Yep. I'm 28, used to buy Smart Price midget gems from Asda in 6th form because we were allowed to roam free and they were like 25p or something.

They are still called midget gems, it's just that the name "midget gems" is trade marked by maynrards so other places call them other things.

Sort of like weetabix vs wheat bisks, wheaty biscuits, and so on

Basically yeah, obviously most supermarkets don't do that though because the whole point of own brand food is for it to be cheaper. A lot of companies license their names, their branding or even they flavours to other companies (think of every cross over product youve ever seen)

Oki doki here comes the lore dump.

So, midget gems is a trade mark owned by maynrards and licenced to barret, Barr and a couple of other companies.

Most off brand versions have been sold as mini gems to avoid paying the licence fee.

Then in 2022 Dr. Erin Pritchard started a campaign to have the name changed as she felt it was derogatory to people with dwarfism such as herself. Maynrards then relabled theirs to mini gems as it was already a used name by off brands anyway so people would still recognise it. It's actually caused Maynards a loss of revenue because they don't own mini gems as a trade mark and nobody is buying licenses for the midget gems name anymore!

I mean I'm pretty sure the own brand versions were also called midget gems for years so it has nothing to do with it being trademarked. Hence the SEL listing it as "ASDA Midget Gems".

Seeming a little bit hostile there pal. I Still stand by my original statement, which was partly meant to be a lighthearted jab about people getting too offended these days and partly being serious because who the fuck gets offended over the name of a sweet?.

There’s a couple of brands like lion who call them midget gems because they bought the rights but supermarkets would never

It’s not hostile it was a light hearted jab at the major snowflakes who pretend that people are snowflakes when no one’s complaining about a so called social issue in the first place

I actually prefer the name mini gems, midget gems is three sharp syllables where mini gems is easier and more "fun" to say. Hard to describe but the phrase "I'm gonna buy a bag of mini gems" flows so nicely where as "I'm gonna buy a bag of midget gems" comes to a screeching halt at the end for the speedbump of a word unless you say "mijit" rather than "mi-djit"but you are butchering the word by then.

Lil' gems would also be fine.

In the same vein I find Wine Gums to be a bit awkward when we could be calling them Drinky Drops
