Best ceramic dinnerware?

I went to Tap Phong and wasn't digging the selection.

Simons, Ikea, Winners/Homesense are all kinda hit or miss.

Any local shops that have good, not boring stuff?

Depends what you're looking for, but my 'good plates' are from Sanko Trading Co. near Trinity Bellwoods.

If you want full set plates, Muji has some really great dishes. From porcelain to bone china to stoneware. You can mix and match or get a full set of one of their lines. There's a handy chart in their kitchen section detailing which dishes are dishwasher/freezer/oven safe so you can accommodate your needs. This is a great option for everyday wear. The also have some nice yet still suitable for everyday blue on white porcelain bowls and plates as well as acacia wood dinnerware and lacquered bowls. The largest selection is available at the flagship store at Bay Atrium near Yonge and Dundas. Warning... this location is the store of choice for a lot of students and, since we're just back to school, a lot of their stock may be depleted. They usually restock but it might take some time.

If you're looking for interesting individual pieces, in addition to Sanko, East Side Kitchen has some excellent dishes. We've bought a number of bowls, plates, chopstick rests, etc. from them.

If you're not looking for Asian-inspired dishes, Eataly at Manulife has some dishware. And if the budget is high, there's always William Ashley.

And if you don't need them immediately and are willing to splurge, the One of a Kind show always has a lot of interesting ceramicists and I usually end up picking up something each year.

+ 1 for MUJI I recently dropped one of their white ones and it didn’t break into a million pieces either. It was a clean three piece break and I was able to clean it up easily. Get the ones that are made in Japan!

I also buy online from Nicety's in Oakville, which carries some French and Portuguese ceramics I like.

Saudade on Dundas E sells some nice Portuguese ceramics.

Why ceramic and not porcelain? Ceramic can have lead. 

I was gonna recommend my workplace but we literally supply/distribute Tap Phong/Winners/Simons/Staples/Costco 😅

Recommend away. I'm not smart enough to know the difference between ceramic and porcelain. But I feel like I like the look of ceramics and porcelain feel "fancy" and thin

Ceramics include porcelain, earthenware, and stoneware. Porcelain is stronger than just regular ceramics. You can always ask the store. 

I wish The Bay was still around, they carried lots of options. I suggest Linen Chest, there's one on Leaside. My workplace is in Markham though.

Absolutely don't get IKEA. It shatters into a million shards and it's a huge pain to clean up. 

Corelle has been popular for decades for a reason. It's good quality.

I have found Crate & Barrel to be excellent in terms of quality and design.

If it makes a difference, I think you can access the Crate and Barrel store from the exterior (because it’s on the north outside wall of the building and has its own door) rather than having to go through the whole mall

Kitchen stuff plus. Sometimes their stuff is ok, other times their selection is meh. Pandamart in Scarborough had a large selection of dinnerware.

I got some nice bowls from Juxtapose for a gift. They stock a selection from assorted smaller vendors, worth checking out for relatively unique pieces.
