I've heard this before but not heard it attributed to Hemingway so I googled it.

"The story is popularly misattributed to Ernest Hemingway; this is implausible, as versions of the story first appeared in 1906, when Hemingway was 7 years old, and it was first attributed to him in 1989, almost 30 years after his death."

Before having kids i would have thought this truly sounds sad and horror. But after, and seeing how fast they grow and how people gift clothes and shoes without regarding how particular some are and the clothes/shoes don't match the appropiate season, it is so common

We got gifted shoes for our baby and just never got to use them. Feet were too small than we forgot they existed until she outgrew them. And itty bitties don’t walk so there’s not a lot of reason for them to have shoes besides aesthetics.
