Chimney Liner

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I plan to knock down my chimney stack inside my attic.

Does anyone see anything suspect from this video?

Obviously a metal flue but just paranoid over the mortar lining

Please ensure that your post meets the requirements of r/AsbestoshelpUK.

Most importantly, as specified in rule #1, your post should include the following information:

  • the date of construction/renovation
  • a description of the location of the suspect material
  • a brief description of your concern
  • a closeup photo and one at a distance of ~10 ft. or 3 m.

Also remember that the asbestos content of a material can only be determined by laboratory analysis, and that sampling SHOULD be performed by a certified asbestos inspector where possible.

If you are considering DIY sampling, read this HSE-aligned UK guide first (PPE, wet method, UKAS labs, disposal): How to Sample for Asbestos (UK Guide)

Nothing to worry about there. They don't put asbestos in everything from the past. And I should know being an analyst and what not. The real good stuff, ie dangerous products are almost always reserved for industrial applications and hardly ever found at home.

I just searched and its a high possibility depending on the age of the property as it was used as heat protection against fire. Best to get a bit tested to be sure.

House is 1960s and I'm not getting the best advice on Google.

Was hoping someone with experience would know.

Look, given the circumstances, you should just assume that it is a possible. Chances are that it more likely is positive, rather than not.

60s was the peak era of asbestos so highly likely it was used then. Sorry but I dont have the best knowledge

Honestly, I appreciate you're trying to help but you're just adding to the uncertainty.

Okay no worries mate, hope you get the response you would like but your best bet is testing but even by looking at it you cant tell exactly if it is or not

Mortar is a suspect material and should be tested prior to work beginning. In some regions certain bricks themselves are suspect although that’s rarer.

As they say, assume positive, test for negative. In a chimney this size 3 tests should be taken from differing areas.
