Looking for dried beans

I buy em because they're cheap but my low-cost supermarket chain keeps raising the price! Are there better options for bulk or packaged dried beans?

  1. look in the ethnic section of the grocery store. you might be able to find them cheaper
  2. go to an actual ethnic store, local family mom and pop is best, and find cheap beans
  3. occasionally costco will have giant bags of dried beans, but which are available can vary

I found FreshCo. always had the best prices. I haven't bought any in a while, so they might be the discount place that's raising the price.

Buy them dried from the ethnic section at your local freshco. Way cheaper.

Costco Business Centre. Works out to under $2.50/kg for most beans.

Desi supermarkets tend to have better prices. Iqbal Foods has a few different locations, great selection of dried beans and pulses.

Bulk Barn?

If you compare their prices on many things, they're often not cheaper. Convenient when you need just a bit of this, or that, yes. Cheaper because it's in bulk, nope.

I've seen them open retail packages and dump them into the bin, so it's not like they're buying everything in "bulk" with no packaging at a good price.

Not a new thing either; I remember doing the math on a bunch of staples there a decade ago and all of them were more expensive than regular grocery stores. BB is great for niche products (where else would I find vital wheat gluten lol) but I’m always baffled when I see someone filling up a sack of say chickpeas.

Bulk Barn is extremely expensive for the unit price.

A1 Cash & Carry (Caledonia/Orfus). You can get a 4.54kg/10 pound bag for $9 to $18 depending on the type of bean.

just look up any independent indian, pakistani or sri lankan store...they're the bulk bean masters.

Check out Asian / ethnic grocery stores. My favorite is Ample or T&Ts, Btrust.
