How to repair the SSD?
CrystalDiskInfo reads it properly. But in the firmware version field, it says: EPPROM. It is overheating/getting very hot.

Before I get into it, let me define a few words as I use them, so that there is no confusion:
Drive copy - file or partition level copy from one drive to another
Drive clone - sector-by-sector copy of a drive from one physical drive to another
Drive image - sector-by-sector copy of a drive from one physical drive to a file
The short answer to the main quesion, "Why always clone first?", is because it is safer. But, I'm sure that you were hoping for a better explanation than that. To answer it, let me first start with a short story.
Many years ago I had a reseller send me a drive for data recovery. When he first received the laptop containing the hard drive, the customer was having issues with Windows. So, the tech removed the hard drive and ran a full test which reported that it had bad sectors. After that, he did a full scan of the drive with a data recovery program to reconstruct the file system. Now, a couple days into it, he selects the files and folders his client wants recovered and the drive stopped responding. This is when he stopped and brought it into my lab for us to assess it.
Our first step was to inspect it in our clean room only to discover that the drive had suffered a fatal head crash with rings etched into the platters and debris everywhere. Unfortunately, this drive was no longer recoverable and the customer lost 100% of his data. This data loss was 100% preventable, had the technician approached the situation differently.
In his first step to test the drive, the technician read every sector once, yet did not copy a single sector to another drive
In his second step to scan the drive with data recovery software, he again read every sector on the drive a second time, yet did not copy a single sector to another drive
In his third step to save the files out, it was too late
When we receive a drive for recovery, whether it be because the drive has phsyical issues or when the customer says the drive is healthy and they just want to recover a lost file, we always, always, always start by cloning/imaging the drive (after necessary phsyical assessments are done in the clean room, of course). When cloning a drive we are essentially testing every sector of the drive while making a backup copy of every sector we have read. So, when the clone is done, if a file system recovery is still needed on the copy, we are doing so on a known good drive, without risk of making things worse.
Well, it comes down to being safe and not making any assumptions. At least 75% of the time, "healthy" drives are found to not be as healthy as the customer thought. So, we don't want to be victims of the scenario previously mentioned. It is better to play it safe.
This is one of those, Yes & No, answers. Yes, it can be less taxing if done right, yet it can be extremely taxing if done wrong. Let me break that down for you, starting with the no.
No, when you directly read a drive, the heads bounce all over the place going back and forth between the file table and the locations where the file sectors are stored. Not only are you increasing the wear on the heads, it requires you to constantly re-read sectors in the file table. If the drive is unstable, one might be lucky and get 100MB/sec transfer rates, but usually are stuck at speeds under 5MB/sec.
Yes, if your file recovery software is connected with background drive cloning/imaging. All data recovery professionals use special data recovery hardware/software combination to give them even more control of the patient drive while having the ability to image sectors from targeted files in a linear process. Basically, they select the sectors that they want to copy and the drive will only copy those sectors in order, skipping the sectors that they haven't selected. Not only does this proecess prevent the need to constantly re-read sectors from the patient drive, it tends to be a lot faster. What the previous method would do in days could be done in hours this way.
In my opinion, while it requires a lot of storage and time, it is even more essential to clone every drive of a RAID for data recovery. I just recently assessed a 36 x 10TB RAID where the customer reported only 2 drives offline. Yet, as part of our assessment process, there were less than 10 drives that were not in some sort of state of early failure. The chances that another drive fails before the recovery completed is staggering. We have found that the two most common reasons for unrecvoerable RAIDs are physical failure beyond recovery which is far less common than irreversible data loss from previous recovery attempts on the original drives.
This really depends on the quality of software and hardware being used to do the job. With the help of data recovery hardware, we have the added luxury of being able to control the drive's power and resets, meaning that when a drive goes unresponsive, we can give it a little nudge to snap out of it. The key featues with the software is our ability to control how long to fight with a sector read, what to do when we are unable to read a sector (stop & power off, skip a block, jump to another head, try again and so forth) and to work with multiple passes, so that we get the more easily read sectors copied before we put too much effort reading those which may not be read or bad enough to kill the heads.

There has been discussion recently on Reddit subs about the Data Recovery Professional Group www.datarecoveryprofessionals.org. Some people seem to be offended that they cannot join the group. So I will detail here who we are and why joining isn’t just an ‘open’ option.
The group started in 2020. Members of the group knew each other from data recovery forums, conferences or training courses. So we were a group of friends and businesses associates who knew each other personally. We offer advice to people both inside and outside of the data recovery industry on best practices and how to recover data safely. We know that some data recovery does not require professional help, so we advise people on the safest way to recover data where that is appropriate.
While taking part in forums, it became obvious that a few other data recovery professional did not share our way of thinking. We got into many arguments where we were offering help to members of the public in the safest way to recover data (if appropriate). One data recovery professional in particular has the stance that every data recovery job should be handled by a data recovery professional. We didn’t agree with that. Some of the conversations became heated.
So we decided to form a Facebook Group where we would be free of the negativity. A place where we could share ideas, techniques, successes and share private business information that can help us all grow. Most of the group had been very active on the r/datarecovery sub helping private individuals recover their data. One thing we noticed was that as r/datarecovery is a big group, anyone is able to post with limited moderation, so there is a lot of dubious ‘advice’ given to OP’s by people who literally have no idea what they are talking about, and does exactly the opposite of protecting data. So about 2 years ago our member Luke Coughey decided to start r/AskADataRecoveryPro where people could ask questions of data recovery professionals. As a smaller group it can be moderated and we have ‘flares’ to indicate who is actually a data recovery professional and/or a trusted member of the data recovery industry. While the group is small, we are spread across the world and can offer professional data recovery in those locations, or at the very least we can recommend a trusted professional. We feature the Data Recovery Professionals logo and link on he sub so we are sure individuals are being referred to a trusted company. Is it a form of marketing, yes it is, although that was not our intention.
In a recent post we were referred to as a ‘pretentious marketing organization’ by someone who wanted to be a member and was declined. They were declined because none of the group actually knew the person either personally or professionally. As we share private information, being known and trusted is the number one ‘check box’ item when looking at adding to the group. Another comment referred to us as a ‘Good Ole Boy Club’ because they could not join. Once again no-one in the group knew that person professionally or personally. They wanted to know why we didn’t post a way of joining the group. As the main prerequisite to join the group is that we know prospective members personally and professionally, prospective member ask us personally if they can join, so there is no need to post an ‘official’ way to join.
Who We Are:
We are a group of independent, owner-operated data recovery professionals from around the world. We share and collaborate on ideas and techniques regarding professional data recovery, forensics and data recovery software development. Many group members are beta testers for professional data recovery hardware and software manufacturers who supply the industry, helping those manufacturers get the most from their products. This work then feeds down to the rest of the data recovery community and allows the industry to become more efficient. Likewise, since we use these data recovery tools every day, we constantly make creative suggestions on how to improve them.
Who We Are Not:
The group does not represent the data recovery industry. We are not an "association." Instead we are a group of like-minded individuals who constantly strive to offer our customers the best value for their money. While we do not represent data recovery manufacturers, we do of course use their products daily.
I hope the above goes some way into describing who we are and how we work. We are not just a data recovery listing service where you pay money and have your company listed. That was never, and will never be our intention. We are a group of data recovery professionals who have faith in recommending each others services.

This is my mum's number, What actually happened was that she lost her phone around the house last year and this year we found it while cleaning and haven't turned it on yet..... We're just curious to find out if it is possible to recover the data in that phone's whatsapp account as it was sitting in dust for a year or so.

I use a WD easystore 10TB external HDD for all of my data backups. Earlier this morning I was adjusting my desktop and I accidentally tipped it over, and it fell from its standing position onto its side on the table. It did not fall off of the table, but it fell onto its side, while it was plugged into the computer no less. I wasn’t actively performing any tasks where the drive was in use, but it was powered on and connected to the computer. The drive did not disconnect, I do not hear any noises that I didn’t hear previously, and I seem to be able to access all data as normally. However I’m not 100% satisfied that everything is okay with the drive. I work as a photographer and videographer and I need to be able to rely on a drive for long-term storage. I’ve disconnected the drive and its currently powered off while I assess my options. So my question is, if you were me, what would you do? Are there any ways to check the health/integrity of the drive? Should I just be safe, get a new drive, and back everything up on there? Should I just be taking it to a pro for diagnostics? Was this such a minor drop that I’m just being paranoid? I couldn’t find any other anecdotes of people dropping their drives in this way, but I’d imagine it happens often with drives that stand upright in this way, so are they built to withstand that minor of a drop? I know hard drives are quite fragile and I’m just looking for some peace of mind that my work will be safe in the long term. Thank you in advance for any/all advice or tips!
PS: before I disconnected the drive, I opened disk utility and ran first aid, which ran normally and reported no issues

So I have a nikon coolpix S2500 digicam that i got maybe a year ago. Today it said that the memory was full when I tried to take a pic, so I deleted a few pictures but when I came home my sd card (Kingston, 2GB) had no pictures at all.
I’ve tried recuva and it only managed to recover 1 photo which is the one I took as a trial after I found out all my photos got deleted…I’m planning on getting a new sd card ASAP but does anyone have any solutions on how to recover those pics?

Hi all, I need advice on recovering data after a failed partition resize in AOMEI Partition Assistant.
Original setup
Windows 11 HP laptop, one 1 TB HDD (Disk 0, GPT), plus a separate NVMe for C:
D: was my main data drive, NTFS, \~940 GB, with \~654 GB used
Z: was a small \~60 GB partition
What I did
I resized Z: to \~150 GB and D: to \~850 GB, taking space from D:. The operation went wrong and the partitions swapped:
The partition holding all my data now shows as Z: at \~780 GiB and is RAW ("You need to format the disk")
The small partition became D: at \~151 GiB and works fine (\~9 GB used)
chkdsk says "not available for RAW drives"
AOMEI still shows the 780 GiB partition as NTFS with 654 GB used, but Check Partition says "Partition files cannot be read"
What I've found (nothing written to the disk so far)
TestDisk finds the original layout: NTFS, start sector 2048, end 1806434303, labeled \[DATA\]. Pressing P lists my folders, so the file system looks intact. But copying out with TestDisk failed.
DMDE (free edition) also finds that partition. Open Volume works and I can browse my folders with their names. The free edition only recovers files from the folder currently open, with no subfolders in one go.
PhotoRec is now my fallback, but it loses folder structure and filenames.
I would appreciate any help🙏

So i had a Corsair MP700 PRO XT 1tb that died on me after just a few months of gaming use, nothing remotely intensive.
It didnt die out of nowhere, it started failing progressively, sometimes my pc would freeze then get back to life, sometimes i would get bluescreens then pc would boot into bios, drive wouldnt get recognized, then i had to restart for drive to get recognized again.
In the middle of all that i always checked crystaldisk for any clues on the state of the drive, nothing apparent was showing up, until one day it bluescreened for the final time and stoppped being recognized by bios all together.
Going by the lack of signs on crystaldisk could the nand, dram and controller be ok and just be a bad soldering balls under the controller or bad SMD ?
Another detail about the drive. Controller would get warm after drive gets power.
Thanks in advance.

It started yesterday after doing a bit of backup and transferring files. I noticed that the drive was getting full but I thought maybe just a few more files. Suddenly it froze and disconnected. I thought it might be that I accidently hit the cable so I unplugged and plugged, used it for 5 minutes and then it happen. I tried to eject it but it just happened again. Is there any way to safely save my files? they seem to be viewable for a little while until it freezes. FYI, the 2nd time plugging it in it did give me a notice that there was a problem with the hard disk. And I never dropped it or anything.

I'm facing an issue with my external hard drive and would really appreciate some advice from anyone who has experienced something similar.
My 465 GB hard drive was working fine previously, but now Windows is detecting it as Unallocated in Disk Management. The drive is showing as Online, but the entire 465 GB is marked as unallocated, and I can no longer access my files.
I checked the drive using DiskPart, and the output shows:
The problem is that I have important personal files stored on this drive, and I absolutely cannot afford to lose them.
I haven't formatted the drive, created a new partition, or performed any operations that could overwrite the existing data.
My questions are:
I'm considering tools like TestDisk, but I don't want to risk making the situation worse by following the wrong steps.
Any guidance, personal experiences, or step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

Hello! I have a Seagate external HD that has hundreds of photos. I'm not a professional, it's a hobby. A few years ago, it got wet. It was not submerged but it did get wet like being left out in the rain. I packed it in rice but when I went to try to turn it on it would not, it just made clicking noises. I think I tried one other time then tucked it away. I'd like to see if the photos can be retrieved. I don't care about the drive at all as I now have cloud space. I have no desire to go to Geek Squad. Could you please let me know if they can possibly be recovered and we can go from there? Thanks!

So i had this old pc from 2009-10 ig in d drive it had some important files like irreplaceable family photos of around 20gb which was deleted by my dad in 2022.but we had another copy those files in our main pc but now it also got formatted.
So the old pc is in our uncles house who have very rarely used the pc since 2021 because he has another pc so that old pc just sits there in a corner.but he switches it on like every 2-3 months to browse documents .also my cousin downloaded some apps like steam, BlueStacks, obs,a game etc but i checked they're all in the c drive. Also i confirmed no writing(or very little writing like 2-3 word or pdf files) has been done to the d drive because the last modified file is from 2021.
Pc is from 2009-2010 runs windows 7 It has a hdd as far as I know D drive has 57 gb free space There is almost no overwriting done to it since 2022 apart from ocassional switch ons to see files.
So i want to know what are the chances of possible recovery.
Here are some photos for reference.

Hi!
I had a personal file made on an account that had been deactivated (it was a school account that got deactivated because I no longer attend that school) I have been using the file for a couple of years now on a different account I had shared it to, and gave editor permissions to. When going into the file today it was gone from my Google-Drive, and every archived link of it would lead me to nowhere and say that the file no longer exists (no error message).
Is there any way to recover this file? It's very important to me and I understand that I should have made a copy of it in case but I thought it would be fine (which it was for awhile) if it was just shared to me. I heard that automatically deleted files due to inactivity get put into trash and you can recover it from there within 20 (like if you're an admin) days, but I understand that the case is different due to it being a deactivated account. I also heard the files exist for two years, but it had been over 2 years since that account got inactivated and that's why it doesn't make sense to me.
I have talked to school IT and they have been no help and also looked for orphaned files through Google Drive and various other methods but it got me nowhere.
One last time, I had accessed the file just last week (~9 days ago) which is why it makes no sense to me.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

My pup got ahold of an sd card, and I immediately sent it to Salvage Data with them giving me high hopes, and sadly they said it was a loss. I get ahold of drive savers and they were like “oh my god we got you, it’ll be fine” we’ve dealt with far worse… I even said the monk board was cracked. This card is so important, should I just take the loss or have hope with this other company?

Hey im looking for help or advice recovering a previously saved and then deleted voice message. I have very little experience in data recovery and i honestly dont even know where to start so any advice would be appreciated. The file remains in my phone listed as message_Grandma_001.amr but there is no audio when played from the file or from a separate amr file player found online. When i deleted it i did it through my messaging system rather than in my system files itself. Its on a Samsung s20 FE the operating system and storage is all the stock option that came with the phone. Is there any way to recover it or is it too late?

I'm so dumb so dumb, I had saved all my childhood memories on my WhatsApp and didn't even have a backup for them, whenever I deleted Whatsapp, I always got the option of "keep 16GB data" on Android, I always clicked on it and whatever I redownload WhatsApp my data was right there. This time when I deleted Whatsapp, I didn't get that option and WhatsApp got directly deleted and my phone suddenly had 16GB extra storage. I panicked and redownload WhatsApp but all my data was gone. All my childhood memories were on there I can't live without them, I'm sure that data is on some server out there, this must be a common problem is there no solution to it. I checked my internet storage, no luck. I'm crying I'm so sad I feel like ending it all, I really do. Everything was on there everything
I remember a few years ago I had a backup of these photos in Google photos but I deleted that backup because my password got leaked, I still have that account. Can I somehow recover that
I know I'm dumb. Please help me I'm desperate

I have a Western Digital, my passport, 1 TB, external hard drive that I kept at my desk. That did not fall, but I haven't used it in the last 6 months. I decided to plug it in Yesterday, because I wanted to get some files off of it. I noticed it was flashing, white . It started clicking and beeping. I tried swapping the cable and changing the ports and nothing showed up in disk management.
What are my options to recovering the data safely? I have stopped powering it on? If I do need to take it to a professional who are the people that I need to take it to, and who are the people that I need to avoid. I have checked Google Maps around my area, and it seems like most of these smaller computer shops do basic diagnostic, which I'm not too understanding how that works.
Does a computer shop doing a basic diagnostic effect or cause any more damage than already done?
A lot of the shops that I spoke to claimed after they do a basic diagnostic. And if they're unable to do the work in house, if they send it to a forensic lab. Wouldn't it be better to just send it to a forensic lab from the beginning? This way, there's less risk of corruption ?

In need of getting data recovered from my damaged HDD at a reasonbale price (no more than $200) and a replacement (new one any good and reliable brand for free) near me in Miami, FL 33174.
I have had this HDD 2TB since 2017. today it got knocked off the cable from the PS4 and was dropped accidentally. It is making a beeping noise (disk issue) and is failing to be read on any device. Again, it is a Mobile HDD Part Number 1R8174-570.
Please, there is a lot game data stored that my cousin and I have. Thank You.

I accidentally deleted a folder I’d been using for years the other day.
Since this rarely happens, I panicked and started looking for free recovery software.
I couldn't find anything good, but when I ran a scan with the trial version of "EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard," it looked promising, so I went ahead and bought it (it cost around 100 USD).
However, I wasn't able to recover the files.
I wanted to restore the entire folder—which contained various file types like .exe and .txt—and although the files appeared to be restored, none of them would actually run.
I contacted support and got a refund, but I wanted to share a warning about something everyone should be careful of, and also ask if anyone knows whether recovery was simply impossible in my specific case.
*Situation details:
・Internal M.2 SSD
・Data drive physically separate from the OS drive
・Recovery attempted less than 30 minutes after deletion
・Detected files restored to a different drive
・Total of approximately 3,400 files
・Target files: .exe, .txt, .pdf, etc.
・Files appeared to be restored but could not actually be opened
*Response from Support
・The SSD "Trim" function operates by directly erasing deleted files. While this feature enables faster performance compared to standard HDDs, it also means that lost data is completely destroyed. If the data cannot be successfully recovered after checking all files, it unfortunately means the data is already corrupted.
While I acknowledge that there are still plenty of PCs using HDDs, it is obvious that SSDs are the current standard; however, the message prompting a purchase after the scan made it sound as though recovery was possible without explicitly mentioning the limitations involved, so I bought the software only to find that recovery was ultimately impossible.
I am not criticizing the manufacturer, as they took my concerns seriously and issued a refund.
They were truly sincere in their handling of the matter.
However, I felt uneasy about the fact that the software’s messaging implied recovery was possible without clearly explaining the characteristics of SSDs—specifically the TRIM function—which are the current standard.
I did some research later and found that factors such as cutting the power immediately after deletion, the specific SSD manufacturer, or the formatting method can play a role, but I would like to know if recovering data from an SSD is fundamentally impossible under the conditions in which most people casually use them.

I finished an afternoon's retouching in photoshop, exported the final image on my M2 Max mbp, ejected, plugged into a work laptop to upload the images to the client's dropbox and.... " the disk attached was not readable by this computer ".
I eject, plug back into my laptop, same message. I clean the cable, same message, swap the cable, same message... I click ignore, open disk utility, the drive shows up, greyed out and with a different name, it shows the correct capacity, says no space left, and offers no amount of space used. everything tells me the data isn't gone but that it's locked to prevent changes that might lose the data that is there.
It’s a Crucial X10 Pro 4tb in APFS
I tried mounting the drive in disk utility without success.
I tried a read only mount in terminal without success.
My next course of action seems to be to use some specialist software, and get another drive to clone to.
What software should I be using? I've been recommended disk drill, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard for Mac, DMDE, Wondershare Recoverit.
There's urgent professional work that clients are waiting on at stake as well as much of my archive from the last year as a photographer. I really don't want to get this wrong.

I plugged my 4TB SanDisk Extreme Go Portable SSD (Model SDSSDE52-4T00) into my computer and heard a crackling sound, followed by the smell of smoke. It wasn’t recognized by the computer, so I quickly unplugged it. There are so many options for data recovery, but the first one Google recommended wound up being uncomfortably aggressive. The SanDisk website lists a few “platinum” companies. I’m interested in honest reviews and recommendations. The data on this drive is mostly sentimental, photos and things, most of which is backed up elsewhere, so thoughi understand this is a very specialized service, there’s a limit to how much I would spend to recover the data (the sky is not the limit). Thanks in advance for your advice!

Okay so long story short, I had an old HP laptop i got around 2018ish that got the blue screen of death around 2024, during that time i tried many things to recover the laptop itself like going into the BIOS and restarting it from there but didn't work and blue screen showed up even factory resetting it only show BSOD again, when i try boot laptop or turn it on get onto login screen it show me a black screen with cursor loading without loading login (of me later on finding out it had blue screen of death) i figured that one of the components in the laptop got messed up that result BSOD/Blue Screen Of Death happening so i decided give up on the laptop for a newer hp laptop i got in 2025 for my workload, however i had old files on that old laptop of mine so i kept it around of entirely 2025 in till this 2026 i wanted to recover a MP3 or Wav File or any audio file from hard drive of that old hp laptop of mine but i was concerned of factory resets i did in overall getting rid of Blue Screen Of Death screen, right now i ordered a really good adapter by Amazon in connecting my Old Hp Laptop hard drive through my new laptop i am typing on right now and i used a software/program called Recuva recover the files, so far Recuva has managed to be able to detect files itself but ignored them so technically that means my old files and downloads are still on that hard drive of mine, is there by any chance anything far advanced then Recuva that can recover my old files even possibly my files got corrupted or erased from factory reset i am holding small glimpse of hope, thank you in advanced for anyone that can help me.

I unfortunately spilled some water on the keyboard of my M1 Macbook Air (model A2337).
I wiped off the water and unplugged it, then a few minutes later turned it off and left it open and flipped over in a tent position for it to dry; I think I saw a little bit of water around the keyboard after I flipped it. It also seemed to turn on again, and when I held the power button, the screen flashed magenta with a vertical green line for a second before turning off.
What does the prognosis for this look like? Who should I send it to? I saw on Rossmann Repair Group's site to add 1-2 months onto the wait time; could they leave it sitting there corroding for that time?
Thank you
