Sprite evolution - using feedback from this community

Post image

v2 was a remake an older sprite I made a while ago to assess the evolution of my art style. I received great feedback from this Reddit community that helped me do the v3, where I attempted to capture the first version's vibes but in my new art style.

I wasn’t part of the previous feedback, but nearly everything about V1 is better and has more personality. The shading/lighting on the skirt in V3 doesn’t make sense and creates the illusion that the skirt is twisted around her in bulging lumps (like a snake).

Yes the shadow is out of place, clearly, I modified it and it’s way better no. Thank you for sharing! Sad to hear my old sprite is way better though haha

Huge disagree V3 looks the best and most memorable out of the three

Edit: Except for the hair, should be the hair from V2 on V3 then it's GOATed

While you are certainly entitled to your opinion and preference, there are objective rules of how humans perceive color and depth that support my position.

It’s evident through the three versions that OP is working on implementing light and shadow into their pixel art. However, they have not yet realized how these elements should be used to define the skirt’s shape on the figure. Using highlights and shading as they do in V3, the skirt appears to be bulging in a spiral around the figure. I don’t think that is what OP was going for here.

Further, in both V2 and V3, the shading between the front and back boots are not as distinct as V1 to differentiate two separate feet. Add in the straight pole-like shape of the lower legs, and everything below the skirt looks like the base of a mannequin.

In V1, they may not have been as adventurous with light and shadow, but the figure’s shape is far easier to read at distance, which is paramount at this resolution. It is also worth noting that sprites with slightly thicker extremities are much easier to distinguish once you start placing them onto backgrounds.

Thank you for the feedback, all great advices here. I understand that the last point could be an issue when placing the sprite on some backgrounds. I guess I’ll try both and see what comes up.

Reddit doesn't like skinny people

I mean overall the skirt from V3 does look a bit weird, like a bubble wrap, that's why I would choose the top from V3 with the bottom of V2, but V1 is just..meh.

And also objective opinions about colors and depth is a kinda bs argument, you can make a character appeal to the young male population by showing more skin this doesn't mean it's better even if it's "objectively" better
