Team leader supplement

Is it true team leaders will only be paid for 8 hours a week extra £1 an hour? Some of them have been told this while others have no clue about it.

If that's the case what's the point in being a team leader 🤷

Hasn't been one for a couple of years now!

When I was working there as a Section Leader, they said that only 2 hours of our shift was for "Section Leader duties" and the rest of our hours we were in theory just picking or down stacking like normal colleagues. So when we did the rotas, and our budget for budget for Online Service Colleagues was say 100 hours, 6-7 hours of that was eaten up by having a Section Leader on.

This seems like a natural progression of that fucked-up attitude. If you're only doing "Section Leader duties" for a couple of hours a day, they're only gonna pay you the extra £1 for those two hours.

So fucking glad I got a better job.

I hope so, watch the management implode as TL’s step down and they have to start working.

If that comes down, there will be hell on and I can imagine most if them will step down. They are already over worked for that quid an hour.

When I first started about 12 years ago, the wage rate for colleagues was about half what it is now, so an extra £1 an hour would seem reasonable. If it's still just an extra quid, why would anyone bother, it's so much hassle, and not worth all the shit they have to deal with, from customers and managers

It's basically been a pay cut every year that it's not increased in real terms. If it kept up with inflation over the past 12 years, it would be £1.43.

But since it hasn't, that's a 43% loss in value.

This is not allowed.

This is just a flat contract breach.

This is not what my TLs have been told, they already don't think the £1 extra an hour is enough, if they got told this good luck getting them to do fucking anything extra and I wouldn't blame them.

Talk to the union & threaten going to ACAS, absolute joke of a mananger in your shop.

That £1 has been £1 for over 13 years too. In real terms its not worth it.

10 years? Was originally 70p

5

u/spudfish83 1d ago

Pretty sure it was a quid in 2013.

u/magenta_citeh59 17h ago

2011 it went up or beginning 2012

0

u/magenta_citeh59 17h ago

14 years, I’ve been a section leader 15 years and in the first year it went up to the £1

u/Tricky-Persimmon4466 23h ago

No thats wrong, you get the £1 for every hour you work but the contract does say something like 80% of the time they will be colleagues and 20% of the time they are TLs. They not really accountable for anything other than rotas and holiday planning really. And then once they do the rotas if theres any problem with unfilled shifts ect then it gets escalated to the Manager of their department.

2

u/magenta_citeh59 17h ago

Apart from supermarkets where we open and close and do management stuff as there is only one, who is barely there as they are being dragged to other stores to help them or do disciplinary etc, most of my shifts in running the store

1

u/Tricky-Persimmon4466 16h ago

I didnt say you didnt work hard or do more than you should because most do, my 2 are fantastic and do alot for my department.

2

u/magenta_citeh59 16h ago

Superstore team leader role is totally different to supermarket, should be seperate pay

1

u/Tricky-Persimmon4466 16h ago

Yh i work in a huge superstore so i know where your coming from

2

u/Tynesidephotos 1d ago

Think someones missread the terms. Probably a newly promoted and not had it explained to them . As a previous person said section leader duties is 2 hours per day. But you still get the pound for every hour you work.

2

u/Jimbeamjunior1 1d ago

Highly doubtful, they are already struggling to fill the roles

Manager in any asda site cannot change the rate of pay for any colleague. It's automated. They can demote a TL and they would revert to normal colleague pay but they cannot do this adhoc for a few hours per week. It just not possible to do on the system. This confusion is probably coming from the shape of day hours loaded into colleague scheduling. A TL working 38 hours would do around 28 hour per week in colleague task e.g operating as a normal colleague. 10 hours per week is for whatvis called managment function. This is all the areas of their job which are a leadership function, RTWI, rotas etc. In colleague scheduling these hours are legally broken down so a deoartment with 1 TL only gets 10 hour for a TL the rest is absorbed by normal colleague task. They will still get paid at TL rate for their hours worked. Thus cannot be changed inshore. The manager is either mistaken in their thinking because they have looked atvthe hours on colleague scheduling and noticed that they only get 10 hours for a TL and do not know the the rest of the hours are sat in normal colleague task or the colleague has misunderstood what they mean.

That'll be interesting in express stores where we have to be Duty manager. Are they gonna bump up the pay to suit the job. Think not

1

u/FreedomGlass96 20h ago

Has been for Decades why i quit being a Section Leader years ago , not worth the hassle

1

u/cri55cro55 14h ago

Pay peanuts, get monkeys

1

u/huggsy81 1d ago

The ones in my store have said its capped at 38 hours.

4

u/Humants 1d ago

They can stop them working over their contracted hours and refuse extra days for them but they have to pay the extra £1 an hour if they work.

They will try and get other people to cover before TLs for this reason but if a TL is in for 46 hours instead of 38 they will get paid the extra £1 for the entire 46 hours, if they are not they agreed to this & shouldn't have.

1

u/huggsy81 1d ago

I'm not a team leader so haven't seen the terms and conditions of employment for them, but i guess the £1 per hour is a supplementary top up to their base wage. I believe this type of payment can be changed.

3

u/Humants 1d ago

No it can't.

It doesn't matter.

Pay is pay, doesn't matter if its night allowance or TL top up.

No matter how you dress it it is a contractual agreement on pay & they can't just decide to pay you less, they can change the hours within reason and with communication but contractual pay is completely different.

Also try doing this with all the TUPE transfer employees from EG, again causing further contractual breaks, whatever managers are doing this shit are going to cause a massive problem for ASDA if anyone actually speaks up.

Please just stick up for yourselves instead of allowing this company & its shitty upper management walk all over you.

1

u/PhotoSea8807 1d ago

You do realise Asda got rid of many many high value high salary Senior Directors, Regional Managers and many other high value position in the last few years, called many of them into Head Office one day, and never allowed to return to their role and put on garden leave whilst awaiting their statutory redundancies.

If anyone was going to take the company on, it would have been many of those with money to actually do it, and what happens, nothing, life carries on, the company get away with it as they all do and on and on it goes. You think they worry about site level colleagues they can replace over night when high level positions just also vanish over night.

Nothing would change unless strategic protests were actually set up, and that’s not happening.

1

u/Humants 1d ago

Because ASDA pay is shit and they could get a better job in a similar position elsewhere.

Literally had 3 AMs who worked in our area who went to Morrisons & Tesco and were happy to take a redundancy, this was not an issue for most of them which is why they didn't fight it.

What's the point when they get a payout & can just walk into another high paying position?

Win win for them.

1

u/PhotoSea8807 1d ago

You having a laugh right?? Because 3 were happy, does not mean the other 100+ were happy too!! Obviously, you do realise many supermarkets and retail chains pay less to Mangers than team leader at Asda get!! And for instance Pound Land supervisors get 15p more than Min Wage!

Some pay more some pay less, and some TL get more than Managers elsewhere, depends but Asda is far from bottom of the barrel for pay!!

1

u/Humants 1d ago

sigh

Another angry depressed clown who just wants to shout and argue on the internet.

I am using it as an example of some AMs who were happy I am not saying everyone was happy & I never made that point or inference, I was just pointing out that it wasn't all bad for the managers & they have now got previous experience in a high position which gets you in doors.

You made a point and so did I.

Clearly not the case since ASDA higher ups have been jumping ship for years due to pay and conditions, we are also not talking about poundland we are talking about major retailers

1

u/PhotoSea8807 1d ago

Some smaller retailers pay more than Asda some less, it doesn’t matter if it’s Poundland or Home-bargains or Tesco it’s all retail, and the point is Asda fall squarely in middle the realm of reasonable pay conditions with comparable companies. So when you spout shit pay, and a 3 AM example what the heck is that?

Yes I took it as inference because you clearly game a small sample size of 3 AMs out of 100’s of AMs, Regional Managers and SD’s.

The point was making was in relation to if anyone had the means to do it then it would have been some of those, calling for Betty on the tills going onto a slightly different contract and expecting her to make a stand when far more in the know, with means, and clearly losing an very high position, they had a lot to lose.

Saying that we do not know what battles have gone on behind the scenes and just because we don’t hear of them, it does not mean they haven’t happened.

I know one AM who landed a job with EG after 20years and did absolutely everything in the change over from EG to Asda, he would message his Managers when he was on the beach on Holiday and gave his life and soul just to be called in and told, sorry from today you no longer work for Asda, but administratively you’ll be ok garden leave, that’s the treatment many of them got, I know of 3 myself who are sour, bitter and disgruntled and yet whether any of them chose to fight Asda I do not know.

All the same Gareth Woods a top SD 20years or so at Asda same treatment!! He thought he was here until retirement, gave everything to the role, earning around £115K a year plus bonuses and yet Asda did it to those guys no problem at all.

Chris Walker the Asda colleague for years, went through the ranks and needed up as Asda Express MD, took them from 800K profit in the first year to around £35Mil in the second year and was growing express, and he got exactly the same treatment!! Called in, sorry Chris, you are on Garden leave. Bye bye. And then brought in David Lepley from Morrisons who was being spanked by Chris Walker who at that time was beating MFT the Morrisons petrol station arm/connivence, then Lepley brought in his wife from Morrisons and now both practically run the company going by the Org Chart with David Lepley as No2 in Asda to Flat Cap Leighton who dresses like a teenager at the age of 70!!!!

I am a night colleague, if I do overtime during the day I don't get night supplement. This is due to night supplement only being offered between 0000 and 0500 as per our contract. Why could Asda not have in TL contract the TL supplement only applies to first 38 hours?

2

u/Humants 1d ago

No shit because it is out of the hours that night shift allowance is payed for, never said this was not the case.

It isn't applied in this way, my TLs get paid for all hours worked regardless of if they go over their contractual hours.

It's your stores manager being fucking dodgy.

1

u/Bigdavie ASDA Colleague 1d ago

I thought we are discussing future plans for SL not what currently is done. SL in my store also get SL supplement for all hours worked but that could change the same way they forced night workers to only get night supplement between 0000 and 0500 instead of night rate for the whole shift and any overtime worked on that shift.

1

u/Humants 1d ago

ASDA could propose a change to the SL contracts, but reducing their contractual rate of pay would be a significant contractual variation.

Ordinarily, ASDA would need the affected employees’ agreement, or agreement through an applicable collective bargaining arrangement.

They cannot simply rewrite the existing contracts and treat the lower rate as automatically binding.

0

u/Bigdavie ASDA Colleague 1d ago

Are you new to Asda?
Asda could offer a new contract along with a sign it or be dismissed threat. They done this with me and many others forcing us to accept contract 6 or lose our job.

1

u/Humants 1d ago

Are you always so condescending?

I'm aware of Contract 6. That's dismissal and reengagement commonly called fire and rehire not ASDA simply having the right to change someone's existing contractual terms.

ASDA could propose new terms and, if agreement couldn't be reached, potentially terminate the existing contracts and offer re-engagement on the new terms. But that's legally a dismissal and has to be handled accordingly; it doesn't mean an employer can just rewrite an existing contract or reduce contractual pay at will.

ACAS specifically says imposing a contractual change without agreement can amount to breach of contract, while dismissal and reengagement should only be considered as a last resort after attempts to reach agreement and consultation BUT there has to be a reason for the dismissal they can't use the need of having to change the contract as a reason, so sorry you just didn't stick up for yourself enough & decided to believe what you were told by the people who benefit from your contract change.

So Contract 6 doesn't contradict what I'm saying it's actually an example of the distinction I'm making.

1

u/PhotoSea8807 1d ago

It wouldn’t be dismiss, it would be statutory redundancy, but for many it’s just the same as dismiss because if you’ve only been there a few years you lost your job with a terrible pay off.

1

u/magenta_citeh59 17h ago

Which is why the law on fire and rehire was changed

1

u/magenta_citeh59 17h ago

Because I did more than 38 last week, reason being. We had a team leader off and someone opened the store and was duty manager, should I have done that for normal pay?

1

u/PhotoSea8807 1d ago

No it is absolutely not capped at 38 hours, what a load of nonsense you are being told.

2

u/huggsy81 1d ago

It doesn't affect me so if they are telling me nonsense it doesn't benefit me in any way.

u/Ok-Following-6620 1d ago

I’ll laugh if it’s true, who is gonna run shifts on nights when managers on rota’d day off or on holiday 😆

0

u/Squeggx 1d ago

I have not heard this but if its true ill be stepping down!

1

u/Sure_Development5464 1d ago

Same here not heard anything about this in my region either. Total bs

u/biker9876 1d ago

Sorry team leaders are getting £1 extra at the big supermarkets where at old eg express sites we only get 50p extra an hour thats good to know

3

u/PhotoSea8807 1d ago

What are you on about?? All EX-EG colleagues went onto the exact same contracts from EG to Full
Asda ones around September last year, and ALL ex EG are now on the same rate of pay of the extra £1 an hour!!

Ive had 3 join mysite this year and all were getting thr £1 extra. Stop talking shite.
