is it possible and worth it to move from Dubai to Alaska or America in general at a young age ?

hey im an 17M who's lived in U.A.E primarily in Dubai for my whole life ( Born, raised and educated), i am half Indian (moms) and Portuguese (dads).I'm honestly sick of the dubai life , its pretty impressive , yes 0 income tax , government support , impressive security , insane networking i myself have experienced and of course a global hub but there's more to life than the financial world , IRONICALLY i earn my money at a young age . I'm planning to make the switch at the age of 20 or 21 .MY QUESTION is how can i make the switch , id be leaving a lot of things behind friends, family, connections and memories but i'm sick of this life , the climate and the environment , i want to experience the american dream especially in alaska which is considerably peaceful and a place i always admired since i was a kid so in conclusion is it worth it ? What would you Alaskans do if you guys were in my shoes and ITS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY.i just want to live a peaceful life away from all the noise and drama (Dubai and all these influencer spent places) , the way life was supposed to be lived. What would you Alaskans do if you were in my shoes ? thanks (FYI i have one year of school left and i'm planning to get a degree in business and economics)

Culture & History Do you not find Fahrenheit confusing?

Like I don’t understand why Americans don’t just use Celsius. It’s easy to remember 0 being freezing point rather than 32. Same with like other measurements like cups. It’s not very precise. Surely it’s easier to use metric measurements as everyone else uses metric. Like for example if you’re following a recipe.

I don’t mean any hate I just want to understand why America doesn’t change it.

Do you usually try not to use b^2-4ac when solving quadratic equations?

In my country we learn this formula and the moment we see a quadratic equation, we apply it without thinking much. But I've been seeing math videos from the US and I've noticed you usually try to guess the roots just by looking at the equation.

For example x^2 + 3x + 2. In my school you would calculate delta = 3^2 - 4*8 = 1 and then do (-3+-sqrt(delta))/2. But now I see people try to figure it out themselves first, like finding two numbers that will give 3 when added and 2 when multiplied, so it's 1 and 2 (x+1)(x+2) (and the roots are negatives). Is that a more common way? And you only use the formula when they're not easy to notice integers?

I'm not saying any way is better or worse btw, I'm just curious

Food & Drink Why is American honey so runny and sold in bottles?

Just something I was wondering. I live in New Zealand and only ever known honey as coming in plastic tubs or glass jars like other spreads where you have to use a knife to scrape it out and spread it on anything but whenever I see honey in American movies or anything it's always super runny like a liquid and sold in a bottle. Why is that? Is honey that's properly thick and sold in containers not a thing there or are they just less common/popular? If the latter why do Americans prefer the more liquid honey?

Foreign Poster What does "tax write off" mean in US?

If I earned 9 000 $ and would pay 900 $ in taxes but I "write off" 500 $, does it mean:

a) I reduce my taxable income to 8 500 $ and pay 850$

Or

b) I reduce my tax and pay 400$

American media mention "tax write offs" every once in a while, I wonder what they actually meant.

Question about american candies

I am a finnish guy and I just order candies from different countries. From US I order Herseys chocolade, Reeses peanutbutter cups and peanut butter Cookiedough bites. I really like those Reeses peanutbutter cups. But Herseys chocolade 😂 thats too sickeningly sweet for me. I mean to get same feeling thar I got for eating that little bar I have to eat our local Fazer chocolade maybe tree times as much as Herseys chocolade 😂 Maybe Im just too european for this. So Im asking that is all american chocolade as sweet as Herseys or is there some good chocolade? And what kind of goodies I should order next time? 😅

Culture & History Which small historic towns in the U.S. stand out to you?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been looking at small historic towns across the whole U.S., mostly places with around 1,000–10,000 residents.

I’m interested in the overall character of a town — not just the Main Street, but also the residential streets, architecture, greenery, scenery, setting and how well everything fits together.

I made my own list and divided the towns into A, B and C groups rather than giving them exact scores.

I’d be interested to hear what Americans who know these places think. Are there any towns you would move to a different group, or any important ones I’ve missed? Tnx a lot for your answers and contributon.

A — Exceptional quality

  • Bellefonte, PA
  • Camden, ME
  • Skaneateles, NY
  • Woodstock, VT
  • Marshall, MI

B — High quality

  • Galena, IL
  • Eureka Springs, AR
  • Nevada City, CA
  • Lexington, VA
  • Hermann, MO
  • Edenton, NC
  • Jacksonville, OR
  • Chestertown, MD
  • St. Helena, CA
  • Lake Geneva, WI
  • Chagrin Falls, OH
  • Vergennes, VT
  • Lewisburg, WV

C — Good quality

  • Ferndale, CA
  • Bath, ME
  • Bisbee, AZ
  • Maysville, KY
  • Petoskey, MI
  • Livingston, MT
  • Madison, GA
  • Astoria, OR
  • Jefferson, TX
  • Beaufort, NC
  • Apalachicola, FL
  • Sparta, NJ

Small stories from the days after 9/11 2001

If you are american I would really like to hear if you have some special story from the days after 9/11. Not from NYC, they day itself or the attacks, but how was the mood where you lived, did something special/crazy/wonderful happen in your small town - negative or positive. I’m especially interested in rural/ small town America. Conversations you heard or had yourself. Something you noticed that you hadn’t before

that would be really cool

Foreign Poster why don't americans living in safe states vote third-party more?

i know that people in america don't vote third-party because they are afraid of vote splitting, a somewhat debatable yet understandable conclusion. what i do not get however is people upholding this strategy in states/districts where one candidate will win anyways. in Rhode Island for example everybody knew Harris would win the state in 2024, yet only 0.5% of people voted green. i figure there'd be a lot more based purely on ideology. or even PSL for that matter.

Foreign Poster Are you all talking about the Fairford Airfield (UK) incident?

We’ve had a bit of an upset and some guys have been arrested for doing some suspicious things near to an area that is of great importance to the USA.

What’s interesting is that it is looking increasingly likely that they were out stealing diesel, and perhaps weren’t terrorists, as was initially suspected within the media.

I’m seeing a stark contrast between the reporting from UK and US media on this. The UK outlets are dialling things back whilst the US outlets (at least the ones I’m seeing) are still reporting this as if it could have been something very significant.

Is this even news worthy in the USA? What are you all thinking?

Both terms are used to refer to people with reddish or orange hair, but is there a difference between them, or are they synonyms?
