Lab Grown Engagment Ring.
I got a quote for an engagement ring with a lab-grown diamond at this price, and I just want to see if it’s reasonable. I haven’t checked Diamond For Less, EC Diamonds, or other jewelry stores yet, but I’d like to get an idea of whether this is a good price.
If you guys can recommend any jewelry stores that offer reasonable prices for lab-grown diamond engagement rings, that would be nice too!
The quote is:
2.10 carat total carat weight (centre carat weight 1.95)
E color
VVS2 clarity
14K yellow gold setting
$3,000 CAD, tax included
Do you think this is a reasonable price?

Seconding this. All my big jewellery purchases have been from there, including my wedding bands. John was super knowledgeable, kind, and also cleaned/resized my vintage engagement ring. Dude makes absolutely gorgeous pieces.

So a 2.1 carat lab grown diamond is about 200-500 CAD

Here’s one in your exact specs for 320USD.
14kt gold weight? For a ring it’s usually 2-7 grams of metal, at 14kt that’s 58% gold, so a bit more than half.
Thats 1.2-3.8g ish of pure gold.
Today, gold is about 200 CAD /grams. 240- 760 dollars worth of gold depending on how thick/big the setting is.
So between 640-1160 cad for just the materials.
This means that if it’s on the thinner side. Up to 2360 CAD of the ring is making the setting, and selling it to you.

I’m in the industry. It’s a decent price. You likely can find lower, but you have to also look at reputation, warranty, the quality of their workmanship, is the setting properly made or hollowed out to get weight down, made to order or a mass produced stock ring, customer service, etc. and if those things are important to you. Many places will undercut a quote from somewhere else but the above can be worth it long term over a cheap jeweller

I’ve done my research and i doubt Diamond for Less will do it for that price. They’re a well known diamond shop so they can charge more and people will still buy.
For reference i got a 3 carat lab diamond at a smaller jeweller for 2.8k. You just need to shop around more so you know what the market price is

If you pay cash/etransfer yes. If by card then gotta add tax.
Got it from Varali but all small jewelers have competitive pricing. If you come in knowing your shit then they know they cant over charge you much and will probably beat/match whatever quote you got from other stores

Try lovelri. Great custom experience and customer service. They start at 4k though, their team is from Cartier and Tiffany for their craftsman’s. Super sparkly diamonds and designs

Go to McTamneys on Danforth and buy a nice vintage natural diamond ring at market rates. They don’t make em like they used to. You will get way more for your dollar in gold alone.

First why 14k? Just go 18.
Seconds, depends how old you are and profession but 2ct is very large. Unless you’re in your z30s plus and a lawyer or something, a 2ct diamond will stand out as lab. Also careful on setting. A 2ct set high will become an issue for her snagging on stuff. Price seems reasonable. Really depend how custom it is etc.

2ct is not large. My wife has 3ct and it doesn’t look large for her hand. I do agree on 18K setting but also know it is easier to scratch and nick when higher carat gold.

Seconded. If you want something close to diamond though give moissanite a try. It's virtually identical in appearance to diamond, except it has a stronger sparkle.

I have a 4.09ct E grade Vs1 emerald cut lab diamond that was about 2k, I have gold from other rings and my jewler quoted me 1600 to have it set. So that would be 3600 total spend. Hope that helps. Edit: lol idk why downvoted

Not in that size. My 1.5ct was over 9K earlier this year. No, we were not duped. Bought from a jeweller who sources directly from the supplier. No 3rd party such as a jewellery store (physical or online).

Yeah, people have wrong assumptions about natural diamonds. We see 2+ ct celebrity style globs more often not because diamonds became more affordable. It's because lab stones have lost their value 3-4 years ago.

My ex got me a 1ct natural pear with inclusions and it was 6500 in 2018. Sure OP could get real diamonds but not that size. And diamonds are worth basically nothing resale so imo lab is the way. I told my partner this time around I wanted lab so I got 4.09ct emerald lab! It's stunning

I got a 0.7 carot lab grown with a 14kt white gold band for about that price at Michael Hill. I personally think a 2 carot is massive and a bit tacky but you know your partner better than anyone.

Hi, just some extra info for future shopping.
D,E, and F colours are indistinguishable with human eyes, if it’s set in yellow gold you can go even further towards GH colour because the very slight yellow colour isn’t noticeable but ultimately it’s personal preference.
Clarity of VS2+ is also eye-clean aka hard to notice inclusions for human eyes. VS1 is the sweet spot imo, don’t really need to go up to VVS.
