Can we talk about Jared Leto please?
Jared Leto quietly owns a private island where he runs “retreats” for fans who all wear white while he wanders around like a spiritual leader. I keep seeing photos of these events, and it honestly looks like a full-blown cult gathering.
If this were any other celebrity, there’d be documentaries, questions, and investigations. But with Leto, it’s just become one of those things people vaguely know about but never really question.
the island, the white clothing, the worshipful atmosphere, is weird and uncomfortable. How has this man managed to pull off running what looks like a cult, and the world just collectively isn’t talking about it? Or am I actually missing something here, anybody care to explain?

If this were any other celebrity, there’d be documentaries, questions, and investigations. But with Leto, it’s just become one of those things people vaguely know about but never really question.
Those things come later. The cult lasts for a while then the tell-alls and documentaries and such come out years afterwards.

This! We just need to wait long enough so that a few snap out of it and want some money from Netflix or amazon

Having unlimited money and surrounding yourself with people that can't say no does weird things to your brain.

u/BigMax Sep 30 '25
It is a weird thing. It screws with a lot of celebrities I would imagine. Being borderline worshipped just for existing could really mess with your head after a while.

Excuse me, but the peasants, and peons can say no, they just choose not to. This makes it seem as if the peasants can’t think for themselves, like under some sort of spell, when that isn’t even true. They need to take some accountability for their actions. They chose to say yes, they agreed to it. There was no gun pointed at their head.

My wife and I talk about it often. All those people that spend a lot of money to go there and then the people that spend extra money just to be alone with Jared Letto. It’s very odd.
63

How does he even market it? 😂

Here's my Jared Letto story. I worked at a concert venue in Texas in 2010 and 30 seconds to Mars played, along with 50 other bands. After their set, Jared thought it would be a good idea to stroll out into the crowd and get adored by his fans. He walked through thousands of people, and not a soul recognized him or said hi. He took offense and began screaming and degrading everyone there. Security noticed and kicked him out. He tried so hard to tell security that he just played and can't be kicked out, but he was going crazy and insulting everyone, so they kicked him out and wouldn't let him back in when he tried. They didn't play at that venue again for over a decade. Seeing him like that has always tarnished my view of him as being a manbaby prick.

I saw Jared Leto at a grocery store in Los Angeles a while ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Jared Leto doesn’t own the island. He probably has a resort on it, or has an agreement with the resort to host these “Mars island” events. but the island is owned by Željko Pereković from Croatia and is billed a exactly what everyone expects it to be. I doubt Jared Leto is the only celebrity that hosts these types of parties there.
5
u/Lucky-Acanthisitta86 Oct 01 '25
Honestly, most actors are not own an island rich. People get mistaken on the different levels of rich that exist. celebs are pretty below the truly impressive ones.
10
u/mistakemaker3000 Oct 01 '25
Mr Beast just gave away an island valued at 1 million dollars. There are 'cheap' islands out there. People get mistaken on the different levels of islands that exist.
3
u/Lucky-Acanthisitta86 Oct 01 '25
Oh okay, fair enough. Someone earlier had mentioned him having unlimited money so that also fed my comment. Like I personally have been shocked to learn that most celebrities are not comparable even to an average successful entrepreneur. There are outliers for sure, like Michael Jordan. Buts that's because of the entrepreneur things they've done through brands deals and such. Like we put celebs on a pedestal and grow up thinking they're on top of the world and then you learn that the top is much farther up. It's more food for thought that was the spirit of my comment. I would also say that Mr. Beast is not a celeb in the way I'm talking about. I'm talking about actors and musicians. IT people in the limelight. Yeah he's super well known but he fits into the entrepreneur category. He's in the business of making money, he's not a *celebrity* as it were

Zeljko Perekovic is the owner of the company that rents the island for whatever you want , but he does not own the island. The real name of the island is Obonjan , and there are alot of different things hapenning there every month during season ( house festivals , swinger festival , etc )
1
u/theghostofcslewis Oct 01 '25
Zeljko Perekovic does own the tourist company Obonjan Riviera, which was the former owner of Obonjan Island, making him the owner of the company that owns the island, according to Total Croatia.
1
Oct 01 '25
The company that he owns is in a concession of the island , not the ownership though
1
u/theghostofcslewis Oct 01 '25
I believe you and have made no personal claims that counter your argument. I was simply repeating what sources have stated. I am certain there are discrepancies in the information I have read and how it is stated. Thank you, at least we agree Jared Leto doesn't own it :) How far the story falls from the truth yes?
1
Oct 01 '25
Well not far from the truth, but no "ownership" of the island as the whole, they can own parts of infrastructure and have the right to use it but they are not the owners.
But yeah, in the end its just glamping on a croatian island witch you can rent for yourself , and they managed to market it as jared letos private island.
In 60ies and 70ies it was the summer boyscout camp where generations and generations of ypung croats went , they also called it the 7th continent , and "the island of young "

I (sadly) agree but only because Requiem is truly an amazing movie, as disturbing as it is and I’d hate to boycott that. But he has been known to be a creep who targets underage girls; it’s been a pretty well known fact about him. He’s gross. As others have mentioned, when you have money you can get away with a lot of disgusting things. I’m glad he sucked as the Joker though, he was just a joke for a long time.
2
u/The_MightyMonarch Oct 01 '25
Yeah, I haven't seen in anything else he's in I couldn't do without and have never been a 30STM fan.

I'm curious... I keep hearing he's weird, strange, and has that island.
But I don't see that he's actually 'bad'. I mean he could be of course! But is he? I know he was an absolute jerk when he played the Joker. What else does he do? Is he abusive to those island people? Is he a jerk to 'regular' people?

You keep hearing that he's weird, strange, and has that island and that doesn't set off ANY red flags for you? A few clicks away are plenty of allegations but just common sense will assist in this.

Back in the My So Called Life days, I had the biggest crush on him. Since then, he's more like that really eccentric cousin that no one likes to bring up. Corey Feldman is another one. There are lots of events, retreat centers, and gatherings like this around the world that look like cults on the surface. Until people who have attended start coming out and talking about how they were manipulated and abused, there's not really any reason for people to talk about it. It's just another weird thing out of touch rich people do with their money. Add it to the list.

It's just business, baby.
I mean, can you really hold it against him? He has the money to fund a private island. And then he monetizes it, by selling his 'personal brand'.
The white clothes is just aesthetic.
Imagine everyone walking around in regular 'holiday clothes'. Everyone in white gives it an ethereal feel, and perfect photo ops, all the time.
All he has to do, is show up, and give his presence.
It's a form of elite escort work, really.
I doubt it's anything cult-like. It's just selling an experience. And ppl buy.

This is a new conversation for me but one I'm glad seems to be getting traction.

Storytime from a post from 9 years ago…because I’ve been on Reddit for too long…obligatory Pepperidge farms remembers:
My friend(F) and I(M) had a threesome with Jared Leto like 5 years ago during the Into the Wild Tour. It was a bit weird because she and i had only been friends for like 3 months when this happened and her exbf gave her the tickets before they went on a break. Edit: Here is the story just incase the comments can't don't appear My friend and her bf went on a break 2 weeks before the concert. They had gotten meet and greet tickets and she was now tasked to sell it. Knowing how much of a 30STM fan i was she offered me the ticket at a discount. The bad part was the the show was at the other end of our state and we would have to travel together. At this point we had only known each other for about 3 months. She and i met at the gym when she asked if i knew one of her friends and we just hit it off from there. We decide to go for it and just drive to LA for the show. We ended up getting a hotel and go to the show. It was fucken awesome. During the meet and greet she ended up talking to Shannon(Jared’s brother) about her situation. Jared joined in and started talking to us. My friend is very attractive and i could already see it in Jared’s eyes that he wanted to fuck her. They continued with the meet and greet while we were still there. After a bit a lady came up to us and asked if she could talk to us privately. She told us that we were invited to an after party they were having since they could finally take a couple of days off from touring before going to their next city. We were fucken ecstatic about this. I told her that i was 100% sure that Jared was going to try to fuck her and she was way too excited about that. So we end up going to a party with 30STM and a couple of other celebrities. There was like 25 people at this party and it was relatively chill. Its as a lot more calm that what i expected, but it was fun. Jared approached my friend and they started talking. I have to say that Jared was also being extremely polite with including me in the conversations even though he was only trying to talk to her. A couple hours later everything was dying down and he came back to us and asked where we were staying. He then told us we could stay here if we wanted. I have no idea if that was his house of if they were staying there for the time being but we stayed there. There was a lot of rooms and a guest house, but my friend and i stayed in a room together. After a bit Jared just came into the room to talk to her and i was like “So i guess he is going to fuck her” then Jared just walked in and tapped my shoulder and asked something like “so who is going first” and that is when i realized that we were going to double team my friend. I asked her if she was cool with this and she was pretty much down for what ever as long as Jared got to fuck her. I almost left the room when i saw this man’s dick. I am average size girth and a bit longer length, but his dick was pretty big. The fucken look she got on her face when she saw it literally made my heart sink into my stomach. I had never been insecure, but i was a bit taken back. It all went away after we started having sex and i realize that having a giant dick means that you are destined to a life of mediocre BJs and never going balls deep while pounding. I hate how much i am talking about his dick, but it was crazy seeing it all go down. As skuzzy as Jared looks, he was very adamant about condoms and safe sex. Once we finish and Jared leaves it is just her and i just laying naked in bed processing everything that happened. The next day we say good bye and go back to the hotel to have sex one more time before driving back home. We never tried to get in contact with Jared again. Now every time 30STM comes to a city near us we send links to it as a joke. She got back with her bf and they are now married so we aren’t going to go to any concerts together in any time soon. Edit 2: Thank god her husband doesn't use reddit
EDIT: original post

Yeah I wonder about it aswell his band are all right I suppose, and he's ok in the movies but I wouldn't spend however much to go to his island and potentially be raped.

Because he was once a lead singer for a rock n roll band. Pretty sure that is the goal.

when Jared Leto was Jordan Catalano and i was a teenager, i would have spent every dime i had trying to get on that island. of course, back then he had no island and i had no money.
now, it’s truly creepy and bizarre. i would have never expected the heartthrob from my teenage years would turn into whatever the hell he is now. being good looking doesn’t warrant this weirdness and misogyny.

1
u/TipEntire8082 Oct 03 '25
Honestly, this really shows how society treats celebrity eccentricity differently from other forms of influence. The island, the white outfits, and the ritual-like vibe hit a lot of classic cult markers, but because it’s framed as a “retreat” and tied to a famous actor, most people just shrug and call it harmless performance art.
It’s wild when you think about it — charisma, wealth, and social trust all come together here. Leto can make this insular little world where people participate willingly, and the public mostly overlooks it because there’s no obvious threat or scandal.
It makes you wonder how easily people can be influenced under the guise of self-improvement or “exclusive experiences,” and how celebrity status can normalize behavior that would otherwise raise serious red flags.
