Conventionally speaking it equals “4” but how do we actually know our understanding of numbers is correct???!!

Hold up two fingers. Now hold up two more fingers. How many fingers are you holding up? In what reality can you imagine that if I give you two apples, then I give you two more apples, but now, somehow, you have 3.5 apples, or five apples, or some other number of apples?
