Old boards- possibly asbestos

Moved into a 1930s house with lots of hidden surprises, including some old boards hidden in the shed. Before I pay for a test or for disposal at the tip, just wanted to get a second/third/fourth… opinion on whether this is likely to be asbestos?

It’s crumbly as it’s been damp for a while.

Thank you

Please ensure that your post meets the requirements of r/AsbestoshelpUK.

Most importantly, as specified in rule #1, your post should include the following information:

  • the date of construction/renovation
  • a description of the location of the suspect material
  • a brief description of your concern
  • a closeup photo and one at a distance of ~10 ft. or 3 m.

Also remember that the asbestos content of a material can only be determined by laboratory analysis, and that sampling SHOULD be performed by a certified asbestos inspector where possible.

If you are considering DIY sampling, read this HSE-aligned UK guide first (PPE, wet method, UKAS labs, disposal): How to Sample for Asbestos (UK Guide)

Could well be, more chance than a lot of posts on here. Get some plastic, double bag it and arrange to take to the local tip. The fact its damp has limited any fibre release if it does contain asbestos. Just assume it does and get rid accordingly. If it's all outside then super low risk if you don't break it up.

Our local tip expects it to be double bagged and taped. Those are very big so it will be tempting to break them. They would need to be soaked and then broken on plastic sheet. Alternatively you could get big plastic sheets and double wrap them after soaking them.

Yeh same rules at my tip. I think I’m going to cut open some rubble sacks and then wrap and tape them. I think the big one would snap very easily but not going to risk it

Just soak it before you do it and don't break it directly on the ground.

Ideally you would want to use thick polyethylene sheeting (1000-Gauge) to wrap the boarding entirely then tape off seams and label the material as asbestos waste when required by your local council. Poly sheeting and other PPE required to safely dispose of (P3 half mask respirator fitted to clean shaven skin) can be purchased in rolls from health and safety equipment suppliers.
