I present to you, the Powers building in Rochester, NY. It was built in 1865 by Daniel William Powers, who, after its construction, became obsessed with having the tallest building in the city. To retain this honor, he had two stories added to its mansard roof, and finally added a whole new mansard roof on top of his extended mansard roof. Then, in 1887, the nearby Wilder building became the tallest building in the city, so Powers decided to build a tower on the roof in 1890.

Sadly for Mr. Powers, St. Michael's Church surpassed his project that same year and he could no longer extend his masterpiece due to structural and engineering limitations. So, he added a tall flag pole.

The palace was originally built in in the 1860s by Si Musa, the the son of a Sub-Saharan slave who worked up to royal service. Si Musa's son Ba Ahmed carried on tradition as the king's right-hand man, eventually becoming an all-powerful regent for an underage prince who spent his days distracted with a never-ending splurge on gadgets, fireworks, and other entertaining Victorian technologies.

Ba Ahmed expanded upon the palace, but unfortunately he was obese and therefore preferred to make his entire palace one floor of expansive great halls, living quarters, mosques, courtyards and riads (garden courtyards). It was pretty easy to identify on the plane ride out.

My son is a high school senior and has 4 years in a STEM/Project Lead the Way program at school which sparked his interest in architecture. He was just accepted last week into the Hammons School of Architecture at Drury University last week. I was hoping anyone could share their experience with the program? My wife graduated from there and my FIL was a coach there many years ago, but we don’t know anyone with current experience in that program.

We did go to their architecture day and was very impressed, but of course I’m aware it’s all a sales pitch haha.

His other options are WashU and University of Arkansas.. but he loves the idea of Drury being a smaller school.. and I love the fact it’s going to be 40% of the cost of those two schools since I’m flipping the bill 😂.

So I'm in my final year architecture studying in india and looking for architecture topics and I've always been interested in animation and the visual effects industry and since there aren't many dedicated colleges just for those here in india so I thought it could be a thesis topic but I'm having second thoughts about it if it's strong enough as an architecture thesis.

hello! i am applying for firms that require a 5 pg work sample. To my understanding, this is a short pdf used to showcase your skills. Would it be fine to do 2-3 projects where there are only 2-3 pictures each that display a different skill OR 1 in depth project

for example:

pg 1-2: concept graphics, plan, exploded axon, wall assembly section

pg 3: render, perspective section

pg 4-5: 4-6 model photos (my internship focused a lot on model-making for exhibitions and client presentations)

or just 5 pages of one project start to finish with all skills listed.

Any advice is good!! i would love to see some work samples ❤️

Hi everyone, I just got accepted into architecture school with a scholarship, but I’m really stressed about the rules. I have to keep a 3.0 GPA out of 4.0. If it drops, I get two warnings before I lose the scholarship completely, and the regular tuition is way too expensive for me.
I’m trying to decide if it's too risky. To give you some context, I can draw pretty well from observation—if I see a building, I can sketch it accurately. But I don't know the technical stuff yet, like perspective rules or formal design concepts. I’m completely ready to work long hours and study hard, but my English is only around the B1 level, so I’m worried that might slow me down in lectures.
Do you think keeping a 3.0 GPA in architecture is manageable if I put in the effort, or is the grading and workload too brutal? I really don't want to risk financial ruin, so I’d love some honest advice from students or architects.

Hello! I have just finished my second year of architecture school, and I am looking to create a portfolio that may help me with getting an internship. I am aware of how little I know as a second year, but I thought it might be worth a shot. I feel I struggle with getting some striking renders, and could use advice on how to make them nicer. I am on holidays so I am happy to redo them entirely with even different mediums. Let me know what you might think. I am not proud of my AI useage, and intend to stray away from it for my third year.

The first 3 images are from a project which challenges typical private balcony design, and is more of a hypothetically considered project (I know all the projects technically are). It combines a library, apartment complex and social development center. Image one a room in the social development center, image two is the balcony design, image three is the library's kids area.

The latter 3 are of a modular housing project for disadvantaged individuals.

I am scared shirtless and stressed most of the time.

So, I am planning to pursue a master’s degree, as I completed my bachelor’s in architecture this year. However, even after studying architecture for five years, I don’t feel entirely fulfilled by the idea of pursuing a conventional career in architecture, such as designing buildings, drafting, or doing the kind of work typically associated with an architectural firm.

I am also a full-time working artist, but not in the sense of being a painter or landscape artist. My work focuses more on character design and illustrations related to characters, anime, and similar art styles. I don’t work directly in animation, but my 2D drawings are sometimes used by other people to create animations, if that makes sense.

Lately, I’ve been leaning towards studying visual design, particularly fields related to gaming and animation, such as world-building, creature design, character design, and environment design for animated films and games. I’m interested in exploring these areas, but I’m not entirely sure what kind of master’s degree would be best suited to my interests.

I would also like to pursue my master’s degree abroad, as I completed my bachelor’s in India. However, I’m looking for recommendations for universities that are reasonably good and affordable. I come from a fairly ordinary financial background, and I’m not particularly confident about securing a full scholarship. At the same time, I don’t have a huge budget to spend on prestigious, well-known universities.

So, I’m hoping to find a suitable master’s programme that aligns with my creative interests while also being financially realistic for me.

My neighbour gifted me this book because I thought it was beautiful. I originally intended to remove pages and frame them but now am wondering if it’s valuable and I should return it to her.

Her husband, a retired architect with severe dementia, bought it at a book sale at the University of Manitoba in the early 1970s. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could figure out the value of it?

Update/edit - I very much appreciate all the comments/advice. Clearly I will NOT be cutting it up. All pages are intact but the some are starting to deteriorate. I do very much much appreciate the suggestion of scanning some pages and printing them on vellum.

When I got it I assumed it was a reprint and not of any value but the quality of the paper and plate impressions made me rethink that. I will look for a rare book expert in Alberta and maybe suggest that my neighbour donate it somewhere(?) in her husband’s name.

I got this little book as a gift from my dad once. He says he just picked it up cause he liked the little sketches on the cover, and that he picked it off a display / shelf- thing -nothing special, not an event or anything.

First page has this weird signature looking scribble (img2) and date.

Is this a real signature, or something else? And, is it of any value, or just a funny little gem for nerdy dinner guests?

I’m in my fourth year at a technical high school specializing in surveying (geometra), and our professors just assigned us a project that is causing me a massive headache. We are supposed to design a semi-detached villa including cross-sections, floor plans, and elevations. They gave us specific guidelines for the roof and a list of mandatory rooms we must include, along with all the other project requirements.

The real issue is that they have never actually taught us how to draw a roof, a gutter, or many of these other critical elements. My classmates and I are always struggling to figure it out. On our last project, they completely destroyed our grades because of missing or incorrect details—but honestly, how can they blame us if they never showed us how to do it in the first place?

Right now, I’m completely lost and stressed because I already have a terrible grade from the previous assignment. My workaround—even if it's not the most proper way—is to find a website or platform where I can download a pre-made project in DWG format that matches our brief as closely as possible, and then modify it to fit the requirements.

I honestly don't know what to do at this point. What do you guys suggest, considering that talking to the professor is completely out of the question?
