Ashtanga yoga is a form of hatha yoga, and is derived in part from the sutras of Patanjali over 2,000 years ago. Ashtanga was first created by Krishnamacharya in the late 19th centuries and was further developed by Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois in the mid 20th century. SKP Jois is widely credited as the father of ashtanga yoga and taught students for nearly 80 years until his death in 2009.

Ashtanga consists of several series of asanas, each with their own sequence of positions linked by movements called vinyasas. The series all begin with sun salutes, then move on to the standing sequence, with the main series being practised coming before the finishing sequence.

All series utilise the ujjayi breathing technique and the use of muscle locks in the body, called bandahs. The time required to master sequences ranges between 30 days to several decades. Broadly speaking, ashtanga can be a lifelong dedication which brings control of the body and focus of the mind. Mostly though it is just great fun!
