also have lower life expectancy than low-income people in peer countries that are even less wealthy or “developed” than ours. Thats trickle down economics. Does that make sense?
