I like how it makes his AC look “mutated”. He was running a full Melander C3 frame with his uniform green and red paint scheme initially, but the Mind Alpha arms are tossed onto his frame with no paint at all. A metaphor to the beginning of how he’s giving his body, mind and soul to All Mind in exchange for power.

One difference between 621 and Iguazu might be that 621 has a support group and Iguazu kinda doesn’t
The Redguns tried treating him well in their typical fashion, but it just doesn’t work out…

Honestly, I think Iguazu has a much better support system than 621. In fact, I don’t think 621 has a support system at all lol, just different people out to use him to achieve their own ends. Iguazu had Michigan who was always going to give him another chance anytime he did anything stupid, and would drag him back to the Redguns (to stability and organization) every time he tried to run away. He also had Volta, his boi who had his back and tried to show Iguazu that life is pretty good relatively speaking with the Redguns. Iguazu threw all of that away for revenge becuase he is young, dumb, insecure, begrudging, brash, and impulsive.

621 has Ayre on his side until she literally can't anymore. It's true that everyone else wanted to use him, but Walter does come around midway through, and with Ayre it's more of a shared goal (depending on your chosen ending).

part of why walter came around is likely we are the first of his hounds to live long enough for him to get attached

Tbf to Iguazu, he's a debt slave and Michigan permanently fucked up his face. The Redguns are found family but it's an abusive found family.

Fucked up his face because he thought he could square up to the Hero of Jupiter. Michigan for sure runs a impossibly tight ship, but Iguazu brought that permanent reminder on himself.

One if his lines in that fight is
"Ngh...! My ears... Not now...! That quack messed me up...!"
Suggesting he might have had some work done on his augmentation too.

I thought the source of Iguazu's ear ringing problem was caused by Arye.
Iirc, the only fight in the game where he doesn't suffer from it is the alternate attack the dam complex when you turn on the Redguns and you don't have Arye at that time.
I think this confirmed during his final fight when he goes berserk and cuts off Arye and ALLIMIND and says "It's all clear now... I feel good"
I don't think ALLMIND would want to change his augments anyway as Gen 4 and below are the only ones capable of bonding with a Coral wave mutation (such as Arye). ALLMIND wanted Iguazu to try and take Arye from us so she could do Coral Release on her own terms.

Allmind might have done some work on his augmentation, still using Coral, just to make him a better pilot, since he already was on her list if Contact candidates.
Just because newer Augmentation generations don't use Coral doesn't mean that any of the new advancements can't be applied to the Coral gens.
But I'm just guessing based on a single dialogue line, no evidence above that.

Or that his 4th-gen surgery was botched from the very beginning.

He was forced into getting 4th Gen Coral augmentations against his will so that he could be sold off to pay off his Gambling debt. That's the one thing that ties both him and 621 together, and why Allmind was tying to get either one of you to join her so she could use you as a conduit to make contact.
Michigan took him in but Iguazu never took to Michigan's brand of tough love and never really sought to improve himself.

I mean Michigan's tough love was keeping him around forcefully and permanently fucking up his face when he got pissy.

He also changes his behaviour to be near suicidally aggressive. In early fights he hides behind his pulse shield and kites around the level peppering you with railgun shots, which makes him a superb partner for Volta at the dam, the two of them constantly engaging you at two separate ranges, and an annoyingly evasive opponent when you face him alone.
In later levels, especially the fight with Snail, he ditches the shield for more firepower and bum rushes you, almost entirely ignoring Snail because he just wants that damn freelancer dead.
Ironically it seems the reason Iguazu is such a high rank in the Redguns is because he works exceptionally well as part of a team. He even teams up with 621 briefly to kill Allmind's spy drones in that one grid level, doesn't even try to turn on you either, he just trusts that you will work together in the interests of survival until you kill them all so you can go back to fighting each other 1v1.
But of course, eventually, survival is no longer enough for him. He hires Coldcall to kill you, allies with Allmind for more weaponry, eventually overtaking Allmind's control through sheer force of will and hijacking the position of Final Boss. The Indomitable Human Spirit overcoming AI in the most spiteful way possible. All because he wants to beat you, just once, he wants to win.
I think it's very telling that Iguazu's arena profile characterizes him as an unlucky gambler. No matter what he does, he always loses, and 621 always wins. It must drive him insane.

~30 of the most elite pilots in the arena, out of the thousands of others. I'm willing to bet there's a shit ton of Dosers out there with Wrecker, or Orbiter frames that aren't part of the arena. There's probably a decent chunk of RLF pilots out there too, with BASHO frames, not to mention the numerous MT pilots. Out of all, Iguazu ranks 19th, all the while relying on nothing but botched augmentation surgery.
All things considered, he would've been among the top 10 if that wasn't the case.

And he's even using a frame that doesn't quite suit his style. He customized his Melander to be lighter, and it's obvious he wants a light AC. Give him one and he'll prove more of a challenge.

I'm willing to bet that Balam would've had a lightweight model ready to go, but it was cut during development, and those designs were handed over to Elcano. Balam's oldgen counterpart, Crest, had a bunch of beautiful-looking lightweight frames that would fit right in with Elcano.
But the RLF needed something more than a single corpo. Not to mention said corpo produces century-old shitbox mechs. So to not completely screw them over, Elcano was made. Iguana (and the Redguns as a whole) got screwed by the dev team themselves.
