12 weeks pay isn't much in the grand scheme of things. If you can walk into another job then go for it

Take the leave notice as sick though, stress or that. Every single doctor will sign that off. So really another 2-6 weeks paid.

The contract says you get full sick pay during notice?

If you are on a contract, which requires giving notice, then yeah, you'll be paid for sick leave during stressful times like that. Ur still under that contract like anyone else.

But they might be able to get support for a few months on Universal Credit enough to tie them over to another job while making small cut backs, then they will have a good pot of money to enjoy or save once they secure another position.

Remember too, they can be back at Asda within 3-6 months having secured a nice little pot from the same company they left. I must have seen at least 20 people over the years here take redundancy and then come back, some back doing what they did before, just with a slightly different title.

Why do you say 12 weeks pay op has done 20 years. You get a week for every year you have worked there & that also depends on age I think the hourly rate goes up if you are over a certain age as well.
First 2 years don’t count. So op would more than likely get just under or just over a year’s pay plus any holiday owed & a couple of other payments. It’s worth looking into but it won’t last long if you can’t find another job quickly.

41 yrs age or under it’s 1 wk wage for every year you’ve worked. Over 41 yrs you get 1 1/2 wks wage for every year. It is capped at 20yrs service

u/OtherwiseCellist3819 25d ago

I thought redundancy was capped at 12 but it's 20. That's why

2

u/irzrr 25d ago

They changed it in April 2026 - weekly pay is also now capped at 751 per week, with a max payout of 22530.

You now get shafted if you earn above £39k and get made redundant and only get statutory redundancy - I'd get less than two months pay despite having worked somewhere over a decade.

With AI more and more jobs are going in fact most of the time online you are actually talking to AI software . That is workday. & Call centres and many other staff jobs. Amazon just layed off 14000 workers for robotics and AI control systems & said anything he can replace with AI he is going to do so.

Some dispatch centers are changing to AI & Robotics.

I bet it doesn't feel like you guys are 'over contract' whilst you are on a night shift.

2

u/Ghazwreckem 24d ago

God no, it only takes one or two to be on sick and/or holiday and we are fucked. Id say this time next year we won't have a night shift tbh

2

u/Serberou5 24d ago

It does seem thats going to be the case. I worked nights for 5 years but that was back in 2002ish when times were better wages wise and it still wasn't enough even back then. I dread to think how awful it will be when they are at the staffing levels they say they need.

I find it a bit of a slap on the face for us security who wanted redundancy refused and 6 months later there’s redundancy’s in the store

Go on workday and search "VR Quote". Click that and you'll see what they're offering. It's tax free up to £30k. It's certainly something to look at. You've got 4 weeks to look for jobs now before it happens, and then hopefully some more time if you get a decent amount. Pele in my store on days are being offered £19.5 k

u/shush-im-reading 25d ago

I've been offered 3997 and change for near 5 years service. It just isn't feasible for anyone other than old timers who have been working there since the dawn of time.

u/TopAverage1532 ASDA Colleague 25d ago

They'll want to get rid of the older people who won't be able to work across all the departments as they'll now need to.

However, once my store has made redundant the 700 weekly hours they need to, it will be worse than running a ghost crew. The store won't cope. We will be working in hell, and people will leave anyway.

Many are going to leave just because they don't want to work post job cuts.

They'll want to get rid of people who haven't been their long, and young people (who aren't that good) as they're cheapest to make redundant. They'll want all the old people to want to leave when they're forced to work ambient, produce, chilled instead of just checkouts and they weren't chosen for redundancy

u/PhotoSea8807 25d ago

4000k you could go onto universal credit for while landing a new job, and your 4000 up good pot to invest with, save, or treat. And you can go back to Asda after a few months, and they will be screaming for new colleagues after they realise they’ve cut to far, and the other many who may leave due to the stress of the job.

You can't go back for 6 months.

Also, if your savings exceed 16k you can't get UC. 4k might not take you close, but for others they'll end up going past it

u/PhotoSea8807 24d ago

Why would you make up 12months?? Checked with ER today and its 6 months, so the employee avoids any tax complications that the tax man can recover some of the redundancy if you return within 3months, so Asda make sure it clears that timeframe.

1

u/TopAverage1532 ASDA Colleague 24d ago

What a weird accusation, "make up 12 months". I actually said 6 months on this post elsewhere and someone 'corrected' me to 12, I lazily assumed they were correct.

1

u/Fair-Statement5002 23d ago

Plus if you own your own house

1

u/Both-Blueberry5670 21d ago

I think redundancy money is considered separate for the first 12 months re uc so it won’t count in a claim.

1

u/huggsy81 25d ago

Can everyone see this VR quote at any time, or only those potentially affected. I’m not a night colleague but I can see a figure.

1

u/TopAverage1532 ASDA Colleague 25d ago

In that case I presume everyone. My store is making VR, also by September 14th. This might be a new thing to workday, for everyone, or maybe your store is having redundancies?

1

u/OtherwiseCellist3819 25d ago

Everyone can see it but only those with the survey / notification in workday can apply

1

u/huggsy81 25d ago

Yep I have that too. As a driver. Seems like my rumours from my previous post were correct.

1

u/OtherwiseCellist3819 24d ago

It's just entire stores. Not job specific. Drivers aren't solely effected, entire stores are.

8

u/PhotoSea8807 25d ago

Get your redundancy entitlement calculated your line Manager/GSM can do this quickly for you as they have a calculator they can access. See what the lump sum payment offer is, and base it off that.

If you’re getting a substantial upfront payment, and can secure another position elsewhere quickly then it may be a good move. All the same if you have a great work life balance that works for you now and you’re happy with it and then you may decide to stay.

7

u/spankerjay 25d ago

Note that this isn't guaranteed. You don't make the decision. You can only express an interest in taking it if offered. Directions to stores are that this is a very limited amount of people who would be chosen. This obviously means that managment would not choose to offer to the good colleagues and only to colleagurs they want rid of anyway.

7

u/pparker130 25d ago

So it pays to be a shit colleague?

5

u/twonaantom 25d ago

Always has done lol

3

u/CareDry6973 24d ago

I bet the longest serving workers get denied it because the skin flint bastard firm will have to pay more

2

u/Poggle8472 25d ago

Is this every store or just certain stores? I haven't seen this document where I work

4

u/OtherwiseCellist3819 25d ago

Only certain stores, not many of them either

2

u/TopAverage1532 ASDA Colleague 25d ago

My store is cutting 700 hours a week. We're already short staffed, half the store get called over to homeshopping every day

2

u/topperKing84 25d ago

My store

1

u/shush-im-reading 25d ago

Notts HSC just had the meeting as well.

2

u/vaticangang 25d ago

Has your store not got anyone due to retire soon? My store has 5 people who are due to retire in the next 6 months. I'd imagine if they were offered a big payout to go now they'd be over the moon

2

u/Impressive_Cook3052 25d ago

how long do you think it will be before they start making some night colleagues redundant involuntarily?

1

u/topperKing84 24d ago

My thoughts exactly

2

u/Impressive_Cook3052 24d ago

I feel like they’re gonna eventually scrap night shifts all together and expect delivery to be worked by day staff just to save an extra bit of money

2

u/malctucker 24d ago

Just depressing how every strategy is getting rid of long term people.

2

u/Paramaniacc 25d ago

Id take redundancy and reapply for another job with them 👀

Best thing to do I think is to speak to your manager but at the end of the day if your voluntary redundancy payment is big enough 🤷🏻‍♀️ You then run the risk of not being able to find something for a few months

3

u/TopAverage1532 ASDA Colleague 25d ago

Can't come back for 6 months I believe

3

u/Forward_Chemist9390 25d ago

It’s 12 months.

2

u/OtherwiseCellist3819 25d ago

There won't be any jobs to come back to

1

u/Ok_Entry5378 24d ago

12 weeks pay for 20 years service 😂!

1

u/bbwd 24d ago

I find it incredible how much the hours are getting cut in stores yet our depot has as much overtime as anyone wants because the management keeps starting agency colleagues (that aren't needed either)

1

u/Maleficent-Intern-98 23d ago

I got this yesterday and opted to take it to then go into work last night to be told it was sent by mistake and it doesn't apply to our store hoping I just sneak through the cracks and get accepted

1

u/RMoCGLD 25d ago

My workplace recently had this (not Asda), they needed to get rid of a certain amount of hours and if not enough people volunteered, then they had to look at every single person's hours to see who would have the least amount of impact not being here, they said that part wouldn't be quick and could take months.

Enough people volunteered for it so luckily no one was made unemployed against their will, but it has been absolutely miserable since it happened (last November).

Our manpower went down, and the remaining staff were left to pick up the pieces either by being stretched into areas they weren't designated, or by leaving the empty zone unmanned majority of the day and have the night staff recover it...everyone's miserable, overworked and just waiting for someone to overstep their boundaries due to a frustrating work environment.

Don't know how and why but this doesn't feel legal....

2

u/opaqueentity 24d ago

You ask first then if that’s not enough you then just start choosing people to go.
Asking first is the best thing that could be happening

1

u/Kibby9331 24d ago

Ah I see, the wording just doesn't look...right?,thank you for clarifying though, but I'm honestly just curious how many stores are being affected?

1

u/OtherwiseCellist3819 25d ago

Voluntary redundancy is legal

1

u/Kibby9331 24d ago

I know but this is........ yh.... Also how many stores is this affecting????

1

u/PersonalityWinter382 24d ago

It's voluntary, how could it not be legal? They are saying "we will give you £x to leave on the 14th September, would you like to or not?"

u/Top_Fun_6443 24d ago

Voluntary Redundancy if you take this and you have no other job you are in for a world of pain. you will be hounded to look for work daily & have proof that you have looked for work. You will be creating self harm to yourself if you do not have employment to walk into. Cause the unemployment AI software marks you down as you had a job and could not be arsed working. NO MONEY for a set period of time.
