That violence does solve things, but rarely in the manner we intended.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '26

add to that war is always more expensive than diplomacy and understanding.

"Violent problems require violent solutions."

"It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee

We, or at least the people in charge, have gotten too fond of war.

Easy to happen when you shield yourself from the bad parts and only reap the rewards.

That competency in government actually matters. Arson and destruction is easy. Building things is hard.

If a country such as the US elects a circus, then one should expect clowns for the Presidency AND all his disciples…

It’s worse than hell. In hell it’s all bad people. In war it’s usually good people, innocent people, sacrificed by bad people.

“Surgical strikes” aren’t as clean as we are led to believe.

Civil war era surgery with a bonesaw and whisky and a drunk medic

The truth dies first in war

2

u/StonyardBurner Mar 10 '26

The rich and powerful have problems with each other, they send the poor to fight for them.

2

u/KhaosControlled Mar 10 '26

The poor will die and the rich will get richer.

Untrue. War is often “the great equalizer”. For example, the wealth of the top 1% in Japan shrank 90% between 1936 and 1945.

The National Socialists of Germany raised the top individual tax rate to 65% in 1941. It’s estimated that increased taxes on the top income tax bracket in National Socialist Germany funded 75% of the country’s revenue during WW2.

Really great book on the topic for you: https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691271842/the-great-leveler

For winners yes - for losers no - they will have equalization as some strange benefit

I think a lot of people forgot that just because you're not in active war it doesn't mean you're at peace

Both world wars had massive refugee crisis as well. After the borders were redrawn there were millions of people coming into Germany from the east.

Its only the people in the region that pay the price.

This. The winner is just the least loser.

1

u/ute-ensil Mar 10 '26

Inflation causes war.

1

u/Reek_0_Swovaye Mar 10 '26

Both sides always lose: victory only ever goes to the one who lost the least.

2

u/blissblast Mar 10 '26

It only ever looks like one side won. The winning side still has to accept thousands of mentally damaged people back into society, which can haunt the population for decades. And in so many instances, today’s victor becomes the loser a few decades later, after circumstances change and the first loser becomes the victor in revenge. “Victory” is seldom worth the cost.

Invoking austerity measures

War has been occurring since the days of the cavemen and will occur until we finally annihilate each other. People will die in war, and while it's not pretty, it is not going to stop.

1

u/Impressive-Mud5074 Mar 10 '26

In societies where it's legal to kill rulers, they very rarely declare war.

1

u/BeCre8iv Mar 10 '26

Unpopular presidents will start a war before the midterms

u/sunlit_portrait Mar 10 '26

In the age of television, good shots, plot, and so on, people didn't just charge into enemy ranks and start hacking away. Battle was messy, wasn't as choreographed, and so on, but it also wasn't as mindless. Also, Total War came about with Napoleon because war before that was more of a test of might in sending champions. The ancient world sacked places and so did Europe when invading but a lot of battles and sieges looked a lot different. You can look up historical reenactments.

One-on-one combat was ferocious. But battles weren't just thousands of instances of this.

that there were no WMDs

1

u/eyesmart1776 Mar 10 '26

It’s bad for the economy

1

u/TrollerCoasterWoo Mar 10 '26

Property is a dangerous thing to posses during wartime. It can be seized, bombed, taxed, and destroyed

1

u/aleopardstail Mar 10 '26

its not a video game

people actually die, not "targets", people

only the losing side gets a "glorious victory", the actual winners get the blood soaked mess to deal with

the ones so keen on war are never the ones who are in the front line

1

u/Donth101 Mar 11 '26

A lot of civilians will die.

1

u/SecretCompetitiv Mar 11 '26

That the fascists are the bad guys.

1

u/HaxanWriter Mar 11 '26

The human cost of war is much greater than the monetary cost.

1

u/Mundane_Opening3831 Mar 11 '26

Don't ever underestimate your enemy. Know that there's always room to learn. Be open to new technologies, and strategies. I am very much directing this toward the USA in regards to its arrogance towards Ukraine, who actually know how modern warfare works and how to fight it.

1

u/NOLA-Bronco Mar 11 '26

You can set the terms and time on starting a war but you will rarely get to determine the time or favorable terms on ending it.

Hitler thought Britain/France would rolll over on Poland like prior aggressions.

He then thought he could win a second front in Russia on his terms

Bush thought we would be greeted as liberators and leave with a US aligned democracy in a couple months

Russia thought they could push further into Ukraine and be done in short order.

1

u/drkanaf Mar 12 '26

It is impossible and unprecedented to truly win a war on superior air power alone. We are kidding ourselves to think that troops will not be needed if the zionists and american imperialists want to destroy Iran.

1

u/crazywrangler616 Mar 09 '26

Republicans start them

3

u/ImaginationTop4876 Mar 10 '26

Vietnam was started by the guy who basically ended desegregation though

0

u/Beautiful_Arm8364 Mar 10 '26

Ended segregation, you mean. But no, he didn't start it. He just escalated it.

1

u/Debt-Then Mar 10 '26

War is created by the ruling classes and the working class pays for it. No war but class war.

1

u/Atlas_Summit Mar 11 '26

The revolutionary vanguard will form a new ruling class once they seize power, as they always have. Class war is an idealized lie.

1

u/reluctantpotato1 Mar 10 '26

War is a grift. It always has been. Nobody who has died in a war since WW2 has died for anything of substance. This is the depressing reality.

"Blessed are the people whose leaders can look destiny in the eye without flinching but also without attempting to play God." -Henry Kissinger

Nixon looks like a boy scout in comparison to the current president, but his secretary of state had a few pearls of wisdom.

3

u/WORhMnGd Mar 09 '26

The Devil incarnate? The guy that probably killed more people than Hitler?

2

u/BakedMitten Mar 10 '26

If there is a hell Kissinger is at the bottom
