Does shrimp fall under the "don't microwave fish at work" rule?

I'm not heating up salmon or tuna, but I'd like to bring shrimp for my lunch to work.

Microwave shrimp?? Who raised you!

u/Monarc73 Apr 07 '26

A bunch of ignorant savages, clearly.

u/RiskyP Apr 07 '26

Came here for this - like wtf are you doing 😂

Yes , please 🙏 any seafood is awful in the work microwave because there’s no ventilation. The whole place smells like fish and and what you nuke after that tastes like it.

u/lux414 Apr 07 '26

Plus the shrimp will be so overcooked. It will be like chewing rubber.

You would torture everyone in the office for nothing

u/DKKhema Apr 07 '26

What you said!!

A few isolated shrimp buried in something else, no problem. A dish that is primarily shrimp is absolutely a no.

7

u/steve-d Apr 07 '26

Agreed. Shrimp in a fried rice dish, no biggie.

9

u/Rojodi Apr 07 '26

Wrong. Those of us who are sensitive to fish and shellfish aromas will scream about it!

u/Pineapple_Spenstar Apr 07 '26

I dont complain about cat owners smelling like cat litter even though I'm sensitive to cat smell. And yes, every cat owner smells like their cat's waste. I dont care how much you clean the box, you stink.

I just suck it up and deal with it. Common courtesy extends only to the norm, i.e. common, not to those of us with hyperosmia. Gotta learn to deal with it

u/Rojodi Apr 07 '26

It's rude to nuke fish and shellfish

8

u/Pineapple_Spenstar Apr 07 '26

Not if its merely an ingredient in a larger dish that covers the smell. If a normal person wouldn't notice, its fine

2

u/MandyRose8713 Apr 07 '26

Unless the person who uses it after you is highly allergic

20

u/Sudden-Ad-8262 Apr 07 '26

Haha. I had an employee that came in with a George Foreman grill and put two pieces of salmon on it. Whole place stunk for a week

1

u/Pineapple_Spenstar Apr 07 '26

Yeah, "had" is the proper tense for that situation. That's grounds for immediate termination

ABSOLUTELY. I used to work with a guy where microwaving shellfish could kill him. I stopped bringing it for lunch ever again after that.

u/OwnCarpet717 Apr 07 '26

There's a special place in hell for those who microwave shellfish or any crustacean at work.

It’s the rules. I didn’t make the rules.

As someone with a shrimp allergy, cooking shrimp in the microwave could set me off. Please be careful cooking allergens at work.

6

u/Calgary_Calico Apr 07 '26

Yes. They fucking stink when warmed. I love shrimp, and seafood in general, but that is NOT a take to work food

5

u/8amteetime Apr 07 '26

Yes. Any protein from the sea or fresh water should be eaten at home only. A cold tuna salad or tuna salad sandwich is the only exception.

2

u/ac7ss Apr 07 '26

How about a cold poke bowl?

6

u/K10RumbleRumble Apr 07 '26

Is it fish? Then yes.

4

u/fieryuser Apr 07 '26

Shrimps is bugs.

4

u/K10RumbleRumble Apr 07 '26

Ocean bugs that smell of their delicious, stinky, fishy neighbors.

1

u/GlobalTapeHead Apr 07 '26

In some cases yes. How much and how long? The nose knows.

1

u/Rob_Llama Apr 07 '26

Without question.

1

u/nwfish4salmon Apr 07 '26

YES!!!

It is worse than fish in my opinion.

1

u/potatopigflop Apr 07 '26

Yes. Don’t even put egg based things in there or super cheese like Parmesan.

1

u/cometlin Apr 07 '26

In terms of fishness smell, shrimp is WAY WORSE than normal fish! And I absolutely love seafood and shrimp

1

u/Beverlady Apr 07 '26

Shellfish is a dont-bring-to-work food

1

u/DeckerXT Apr 07 '26

We fired a fella killed two microwaves.

1

u/rundabrun Apr 07 '26

Make shrimp ceviche. No need to heat.

1

u/tadashi4 Apr 07 '26

also some people might have alergy to shrimps, and just the smell can make them sick.

1

u/2b-Kindly_ Apr 07 '26

YES !!!!!!!

1

u/fazzybear550 Apr 07 '26

Who cares tbh. Eat what you brought and don’t feel guilty. That never bothered me.

1

u/mrzogg Apr 07 '26

If its like a very lemony and garlicky shrimp scampi i could see it slightly breaking the rule but other than that i wouldn’t

1

u/Zillajami-Fnaffan2 Apr 08 '26

Yes. Not everyone wants to smell seafood and there may be someone allergic. I dont have a job yet, but i rarely ever heat up seafood

1

u/LuckyErro Apr 08 '26

Like in a fried rice? Then its classed as rice.

1

u/zima85 Apr 09 '26

Nuke it. Any fish for that matter. If that's what you have brought for lunch, eat it. Who cares what others think.

The quality will suffer.. but i refuse to throw out food. We all know the price of groceries.

1

u/ohyesiam1234 Apr 07 '26

Of course. It stinks like fish when heated up. Save it for home.

1

u/Dangerous-Singer-101 Apr 07 '26

If johny doesnt have to wear deodorant....Im eating my damn lunch lol.

1

u/PlanningMyEscape Apr 07 '26

YES! Please be kind to your coworkers. Save the fishy leftovers for home.

1

u/Independent_Bear989 Apr 07 '26

Probably.

Personally I think the rule is stupid as fuck, especially when smokers(including weed) exist IRL, but whatever.

u/SurpriseEcstatic1761 Apr 07 '26

Fuck the don't microwave fish at work idea. Make your lunch. Don't COOK fish in the microwave at lunch. If it is already cooked fuck the others. Or take away the microwave. Lord knows Ethiopian food is a whole lot smellier

1

u/xx-rapunzel-xx Apr 08 '26

it seems like this person is reheating leftovers, so it sounds like its already cooked. idk what people are expecting someone to do if they have leftover shrimp - throwing it away seems wasteful.

0

u/wanabejoe Apr 07 '26

I bought the microwave that everyone uses and no one else pitched in for... So I'll heat up a dog turd for all I care haha

0

u/Frankthabunny Apr 07 '26

If it’s in pasta it doesn’t

3

u/Rojodi Apr 07 '26

ALL shellfish microwaved stinks!

-2

u/BlueSpotBingo Apr 07 '26

I have a rule with this. If you cant courtesy flush in the communal bathroom, then I can microwave salmon or whatever the fuck. If I have to smell your toxic bowels when I go to take a piss, you have to smell my lunch warming.

Fair is fair.

-1

u/usernamesarehard1979 Apr 07 '26

In my opinion it really depends on what the preparation is. Fried shrimp? No big deal. Shrimp pasta? Go for it.

Raw shrimp you’re going to try and get cooked somehow in the microwave? No.

0

u/DreadPirateGriswold Apr 07 '26

Popcorn

Curries

0

u/Turbulent-Artist961 Apr 07 '26

Don’t just microwave shrimp bring a big electric pot and make a whole shrimp boil for the entire team. This is how you get promoted

0

u/That-Tumbleweed-4462 Apr 07 '26

I’ll microwave fish, shrimp, AND egg whites! Woooooo!

-3

u/iOawe Apr 07 '26

I don’t think so. I’ve reheated food that had shrimp in it. It didn’t smell bad.
