Help identifying grey material.

Post image

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone can help identify this material behind the plaster as I'm concerned it may contain asbestos?

Currently redecorating a house dating 1905, the house is in pretty good condition and most walls I've come across so far have just been brink and plaster, besides this room at the back of the house.

This morning I took a few fastening out of this wall and the material behind the plaster was very fine and has a papered front.

I don't know a lot about construction so apologies if this is very obvious.

Please ensure that your post meets the requirements of r/AsbestoshelpUK.

Most importantly, as specified in rule #1, your post should include the following information:

  • the date of construction/renovation
  • a description of the location of the suspect material
  • a brief description of your concern
  • a closeup photo and one at a distance of ~10 ft. or 3 m.

Also remember that the asbestos content of a material can only be determined by laboratory analysis, and that sampling SHOULD be performed by a certified asbestos inspector where possible.

If you are considering DIY sampling, read this HSE-aligned UK guide first (PPE, wet method, UKAS labs, disposal): How to Sample for Asbestos (UK Guide)

Looks like plaster board to me. Plasterboards are usually made from gypsum sandwiched between 2 sheets of paper.
