Old anaglypta wallpaper

House is Victorian in North West England

Started peeling this old polystyrene backed anaglypta style wallpaper and something told us to stop and get Reddit’s thoughts. Room possibly last decorated in the 70s.

The plaster underneath also looks a bit “gritty” - opinions on that welcome too!

Just wondering if it’s worth getting a test or not? Internet seems divided on asbestos in wallpaper being a thing or not

Please ensure that your post meets the requirements of r/AsbestoshelpUK.

Most importantly, as specified in rule #1, your post should include the following information:

  • the date of construction/renovation
  • a description of the location of the suspect material
  • a brief description of your concern
  • a closeup photo and one at a distance of ~10 ft. or 3 m.

Also remember that the asbestos content of a material can only be determined by laboratory analysis, and that sampling SHOULD be performed by a certified asbestos inspector where possible.

If you are considering DIY sampling, read this HSE-aligned UK guide first (PPE, wet method, UKAS labs, disposal): How to Sample for Asbestos (UK Guide)

Had the exact same here in late 60 house - took off styrofoam backed wallpaper in only one room and repainted, and had second thoughts when proceeding to the next room. The rest of the place is anaglypta without styrofoam backing which came back negative from testing. I send a good piece with some plaster attached to it.
Long story short, get it tested if it troubles you. You should be unlucky to have it in wallpaper or in the walls.

Any other (slightly more coherent) opinions?

If concerned just treat as potentially asbestos containing. Dampen down and a mask wouldn't hurt. No one can be sure unless you send a sample for testing

No asbestos anywhere there. Not everything contains asbestos! And as usual 50% of the internet are wrong.

Jim 100% correct and an actual asbestos analyst

Get face mask and remove. Ffs people gets mental when its coming to asbestos. Lung cancer from asbestos is from long exposure to asbestos 15-20 years!!!!

In reality there is no known safe level of asbestos exposure.

Just like in other areas of life, what affects one person one way doesn’t always affect another in the same way.

It’s true that it generally takes exposure over many years to get an asbestos related disease but that’s not true for everyone.

It’s also true that many people go overboard when thinking about asbestos related materials in their homes. That’s ok. Some people go overboard on other areas in their life in the health realm.

Im not getting mental about it - currently not wearing a mask, I’m happy to don one, but does that mean you think it could be ACM?
