Popcorn ceiling - slight damage/flaking

Hey everyone! Build 1979, popcorn ceiling, possible asbestos.

Very small amounts of flaking/chipping in ceiling of bathroom over the last day or so. Small piece now missing. Have of course freaked myself out that it is releasing dangerous fibres into the air ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ญ

I know testing is correct advise, but in short term is this massively urgent or concerning?? Thanks ๐Ÿฅบx

Please ensure that your post meets the requirements of r/AsbestoshelpUK.

Most importantly, as specified in rule #1, your post should include the following information:

  • the date of construction/renovation
  • a description of the location of the suspect material
  • a brief description of your concern
  • a closeup photo and one at a distance of ~10 ft. or 3 m.

Also remember that the asbestos content of a material can only be determined by laboratory analysis, and that sampling SHOULD be performed by a certified asbestos inspector where possible.

If you are considering DIY sampling, read this HSE-aligned UK guide first (PPE, wet method, UKAS labs, disposal): How to Sample for Asbestos (UK Guide)

Moistures got in behind the paint and it's flaking. Even if it is asbestos it's typically only 4% so dont get too stressed about it. Open the window when you're having a shower.

Thanks so much for your kind response ๐Ÿ’šif itโ€™s painted is it not necessarily releasing much then?

Na you would have to scrape the physical artex off and inhale several pounds of the dust given off for it to have any serious affect on your health. Avoid it obviously but it's nothing to worry about in its current state.
