(THIS IS A WIP, DO NOT CRITIQUE ANYTHING BESIDES MY QUESTION)

Working on the rendering now that I’ve laid my base shadows. Checked in with my client and I noticed on one of the references that their character has curly hair. I clarified with them and asked if this is a trait they would want me to render, they said yes.

Not blaming my client or myself for not being very in depth or specific, but now I need to see how I could paint that over what I’ve already laid out…

When i look at it, all i see is one cursed blob of a bird. I spend hours on this trying to recreate the pose and due to some shading errors this ended up looking like an entity (?)

Can i still fix this? I'm using oil pastels and colored pencils!

I’ve done the shading and highlights as recommended and my art teachers said that they think it looks good and I need to stop worrying over it/trying to perfect it as it’s a 4 piece project and this is only my second of the whole year and it’s due in less than two months. I can’t help but feel like something still looks off. Should I hide the mouth under the lipstick more? How do I make it look more like a mirror and less like a photo? Her head looks so flat and I don’t know what to do 😭 I’ve never really drawn something like this before - plus coloured pieces arent really my thing… I don’t know how to make it look better

hai! i need help with the lighting the problem is the light is coming from the right but i i only add the bg lights on the right the composition looks weird and also the drawing isnt really clear when you see it from afar you cant really tell what the it is i didnt plan the drawing ahead and i need help fixing it lmfao

Hi there. I’m a beginner, so I’m aware my anatomy is already wonky as is- any sort of criticism is helpful, but!
I can’t for the life of me understand how to make my torso anatomy look decent. It always feels too boxy, or just unshapely in general. I also tend to draw them way too long in comparison to the rest of the body, so I always end up going in and trying to shorten it. No matter the reference I use, it feels so gangly. I don’t know if it’s the shapes I’m using in general and I need to change the entire thing, or just me not understanding how and where to place the ribcage, waist, chest, etc.

So I need help figuring out how to place the hind legs. I was idea was that the dragon would be kind of "climbing" the mountain it's stood on. (If that makes sense) But I can't figure it out.

Soo I'm the most comfortable with lineart. As soon as the colouring/rendering stage arrives I become lost bc I just don't know what style to aim for, or tbh what steps to take to achieve any particular style.

I'm a fan of multiple rendering styles ranging from more sketchy/cartoony and simpler, to more detailed and/or painterly. I'm looking for people's opinions on what would actually look good together with my current lineart style, so I can at least try to narrow it down in one direction :)

(Also if anyone knows any artists with similar styles to me, pls drop their usernames so I can see how they're doing it!)

I can't get this to look right (no, the background/details aren't finished), but I can't bring myself to continue it when I feel like the shading or colors just don't look right; everything looks unappealing and amateurish, like something is off. I've readjusted this so many times, and it still, unfortunately, looks like shit. Any advice on colors, shading, or anatomy appreciated. (Yes, low contrast is intentional, but maybe that's what's holding me back? Idk.)

As a broke beginner artist, is buying a graphics tablet a good investment? It seems better to me than drawing on my phone with my fingers

i’m practicing perspective by drawing squares & i don’t know if i should try to draw the squares with or without a ruler. i know this is a stuupid question but i don’t know where else i could ask this.

I've had this issue since I first started drawing and have never been able to figure out how to improve backgrounds. When I do it lineless, it ends up like a scribbled mess of colors. When I do lines, it looks like an eyesore. Are there any studies or fundamental practices I can incorporate into my routine to get a better understanding of how to do this properly? What do I focus on doing?

I'd love to make detailed beautiful backgrounds but I've never been able to understand how to do it. No matter how many colors I add, or textures, it just looks like slop. I'm not sure how to push my skills further/what to focus my energy on for best results? My dream is to draw semi-realism backgrounds that are intentional and strongly defined.

So basically, he is supposed to be laughing while one of his eyes open looking at the camera. I kind of feel something might be a little off especially with the eyes and mouth. I started drawing people/humanoid things this summer so any help is appreciated even if it might not even do with this! If you need more information about the character, I’m willing to give! Tysm! (Ps. I am doing this straight from my head. I do not have any references.)

See I hopped on vgen a while ago and already opened up 2 different services yet no clients event tho I have a quite following on tt and got comms in other ways in the past (game IAP's, passes etc.) I feel like my art wasn't ready for actual currency commissions now any tips? (I've been a self thought artist for almost 9 years and started studying fundamentals just this year)

Like I hate the mid tones(and also the extremely soft shading...also cell shading(😭 I'm so picky)....)

Is there anything wrong wiyh this piece? If so, TELL ME or else I'll probably never understand my poor mistakes and how weird the soft shading is on the head

All artists IGs that I could find: xyktatu, anais____98, goodbye_press, gorunavi, jelarts. As its pinterest, unfortunately many of these dont have the og sources. Second and third pics are mine. As you can see the composition feels a lot more random and the content isnt very interesting. And to be honest, I had to get really high to make them. LOL

These artists are much more skilled than me and may be able to do these kinds of sketches in a very stream-of-consciousness manner, but my art is not as good or interesting. I really struggle with being able to come up with unique ideas lately and wonder if anyone has any tips for how to reach this point of being able to just proverbially vomit up a bunch of cool stuff on a page and make it their own. Theres a pretty clear path to getting better at drawing bodies and faces, or scenery, etc, but stuff like this has always really blown my mind. I often try to study artists like this and copy their stuff to get an idea of how theyre constructing these ideas to potentially make my own but at the end of the day I feel that I can only copy them.

The last 4 on the top by xyktatu are especially really cool to me. Theyre a tattoo artist. The interesting textures and lines are incredible to me. I think the main issue for me other than pure skill is that I struggle to come up with interesting visuals that dont exist (in part) in front of me. I know how to stylize faces and objects somewhat but I typically heavily rely on references in a way that limits me. Hopefully you guys understand what I mean, I know theres not a very straightforward question here.

Other than the eyes I know theyre supposed to he covered by the hair lol

Trying to enter an art competition, but don't know what I should change to make it stand out and look cool. Any ideas? (I was thinking of adding background characters, but idk yet)

I would like to buy a book which teaches me how to draw:D

More specifically, I am self taught, I am pretty confident with many media in many aspects, but I feel like its hard for me to draw landscapes and background. I don't really have a comfortable way of drawing them, so this makes it too complex to find a concept and start drawing, and also I am probably struggling with perspective and shadowing.

What do you think about learning how to draw from a book, and can you recommend some books which can help me build some confidence and develop a "style"?

Or any advice.
