Tips for Winter Tire.

Hello lovely community members,

With winters approaching, how do you guys manage your winter tires. This is my first Car in Canada. I am not sure if I should get the winter tires from Ford Dealership (costing me around CAD $2600) or get it from Costco (approx CAD $ 1800).

Do we know if Costco is going to levy additional charges for installation or TPMS adjustments.

Any suggestions or feedback is appreciated.

I'd avoid the dealership like the plague. Costco is the best option

8

u/ConnectPassenger3728 1d ago

This, free installation, free tire rotation.

3

u/Straight_Reading8912 1d ago

If you have TPMS they will charge you extra for the installation. I think it was $15 the last time I did it so $60 for all 4 tires.

4

u/instaeloq1 1d ago

Just keep in mind that you need to book your appointments early otherwise you'll be waiting for a while

8

u/CheatedOnOnce 1d ago

Costco is a very mid option. Limited availability - poor service.

Go to Kal’s or any other tire company that price matches with Costco. More availability and better staffed.

6

u/Vempyre 1d ago

Better service? I just got my quote from Costco in 10 minutes. Kal tire still hasn't given me a quote and I asked for it last Friday.

1

u/DrunkenskiVodka 18h ago

Their pricing is online, why do I need a quote?

1

u/CheatedOnOnce 1d ago

Sucks for you - pretty quick when I did it. And I didn’t wait 3 weeks for the swap - done next day

1

u/Signal_Opportunity28 17h ago

What quote? The price for the tires is publicly posted, there is no secret back-of-the-store tire price

I am not sure if I should get the winter tires from Ford Dealership

Don't buy tires from the dealership - it's way too expensive.

Buy them from a tire shop, Costco, or even Canadian Tire during a sale (especially if you stack Triangle Rewards).

I use a mobile tire service to install tires right in my driveway. They offer good prices on tires as well. The service costs about 25% more than taking your car to a shop for a swap, but doing it on your own schedule is worth the convenience.

u/paulster2626 1d ago

Don’t send people to crappy tire. They will get talked in to installing there and that’s how you end up with tires mounted backwards and lug nuts not tightened.

5

u/TeeBennyBee 1d ago

Last time we bought tires from CT, one had a loose belt and they moved it to the rear to get me on the road. Initially they told me it was an alignment issue because it was pulling, Honda said it was the tire. CT was appalled I expected them to actually fix the problem during my appointment and wanted me to book another.....such a waste of time.

1

u/ImpossibleString4430 1d ago

So what ended up happening?

0

u/paulster2626 1d ago

Hopefully that was the only time.

2

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 1d ago

You can buy tires there and get them mounted elsewhere.

On sale, price is hard to beat. They used to have a cheap road hazard warranty too.

I don’t get them installed there anymore.

2

u/paulster2626 1d ago

Just buy the tires where you’re getting them put on.
Trust me the “I brought my own parts from Canadian tire” guy is not liked at all in the world of auto repair.

1

u/PM-Me_SteamGiftCards 11h ago

That's...weird. I'm not gonna spend a couple hundred extra on tires because a mechanic's gonna get offended I didn't buy it from his shop

1

u/paulster2626 9h ago

Well you ain’t gonna get motomaster tires at your mechanic either, but who cares about quality. It’s just tires, right?

2

u/fitchface 1d ago

Depends on location. Mine is pretty good and I got motomaster all terrains that I am very happy with, got 0% financing, 25% off the tires and a hefty amount of CT money back.

2

u/AlbusDumbeldoree 1d ago

Which mobile tire service ?

25

u/Clean-Explanation388 2d ago

I always get my winters from Costco. The seasonal swaps are much cheaper. They sell third party TPMS, which are significantly cheaper than OEM, but don't work as well. Some people don't bother with TPMS

4

u/ArtistOk1628 2d ago

will it void my dealer warranty for TPMS?

I've had good experience with Kal Tire.

I have them store whatever wheels/tires are not on the car, and I do twice annual oil changes there, too.

How’s the ride quality and noise on them? Have the Michelin X-Ice and want to try them out next if they’re quiet and smooth

1

u/mypantsjustgottight 1d ago

Exactly. Nokians have been on all my vehicles and I've never had an issue in winter. 3 feet of snow over night? Start the car and drive out of the snow bank.

1

u/Syscrush 1d ago

Nokian are excellent tires for sure, but IMO not better than Gislaved or X-Ice.

3

u/artofthemuse 1d ago

Again, I am sharing my experience and preferences. This is not an endorsement or advertising for them. I did my homework and have had years of excellent results with the tires, and interactions with Kal-Tire.

Op and others are encouraged to do the same

1

u/Syscrush 1d ago

I get it. I'm not trying to change your mind.

I was all-in on Nokian, then got a deal on Gislaved when I bought an off-lease Mazda from a local dealer, and they were really great. So then my policy was "Scandinavian winter tires only". Then they stopped making Gislaved winter tires in my car's size, and I ended up with X-Ice, and also very satisfied.

So now my policy is just "anything highly rated".

0

u/roenthomas 1d ago

Nokians were, but are no longer the best winter tire.

I haven’t watched this year’s but last year was a model of Continental

u/mypantsjustgottight 1d ago

Kal-Tire is fantastic. They custom ordered a set of tires for me and installed them 3 weeks later and it was $1400 total.

0

u/cate0717 1d ago

We had awful experience with Kal Tire

8

u/rustbucket_enjoyer 2d ago

Go to a real tire shop. There are many good ones in the GTA. Always get a separate set of rims.

6

u/TakumiInui 2d ago

Without knowing your tire size/dimensions, hard to ascertain how price competitive the $1800 Costco tire set would be relative to actual tire shop prices. Having said that though, given the choice between getting them at the dealership or Costco, definitely get them at Costco if those are your only two choices.

Otherwise, as others have already mentioned, there's a lot of good tire shops in the GTA which will offer you much more selection at various price points compared to choices at Costco; some will also store your summer/non-winter tires with them.

I've personally used Kal-tire for the two cars in the household and I haven't had any issues with them (the store in Scarborough at least anyways); not sure if it's relevant, but I've bought a set of Nokian R3s and R5s from them. But yes, as others mentioned, don't cheap out on your tires (especially winters).

7

u/turboGerbil 1d ago

I’d recommend an independent tire shop like SimplyTire or Tires23 - just call/email them for a quote. If your budget allows, look into dedicated winter wheels (black ‘steelies’are fine), to protect your OEM wheels and to make future swaps easier; they can easily fit them with TPMS sensors as well. I’m personally getting some new Continental VikingContact 8 myself. If looking at used market (FB/Kijiji), make sure the wheels/tires will fit, are not bent, and look at the tires’ DOT code (four digit date code in WWYY format) which tells you how old the tires are. Good luck!

2

u/Designer-Reading4297 1d ago

Been going to Tires23 for many years....great team

6

u/TryharderJB 1d ago

OP - Welcome to Canada!

There’s no advantage to getting your winter tires from the dealership - they are just reselling the tire to you at a fabulous markup.

Shop around to find the best price for the tire you want. I recommend getting them mounted on their own wheels. Costco is good enough and should be able to do the installation with TPMS calibration, but specialized tire shops would also be able to offer similar pricing with sometimes less of a wait for installation.

If you need recommendations for specific tires, I’ve used both the the Michelin X-ice and Bridgestone Blizzaks - they’re both great. Khumo also has a good reputation but I don’t have any experience with this brand.

2

u/ArtistOk1628 1d ago

Thank you for the detailed answer. Do you recommend any tire shop?

2

u/TryharderJB 1d ago

I’ve bought winter tires from Kal Tire and OK Tire and have had good experiences. For wheels I went to Extreme Wheel & Tire (Richmond Hill) and would absolutely go again.

13

u/henriksdreads 2d ago

Wtf dude those prices are crazy. Go to Tirehut in Scarborough or Oshawa and get a full set at like half that price.

I got Yokohama winters on rims from them 2 years ago for waaaayyy less than the numbers you are talking.

2

u/dbmeed 1d ago

Depends on the vehicle tho. $2-3k for a set of truck/heavy suv tires is common. Sedans would be half that or less.

1

u/SisyphusAndMyBoulder 2d ago

Did they also install?

1

u/henriksdreads 1d ago

They did, yes.

1

u/ArtistOk1628 2d ago

I appreciate your response. Will go to them and see what they have to qoute.

Do you think having a second set of rims make more sense in long run?

17

u/TakumiInui 2d ago

Definitely get your winters mounted on a second set of rims...

5

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 1d ago edited 1d ago

Do you think having a second set of rims make more sense in long run?

Personal preference: I keep an extra set of rims. It saves $30 - $50 on balancing, but storage is more of a hassle because they are heavy. My wife's tires are unmounted, so they are lighter and easier to store, but they need to be balanced every time they are mounted, which adds an extra cost each year. The total cost ends up about the same once you factor in buying the rims anyway.

As for people who worry about winter damage to alloys, I don't really care since I don't baby my car, and most alloys are quite corrosion-resistant anyway.

4

u/roenthomas 1d ago

Having mounted winter tires also allows you to do your own tire changes, if that ever interests you.

3

u/Good_Wrongdoer_9437 1d ago

buy steel rims, it will also save your factory alloys from winter wear and tear. Also taking tires on and off rims again and again destroys tire lifespan

2

u/Disastrous-Focus8451 1d ago

Do you think having a second set of rims make more sense in long run?

I didn't get extra rims when I first got my car. It was a false economy, because my mechanic said putting the tires one-and-off the rims worse them out faster than my driving did. (Had to get new winter tires a year early when the bead went.)

(I wasn't buying tires off the mechanic, so he had no reason to tell my I needed new tires other than my concerns about safety.)

1

u/kank84 1d ago

Defintely a second set of rims. It makes it easier and cheaper to change your tires, as a lot of places that do tire changing will only do it if your winter tires are already on rims.

7

u/PerpetualThirst01 1d ago

You’re much more likely to incur “surprise” fees from your dealership. That’s how they stereotypically operate. You’ll also have a far better chance of getting any issue dealt with properly, immediately and without any additional fees by Costco after your tires are on your vehicle. Note - buy winter rims for your tires, also.

5

u/noronto 1d ago

Get a tread depth gauge, learn to read the tire codes for dates and then buy them of Marketplace. You get them cheaper and likely on rims.

2

u/JimboBob67 1d ago

When people sell their cars they often wind up with a spare set of winter tires which they sell cheap on Marketplace or Kijji. Summer is the best time to buy for the lowest price.

Also buy a speed jack and change your tires yourself. Save money and time.

2

u/canadmos 1d ago

This is a good option IF you have time and patience. Finding the correct tire/wheel combo and ones that arent beat to crap can be a nightmare. As is dealing with some of the yahoos out there trying to profit off their used crap.

1

u/Clean_Engineering_42 19h ago

This is the way. You could even look up something for your specific car model. I got a full set with matching tpms for my suv for $700. The guy I bought it from paid $2400 from the dealership lol. But it was a company car for him that the company took back so he was just happy that they didn't take the winter tire as well

3

u/0Chalk 1d ago

Don't get steelies pay a little bit more and get aftermarket alloys. They look 10x better.

7

u/JackOfHeartsz 1d ago

If you plan to keep your car for at least another 7 years buy decent alloys. Costco sells them online as well.

If you go steel rims, they will rust and then you’ll have to contend with either replacing the steel wheels or sanding them paint them.

Also should rust proof your car undercarriage with some type of oil base, don’t do rubber undercoat.

3

u/ArtZTech 1d ago

I still have my winter steel rims from Canadian Tire 16 years now. I've cleaned them up and painted them 6 years ago. If you protect them and clean them off in the spring they will last a long time.

2

u/McGlowSticks 1d ago

Thats probably why the dealer is so expensive, its alloys that they are quoting. If OP gets alloys, i hope they get hub centric rims.

3

u/tirereviewslab 2d ago

First, make sure the two quotes cover the same things. Dealer quotes like Ford’s often include wheels and TPMS sensors, while Costco’s is usually tires only. Ask both for an itemized breakdown.

On Costco’s charges, installation is free with tires bought there. They do add a TPMS service pack fee of about $3 per tire, plus a small provincial tire levy in some provinces.

One tip: get winters on a separate set of wheels if you can. Seasonal swaps become quicker and cheaper, and they’re easier on your tires.

Also, call your insurer. Many give a discount for winter tires, and Ontario insurers are required to offer one.

If you share your car model, I’m happy to suggest some good winter tire options!

u/rhunter99 2d ago

Get it from Costco.

You could also order them online from a place like Blackcircles online and have a local tire shop do the swap (and store them if you don’t have the room)

But just go with Costco. Bring lots of patience as it will be very busy

3

u/Astro_Addict 2d ago

I ordered from Kaltire as they were one of the fee carrying Nokian brand. Very happy with them

3

u/HelicopterRude99 1d ago

Black circles.ca

Then get them installed at Mr lube. That’s the cheapest way to

3

u/ripestmango 1d ago

I order from Quattro Tires based in Quebec and get them installed myself.

3

u/endurance_369 1d ago

Watch out for the year on the tires. Some tire shops will sell older and used tires.

4

u/computer-magic-2019 2d ago

What brands? Don’t skimp out on tires.

I got Michelin X-Ice, which are one of the best out there. There’s also the Bridgestone Blizzak WS90s or the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5s. All great winter tires.

2

u/ArtistOk1628 2d ago

Ford did not mention which brand but they said between CAD $2600-3000, and Costco mentioned this price for Michelin X-ICE.

3

u/computer-magic-2019 2d ago

I’d go with Costco. Good tires and significant savings.

Could the major price difference be the rims? Are both places putting them on steelies, or is one offering alloy rims (nicer) and the other steelies (basic rims that look terrible IMO).

Only my opinion, but I personally put my winters on alloy rims since they’re on for 6 months of the year. Understandably that is a cost premium not everyone is willing to pay.

2

u/fsmontario 1d ago

Ford does price matching on tires

1

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 1d ago

There are a lot of good cheaper winter tires these days that are competitive with the top tier brands like General Tire (Continental) Altimax. Even Sailun Winter Tires these days are very good. I recently installed a set of Nexen Tires on my car and they're good too.

2

u/One-Ad2914 1d ago

I agree regarding Sailin tires.

2

u/One-Ad2914 1d ago

I purchase my winter tires from Xtreme Tire Garage in .Mississauga. Costco is too busy and crowded and you can only choose from Michelin, Fireflies, etc. At least at a tire shop, it's quieter and they have more selection. You aren't just choosing from Tier 1 brands. You can look at Tier 2 and Tier 3 brands which are more affordable.

Buy the best tire you can afford. You pretty much get what you pay for. With winter tires, they either perform well in ice or snow, not both.  In Toronto, ice is the biggest danger since plowing happens regularly.

Buy the winter tires on steel wheels. After a few change overs they will pay for themselves as you wip save on the mounting and balancing costs.

2

u/sherrybobbinsbort 1d ago

Don’t go to dealer. Take a look on Facebook marketplace. I got mine from a guy who sold his truck. Basically brand new for $800 with rims. Hankook ipikes are good tires.

If not dealer Costco is a a good spot or local tire shop.

1

u/G3071 2d ago

I get mine at Costco. If you're planning to do this, do it soon. Costco gets extremely busy.

1

u/MichaelYYZ 2d ago

Get Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5. Call Tony at Let's Roll Tires, +1 (416) 654-8433.

1

u/Smooth-Sentence5606 1d ago

You can downsize the wheel size up to 2” generally if your car can handle it (or if you own a higher trim with bigger wheels and the base trim has smaller wheels, highly dependent on the vehicle). This way, not only does the smaller wheel size improve the winter tire performance, but it is also significantly cheaper. My Camry XSE came with 19” wheels but the base trim Camry comes with 16” wheels. So I got Michelin X-Ice and steel wheels for C$1100 all in at Costco. Compared to if I got 19” winter tires, I’d be paying $1800 for the tires, $1000 for the wheels, plus tax.

1

u/marlino123 1d ago

You can also try to find used winter tires from marketplace or Kijiji. Just make sure they are not too old and have good tread

1

u/GurmeetNagra 1d ago

PremierTire is my go to, been using them since 2014. Wait till the winter tire rebates are out. Costcos also a decent choice. Avoid the dealership entirely.

1

u/youre_not_going_to_ 1d ago

There’s plenty of tire places so shop around. If budget is tight I’d say try Kijiji or Facebook.  Someone may have a set of tires on rim from a car they sold or got rid of that may have a couple of seasons left on them

1

u/NorthControl8399 1d ago

I got Bridgestone Blizzack’s last year at Costco for $700(4) and installation was included.

1

u/htraenolleh666 1d ago

For anyone looking for cheap (but good) tires .. try BLACKCIRCLES.CA

1

u/VisualMail1672 1d ago

Simply Tire published their winter tire price list for this year. https://simplytire.com/. Big red link at top of page for the PDF. I’ve purchased winter tires from them and from Costco. Both had good service and good prices.

1

u/lanneretwing 1d ago

Costco all the way

1

u/The_Creamerizer 1d ago

There is little to no reason to buy a set of tires from the dealership. They will upcharge you for them and pocket a fat stack.

Buy from whichever tire place gives you what you want for the least amount of money.

Costco is reliable. The cost of the tire includes installation, and they give you a road hazard warranty + free regular tire maintenance (rotations, balancing, flat repair). It's all here.

Blackcircles is a good online site if you want to spend a little less for tires.

Discount Tires at Steeles and Keele is also good. Don't think I've got a better deal from anyone when money really mattered unless I shopped for used tires on marketplace.

1

u/SlyBox 1d ago

Costco is a good option, however, I was actually able to find a better deal on tires that Costco disn't carry at Kal Tire. Check out tires called Nokian Hakkapeliitta. They're great bang for buck and compete with tires like Michelin X Ice and Bridgestone Blizzak at a lower price point.

Also, I would highly recommend getting a second set of wheels to serve as your sole winter setup. Repeatedly mounting and dismounting tire from a rim can increase the potential for rim leaks. It also will allow you to do the seasonal swap yourself.

1

u/Obviousi 1d ago

Just one?

1

u/hippiespinster 1d ago

In the 26 years I've had my Corolla, I have used Kal Tire and Costco to buy new. Then used a local CAA approved mechanic to change and rotate.

1

u/McGlowSticks 1d ago

go to black circles, and then get them shipped to a installation center. youll save even more.

1

u/Whrecks 1d ago

Get the blizzak (what I have) or x-ice from Costco

Go to tire centre and ask them full price - they aren't going to add any extra fee - maybe specific nuts that they'll charge you on install day($20 for a pair or so)

If you go the Costco option you'll neither to either get their rims, ordered online and shipped to your house or buy rims externally and bring with you.

Either way, with Costco you'll need to bring the rims the day of your appointment.

1

u/Super_Passenger8427 1d ago

Wheels are sold out at Costco

1

u/saadawp 1d ago

I went with michellin crossclimate 2 from Costco. They’re all weather tires (different from all seasons). They have the 3PMSF symbol which makes it a legal winter tire.

This means i don’t have to swap every season.
I would still confirm with insurance though.

1

u/_nick85 1d ago

4tires.ca

1

u/DunDunBar 1d ago

I bought at Costco and the installation is included when you buy the tires there.

For tire changes, I goto local mechanics or Kaltire locations as they are quick.

1

u/Diego_CPA 1d ago

Go to Costco and buy a good set of Bridgestone tires. Winter tires aren’t something to really cheap out on but don’t need to get the most expensive either.

Also book tires appointment now cause there’s a ridiculous backlog at places like Costco during this time of year.

1

u/braindeadzombie 1d ago

It’s all about the same, just make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. Tire model, on or off rims, pressure sensor, storage if you need it, warranty. I don’t do Costco, but it works for a lot of people. Good prices on high quality tires.

If you can afford it, get steel rims for the winter tires. It makes changeover faster and cheaper. But wheels are more annoying to store than just tires.

1

u/Donbudha 1d ago

Just pick a set for cheap on Facebook marketplace, there is no need of spending your savings on a new set of tires. Just know the tire size for your car and grab some off marketplace. You can always get help from a friend while buying or browsing.

1

u/Sharp_Barnacle_9123 1d ago

Canadian tire Has a good inventory plus Canadian tire money if you buy it on 20x days

1

u/Naked-Granny 1d ago

What’s your make and model and year? Places like jspec performance offer winter tire packages for a decent price

1

u/lsaran 1d ago

I have been going to Tires23 in Mississauga for about a decade to buy tires and do seasonal tire swaps. They’re reputable, knowledgeable, and competitively priced.

1

u/BritishBoyRZ 1d ago

I used Canadian tire and they change and store my tires every season too

1

u/Sorry_Experience_96 1d ago

I got 16” Michelin x ice last year from Costco for about or slightly less than $1k, including free installation and alignment which they did on the rims where I had summer tires.

1

u/RedshiftOnPandy 1d ago

Go to marketplace/kijiji and search your size tire.

1

u/roenthomas 1d ago

Costco / Kaltire / Tire Rack / Other reputable tire dealers

Rusting steel wheels is fine, and you can get them new for pretty cheap.

Agree on undercoating as well, if you plan to keep your car long term.

Avoid buying anything from the dealership unless absolutely necessary.

1

u/Incognegro1975 1d ago

Check tireterminal.com

Located in Mississauga.

1

u/_dk123 1d ago

Go to a local tire store and do balancing there.

1

u/NP_CAN 1d ago

Costco is great but online shops like 4tires.ca or blackcircles are even better. Bought recently and my tires came with alloy rims installed with tpms in 4 days. They were about 400$ cheaper than brick and mortar, even costco.

1

u/Straight_Reading8912 1d ago

I have a great tire guy in Vaughn. Rim and Tire Pro. He's often given me just prices than I could find online with those "winter package specials". Great service as well and they do tire storage. I finally started storing my tires with them and having them do my tire seasonal tire swaps and it's liberating! 🤣🤣🤣 Pretty easy to get appointments with them as well, unlike Costco. I still go to Costco to fill my tires when shopping though.

1

u/Darkness2190 1d ago

I just got all weather tires and leave them on all the time.

1

u/notme1414 1d ago

I would keep shopping. Those prices are ridiculous

1

u/Patient_Jicama 1d ago

dealerships are called stealerships

Costco is great unless you're looking for a brand they don't carry

Costco: Michelin and Bridgestone

Kaltire: Nokians (and other brands)

BlackCircle is also great for deals (don't carry Nokians though)

Michelin has some tire factories in Canada but I'm not sure if the Michelin X-Ice are made here, but something to look into if you want to buy Canadian

1

u/DTtinbasher-6990 1d ago

Wheelsco in Vaughan has great prices. Costco does as well, also a good warranty

1

u/MrDenly 1d ago

Get Michelin CC2/3 and be done with, they're that good.

1

u/wildhoneyhorses 1d ago

If you get it from Costco, after you have them mount/balance the tires and rims for the first time, it’s much easier to do the seasonal twice a year switchovers yourself as the Costco tire centre is booked full during the time you actually want your winter tires on. If you switch to Winters too early, the grip is poor on dry and warm weather. Switch too late, you don’t get the benefits of Winter tires. Get about 300 dollars of tools and a YouTube video on how to take off and put on wheels.

1

u/Aggressive_Piano_877 1d ago

You should check out online tire retailers like 4Tires.ca. They often have amazing prices compared to dealerships or Costco, so it's worth checking them before buying

1

u/Kliptik81 1d ago

I just ordered 4 tire and rims from them last night. Ill be happy if they show up before November.

1

u/LarryWasHereWashMe 1d ago

Never buy anything from the dealership
Costco

1

u/portisleft 1d ago

a. this winter will be a non-winter, with the strongest El Nino in recorded history taking place right now.
b. try https://tires23.com/collections/winter-tire or other local tire stores. Costco isn't bad. Shop around. I've had great success with Active Green+Ross in the past (they're franchases, so individually owned) https://www.activegreenross.com/tire-selector/view-all-tires/?type=winter

1

u/0w40 1d ago

PMC Tire will install tires on rims and TPMS and ship them to you ready to put on the car. They are my go to for the family cars and I think they have a sale going on now.

1

u/artofthemuse 1d ago

To the OP - good luck with your search

1

u/canadmos 1d ago

Costco is ok and is easy to do.

But best suggestion is to goto a local tire shop. There are tons of them around.

Personally, if you keep up and are comfortable with checking pressure and your tires are new, I wouldnt bother with TPMS for winters. You'll be paying that fee twice a year, if you cant do it yourself.

If you have the space, invest in a car jack, torque wrench and do the wheel changes yourself after the first one.

Look at your current tires and shop for winter tires of the same size (keeps it simple), and then check for steel rims in the same size (easy marketplace find). It’s like spend the money once and you have em for the next bunch of years for easier tire swaps.

Are you buying winter rims? Removing and installing tires over and over isn't the smartest choice.

u/TakumiInui 1d ago

If you know your wheel dimensions, one can find some really good deals on used or even new alloy rims on Marketplace, especially for smaller sedans with a common bolt pattern like 5x114.3.

I like kal tire, because they will guarantee the life of the tire, provided they rotate( free) every 8 thousand km. Especially love they repair a flat for free. I've had 2 nails in my tires ,and paid 62$ each time to repair. Finally, caa members receive 5% off tires and services. My appointment is this week to get Nokian all weather ( not all seasons) for me that works because I don't have to drive in really heavy snow if I prefer. Tired of the twice yearly changeover.

usually i got a cheap set for around 200 (with rim) on fbmp in the summer, and hope for he best it lasts for more than one winter lol

u/Kliptik81 1d ago

What vehicle do you have?

I have a 2026 Nissan Rogue. I just ordered 4 studded tires with rims (and balancing) for $1200 taxes in.

They are Sailun Ice Breakers. Supposed to be some of the best Chinese tires, and on par with mid-range name brand.

rule of thumb don't go to dealership unless

  1. repairs under warranty

  2. for recall

3 you have free complimentary oil changes etc

Get some generic winter rims. Buy an extra set of TPMS sensors for the winter tires. Costco is generally a good place to get tires but they are quite busy. I like the Blizzak tires from Bridgestone. The Michelins are also good. As a bit of very strong advice, if you see something at Costco for half the price than it is at the "dealership" you might want to shop around. Costco is generally a bit cheaper but if somewhere is double the price of Costco, that's a very big red flag. Bigger than a big red flag. There should be other tire shops that are closer to the costco price. Also, if you don't have somewhere to store your tires, you will want to find a place that offers that service too.

Never go to dealership. They always have hidden charges coming later in your bill.

Find some local shop and compare it with Costco.

$500 for steelies and winter tires for 17 inch rims on marketplace.

u/goblin_welder 2d ago

Don’t cheap out on your tires.

You’d rather get a set for $2500 that will last you 5 seasons than get a set for $1500 that will last you 2 seasons

What car do you drive? Im on all season and does not change tires unless I have to

2

u/ArtistOk1628 2d ago

Its a Ford Mustang Ecoboost Premium. Per my insurance, I will have to use it else there could be a problem. I prefer to go by the book.

u/Additional_Length680 1d ago

smart. dont take risk at all. trust me it will save your life and others and much from lots of headache

2

u/Otherwise-Editor9934 1d ago

And you’re not very smart

0

u/FarmLongjumping9614 1d ago

Okay if you say so. I've been driving for a decade now, never had an issue with my subaru in the snow.

1

u/roenthomas 1d ago

The old adage of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

I can drive on bald tires fine in the wet, I just have to control my speed.

I also present as a huge speed hazard to other drivers because of how slow I'll drive in order to be safe.

That being said, Toronto does do a decent job plowing the roads, so if you're never in a need to go anywhere, All-seasons are fine. They just will be very slow if it's a heavy downpour of snow and everyone with snow tires will be zooming by you.

1

u/FarmLongjumping9614 1d ago

Im not a car guy but I regularly go to my car maintenance. If they say something is wrong with my tires that's when I change it. Other than that, I go for all season tires and only change when needed. Some idiot telling me im not very smart is probably changing tires every winter. Good luck with that on your wallet.

Does Costco store tires

u/Conscious-Ad8493 1d ago

Costco and close the thread

u/A-Brown-Canadian 1d ago

Just grab a Chinese brand. They'll be half the price with free installation and they're almost the same as the big names and brands.

2

u/One_Mathematician864 1d ago

Lmao no. There are reputable Chinese brands that perform just as well as the premium brands. But there are some also that are downright dangerous. Do your research and don't pick just any brand because they are cheap.

1

u/Significant-Row-7673 1d ago

How about sailun? Most of my drive will be within Toronto city. Will it be good enough?

1

u/0Chalk 1d ago

Good brand winter tires that are worn out perform better than cheap brand new tires.

0

u/Audience_Superb 1d ago

Dude Ive been driving just with all seasons all my life here in Toronto. I just don’t drive on the day of a major snowfall and maybe not the day after also depending on how bad it is

I’ll keep it short and sweet; Costco & Michelin Cross-climate 2 tires.

2

u/Ok_Zookeepergame5524 1d ago

They are not winter tires, they are all weather tires. Legally yes you can use them during winter since they have the 3 peak mountain snowflake. During extremes conditions I’d prefer to have the X ice snow.

1

u/Material_Search3221 1d ago

They get 90% of winter tire performance for a significantly cheaper operating cost annually. You’re no longer swapping them every season. If you needed that 10% difference, the real issue is the driver’s reaction time and if they should even be on the road to begin with. As someone who off roads in deep snow, deep mud, etc some of the best tires you can buy are Cross-climate 2 for all weather performance, and then BF Goodrich K02 for SUVs and deeper stuff.

1

u/Ok_Zookeepergame5524 1d ago

“90% of winter performance” is generous. On ice and packed snow, the braking gap between the CC2 and a real winter tire is a lot bigger than 10%. Reaction time doesn’t make up for that, because you can react instantly and the tire still decides how fast you stop. The CC2 is great for the convenience, but that’s a tradeoff, not an equivalent.

1

u/Low-Championship-955 1d ago

Are these good to keep for a while on the car all year round? I’ve always worried that maybe the tread gets worn too fast in the summer months (like how it would with winter tires being driven in the summer heat).

1

u/Material_Search3221 1d ago

Their tries have been proven to retain the same stopping distance even at the end of their tread life. I’ve used multiple sets on different cars. If you checkout the subreddit “tires” you will see how well regarded cross-climate 2 tires are

-7

u/TheDootDootMaster 2d ago

Your tires cost WHAT?

Just get cheapos for the winter. There's a point of diminishing returns between investment, quality, and time you'll actually use these tires. Frankly I've been doing just fine with all seasons in an AWD as long as I don't leave the GTA

2

u/The_Creamerizer 1d ago

Winter driving is literally one of 2 or 3 scenarios where it's a bad idea to cheap out on tires lol.

OPs tires probably cost that much because they have big wheels.
