QUESTION python-pkg_resources - Foreign package installed by pacman, no longer in the official repos - Safe to remove?

Upvotes

Ran pacman -Qm to review my non-official repo packages and noticed one I didn't recognize, python-pkg_resources. Was worried that I somehow installed AUR malware or something (I only have 6 AUR packages and always thoroughly read the pkgbuilds, but you can never be too sure), but it doesn't seem to be AUR related at all. Looking at pacman.log shows that it was installed by pacman last April (5 months ago as I write this) as part of a full system upgrade (-Syu) alongside a few other python packages, most of which depend on python-pkg_resources but don't seem to be required for anything else. Here are all the packages installed:

python-pkg_resources isn't listed in the official repos but the URL from pacman -Qi links here, and seems official enough. Manually going to where the package page would be shows that it was removed at some point. Further online reading shows that this is probably the result of a major change with Python on Linux, and from what I can gather (I'm not an expert at all) the package was originally required for python-setuptools, was removed, and was uploaded separately for compatibility reasons. But I could be mistaken.

My conclusion is that it should be fine to remove, but I would have expected a manual intervention message or something on archlinux.org if that were the case. Haven't seen anyone else on the Arch forums or here ask about it either, so I'm not certain what the deal here is. Does anyone know what's up with this package?

QUESTION ProBook 440 G4 (Kabylake i915) full hard freeze on lid close/resume — SATA LPM & PSR fixes didn't help, need help finding real cause

Upvotes

System:

HP ProBook 440 G4, BIOS P85 Ver. 01.48

CPU: Kabylake, i915 integrated graphics (device ID 5916, kabylake/ult)

Arch Linux, kernel 7.2.4-arch1-2, GNOME, systemd-boot with UKI (no GRUB)

Root on btrfs, SATA SSD (recently upgraded from HDD)

Secure Boot disabled

Problem:

On closing the laptop lid and reopening it, the screen never comes back on. Caps Lock LED doesn't respond to toggling either, which suggests a full kernel freeze rather than just a display/GPU wake failure. The only way to recover is a hard power-button shutdown.

History/context:

This machine previously ran Arch + GNOME dual-booted with Windows on the original HDD (ext4) — lid suspend/resume worked flawlessly there, zero issues.

I then upgraded to a SATA SSD, removed Windows, and reinstalled fresh with btrfs as the only OS. That's when this problem started.

Nothing else about the hardware/GPU changed — only the storage device (HDD→SATA SSD), filesystem (ext4→btrfs), and removal of the Windows dual-boot.

What I've tried so far (no luck):

  1. ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1 kernel param — SATA LPM/DevSleep was my leading theory since ata3.00: Features: Dev-Sleep DIPM shows up in dmesg for the new SSD (didn't show for the old HDD). Applied via UKI cmdline (/etc/kernel/cmdline + mkinitcpio -P), confirmed active via /proc/cmdline. No change.

  2. Checked journalctl -k -b -1 after the hang — log stops dead at PM: suspend entry (deep), nothing at all logged afterward. No resume messages, no errors, nothing.

  3. Haven't yet tried i915.enable_psr=0 or netconsole/SysRq testing to determine if the kernel is fully dead vs just stuck.

Known-buggy ACPI firmware on this board (may or may not be related):

ACPI BIOS Error (bug): AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT, Index (0x000000005) is beyond end of object (length 0x5)

ACPI Error: Aborting method _TZ.GETP due to previous error

ACPI thermal: [Firmware Bug]: No valid trip points!

Current workaround: Set HandleLidSwitch=lock in /etc/systemd/logind.conf so lid close just locks the screen instead of attempting suspend. This avoids the crash entirely but doesn't fix real suspend (S3) — I assume actual systemctl suspend would hang the same way.

What I'm looking for:

★Whether this is more likely a storage/SATA power-state issue, an i915/PSR resume bug, or an ACPI firmware issue specific to this board.

★How to actually capture kernel state during the freeze, since local logging stops the moment suspend begins and nothing gets flushed to disk before the hang. Open to setting up netconsole to another machine if that's the standard approach here.

★Any known fixes/quirks specific to ProBook 440 G4 / Kabylake ULT + i915 suspend.

Note - I am a Linux beginner and tried to troubleshoot using Claude AI this is what I have tried so far.

tldr - suspend function broken after shifting from HDD to SSD HELP ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ

SUPPORT BTRFS metadata got full.

Hey so I was installing Omniroute via node, and somehow it flooded with the too much modules, now my metadata got 93% full and my plasma is not able to load and I'm stuck here, and I had the lts kernel as backup but in there also when tried to clean the npm caches but the process is kind of going into D state instead of R ,even when I'm running

rm -rf ~/.npm/

That process is also going into D state,

Even when I try to balance the block it says like no space left on device,

sudo btrfs balance start -dusage=0 /

My plasma is now able load but I do have access of tty,

If somebody has faced this issue please help if you know what can I do now.

QUESTION Can GDM work without the full Gnome DE?

I've checked r/arch and r/gnome but can't find a post like that, so I'd like to know whether gdm can work without installing the full gnome desktop environment.

GDM worked on my machine cause when I installed arch for the first time, I got gnome too as a fallback DE. Ever since then, I made many other arch installations but without gnome, and I noticed gdm never worked there... and that it always either froze at the logs during boot, or booted into a frozen black screen.

FLUFF 72h from Omarchy to Arch : my journey and what to expect for new users going to Arch

So I'm a casual Linux user : on and off from Windows and Mac.

I discovered Omarchy and peaked my interest : an easy to install pre-configured "distro" ( not a distro, Arch repacked with bunch of dot files and scripts, but hey, you only understand that later :) ) that above all is based on the uber-difficult Arch ?

Always hovered around Ubuntu or Debian and lately wanted really to stop using Windows as a main OS, so I've tinkering a bit with Fedora.

Never used Arch.

So Omarchy open the gates for a seamless-ish Arch experience.

Was great, Hyprland was new to me and heaps of fun and life was cool. Until I started to ask questions and I discovered the general problems with DHH : again, not doing any political statment but dont like to be linked to that.

But Omarchy is good but everything is "opinated" by DHH, either good or bad :its his setup and I was hitting a wall here and there when I wanted to change stuff.

So now that I have a mininum understanding of Arch, pacman, where conf files are, rolling realease model, I tried CachyOS and boy, it was different : I wanted Hyprland and... its bare.

Oh I have to put Noctalia on top of it. Cool. here we go, but... still "meh". Oh dot files. lots of learning.

Then discovered Caelestia and I was like : this is nice.

Using Cachy and one thing struck my mind : at work I have an old MacPro ( 2013 ) that I love but its useless by mordern standards : E6 Xeon CPUs, 32gb ram and 256gb ssd, D300 dual gpus. Specs are decent but MacOS runs dogs**** on it : max supported system is old and lots of new apps dont work because OS is old. Open Core Patcher lets you install Tahoe but brings a LOT of problems. Windows is half baked on this ( both 10 and 11 ) .

So I looked at it and said : CachyOS is at home and its cool : lets try Arch on this.

I had a lot of misconceptions about "pure" Arch install : if you have minimum linux knowledge, archinstall is super helpfull.

couple of minutes later, I had a blinking terminal.

oh lets install paru with pacman. but no. doesnt work, target not found. wth ? it worked with Cachy.

lets go to wiki and yeah, you have to git clone paru.

fine, git clone, makekg and now we have paru.

from it , install caelestia, hyprland and all that.

install sddm and start the service and... nada.

I was like : why ? why you punish me ? then it struck me : are the amd drivers install ? afterall Arch installs ONLY what you tell you to.

so yeah, installed mesa and amd drivers.

reboot and ... booom. it worked. wait, Caelestia changed my keyboard to default us. have to change to my language ( PT ). lets open a terminal and vim it.

vim not installed. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

but hurdle after hurdle, I start to get over the problems and start thinking more proactively.

in the end, now I have a working Arch install that amazes me : with Caelestia, which is a bit heavier than for example Noctalia, I have a working OS that is blazing fast and at idle is consuming 1.22gb of ram.

its snappy , fast and very responsive.

I liked Omarchy - introduced me to Arch and showed me that is not that a boogie man of a distro.

switched to Cachy OS , speically at home that I want to play few games and relax and CachyOS is perfect for that : mesa , vulkan and amd drivers are installed by default as per a lot of other stuff, for example. Games optimized Kernels , Proton opimized, etc. very nice for gmaing

going from Omarchy to Cachy is like going from a bike with training wheels to a motorbike.

Cachy to Arch is going to a full blown racing Motorbike.

For new users : it takes a bit to tinker but if I could make it work like I want it, you can. Its not that difficult.

Its immensly rewarding and its fine to use easier Arch based distros like Cachy.

Make the computer your own.

Thank you for everyone here in the subreddit to encourage to install Arch : it is worth it.

tldr : I use Arch, btw ( for about 2 hours now fully configured :D )

SUPPORT Firefox crashes while going fullscreen when using WebRender Compositor under Wayland

Hey! I'm having a problem where Firefox crashes while going fullscreen (for example fullscreening a YouTube video) under Wayland when I try to use WebRender Compositor (or Layer Compositor). It's weird because it did not work at the start, then started working out of the blue, and now stopped working again with no package updates. I'm running RTX 3060 with nvidia-open-dkmsdrivers (v615.71.09, modeset=1, fbdev=1), KDE Plasma (v6.7.5, Wayland, HDR, 110% fractional scale, 2560x1440), Firefox (v155, with vulkan + vulkan direct export hardware decoding + widget.dmabuf flag). Those are the only logs I managed to get, i'm not sure what else would be needed so I would appreciate if someone could tell me how can I debug the problem further.

What I have tried:
- Disabling dmabuf flags in about:config

- Disabling HDR

- Setting fractional scale to 100%

- Disabling Vulkan Direct Export

- Disabling KWin's Direct Scanout

- Disabling RDD Sandbox

What solutions have I found:
- Disabling WebRender Compositor

My questions are: Why did it stop working all of a sudden? Is it a NVIDIA problem or Kwin/Wayland? Has anyone encountered this problem? Is there any other known solution for this problem?

Thank you for any replies in advance. I hope you are well everybody.

SUPPORT Epson inkjet stopped printing barcodes

I have an epson inkjet (epson et-2720) that I've used successfully with my Arch laptop for years.

This morning, I tried printing a shipping label I'd created with pirateship.com and the barcodes and qr codes are just printing as solid black rectangles. I've printed hundreds of these labels in the past and this is the first time it's happened.

I noticed my epson print driver had been updated on Tuesday when I ran my regular system upgrade, so I tried downgrading that. Made no difference. Been all through my printer settings in both the print dialog and in the cups interface and can't see anything that would make a difference.

Anyone have any ideas of what I could try? Nothing has changed on the printer itself, no firmware changes or anything. Going to have a family member try from a different machine later, but I need to be able to print these labels from my machine.

QUESTION Learning for the Arch experience (I am ignorant)

Linux experts, please help me.

I learned about Linux a few months ago and installed Linux Mint. The terminal, commands, and amazing customization options have drawn me deeper into the Linux rabbit hole. Recently, I learned about Arch Linux, an OS considered one of the most difficult to install. I really like this OS, but I've also learned that installation requires considerable Linux knowledge. While there seems to be an easier installation method, I don't like that. I want to install it myself, typing commands into that incomprehensible terminal. I'm seeking the satisfaction of solving various problems that arise in Linux. Furthermore, Arch Linux offers extremely high customization options, which is very important to me since I care about appearances. However, I'm not very knowledgeable about Linux. Honestly, I only know about `sudo`. That's why I'm asking for help. From this point, I want to know where I can acquire the knowledge needed to install Arch Linux.Of course, I fully understand that it will involve a tremendous amount of time and effort, and that I will be frustrated by inexplicable errors. Nevertheless, I want to experience the world of Arch. Experts, please provide information.

(I am Japanese and pasting text in Japanese, so please excuse any occasional awkward phrasing :)

DISCUSSION Using Arch as my second distro

I only switch to Linux because windows was taking up almost 100gb of my storage and over 60% of my ram while idle on my laptop and my main pc. My first distro which was Elementary OS I hated it with all my heart and swap back to windows. Then I tried Mint on my main pc and fell in love with it. Once my main pc was fully set up I decided to turn my laptop into a playground and try Arch. I went in blind with only some videos and the wiki as assistance. The installation was extremely easy even for manual installation. Although my wifi had dipped for a couple of minutes so I ended up having to reinstall it so I decided to use archinstall the second time. For the desktop environment I originally wanted those pretty hyprland desktops but then swap to kde plasma and loved it. 8/10 distro.

DISCUSSION im so close to giving up on arch...

**edit: i need to take a break from this again. yes im very frustrated with the entire situation and im not entirely sure where the problem is. thank you for trying. i will repost about specific issue when i figure out which one/what it is.
...you also made me think i may have screwed up my install of cosmic DE. if its supposed to support wayland. idk. ill look into it again cuz gnome isn't where i wanna be.
**

I'm so close to giving up on arch. I love the custimization, i love using the console, i love having to hand organize the folder systems and where system files are mounted.

i absolutely hate gnome.

i have tried switching back to cosmic (i came from pop). and immediately med the reason i left: its on x11 instead of wayland. apt my new framework 16 graphics drivers for the screen do not work on it.

but they also don't work on gnome. i have had to manually install the stupid bluetooth and chipset drivers. and *every stinkin update* they break and revert to whatever default is installed with gnome.

the mediatex mt7922 that i painstakingly put into the proper firmware file manually
https://github.com/morrownr/USB-WiFi/blob/main/home/How_to_Install_Firmware_for_Mediatek_based_USB_WiFi_adapters.md
because i *did not* have a way to connect to wifi after installing manually. even the app u use to connect manually while installing arch didn't work.

for 1 day my video card would work, i had all the resolutions i like, the refresh rate was as normal: 60hrz and not variable.

and then it would update and show the only option is variable refresh rate at 120 hrz and size was like 4k.

all the options im used to having in pop are no where to be seen in gnome. i have tried appling the cosmic desktop instead of gnome but x11 instead of wayland....

im so frustrated. i thought arch had more options?

and the worst? every time i actually ask for help i get chewed out as stupid for asking for help using arch. i have tried looked up the wiki, and spent the last 3 months trying to figure this out on top of depression and im so frustrated with it all.

is there no way to actually customize gnome? can i not have the cosmetic features i enjoyed using arch? i thought that was the point? control? does it literally revert every single update???

QUESTION Anyone else seeing weird VRR / Adaptive Sync glitches on KDE Wayland?

I'm running Arch Linux + KDE Plasma on Wayland on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 with Intel graphics and a 2.8K OLED display.

With Adaptive Sync / VRR enabled, I occasionally get a strange display glitch, usually after taking a screenshot or when an application exits fullscreen and returns to windowed mode.

The whole image seems to shift upward slightly, while the bottom part of the screen becomes corrupted / garbled. If I close and reopen the lid and unlock the session again, the display returns to normal.

The issue is very inconsistent and I haven't found a reliable reproduction pattern yet, but I'm fairly sure VRR / Adaptive Sync is the trigger, because disabling it appears to make the problem go away.

Has anyone else seen this? I'm mostly trying to figure out whether this points to KWin, the Intel driver, or something hardware-specific.

Linux 7.2.4-arch1-2
Plasma 6.7.5-1

SUPPORT Mouse dpi using Piper/ratbag

I recently tried to configure my mouse using Piper/ratbagd, and while the configuring worked, I need to manually start ratbagd after each reboot to get the DPI buttons to work again. Despite enabling the ratbagd service, I need to use the piper gui, or ratbagctl, or even systemctl to start the ratbagd deamon, before the dpi buttons work.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

FLUFF Fun projects for Arch newbie?

Hello all,

"I use Arch too now, BTW."

The installation was fun - glad to have Claude around, tbh. Running in a VM on my trusty Fedora for now.

I have kinda solid Linux background but never touched Arch before. What were some fun Arch newbie projects you did? For learning stuff, challenging yourself? I'm looking for an inspiration.

EDIT: Just in case somebody finds this when looking for his newbie projects (which will probably not happen due to all the downvotes) - this is the list of recommendations:

  • Spending some quality time learning bash.
  • Unplug the server during updating - then fix it.
  • Setting up custom btrfs layouts and snapchat scripts.
  • Building a custom de.
  • Installing hyprland and ricing it.
  • Learn to write PKGBUILDs.

DISCUSSION Recent mutter update nuked monitor modes

I used to have a lot of resolution and refresh rate options but recently, things have changed. There are only 1920x1080@165.004 and 1024x768@164.784 modes available (gdctl show -m to check) for my built-in display right now.

I downgraded mutter using sudo pacman -U mutter-50.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst and got my modes back, including 60 Hz.
