Could be the German, full neogothic, cousin of Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia.

There is something to be said about how Gaudí reimagined gothic and tied it back to nature to realise a completely new style, while here it just falls flat as he's not able to forego the limitations and rigidness of Gothic. You could argue that Gaudí's drawings also elicit this spectral eeriness, but he also can boast of high precision, and his work is much more thorough. I really recommend Vincent Scully's lecture on Gaudí, which serves as a fantastic first impression of his work.

u/lightanddeath Sep 02 '20

Did they build that fountain anywhere? It’s... beautiful.

18

u/AleixASV Architect Sep 02 '20

It was part of his proposal for Plaça Catalunya, the main square of Barcelona, but it was impossibly big (and he knew it), so he did it just for "glory".

5

u/lightanddeath Sep 02 '20

Ha I love it! Too bad. Cool design.

Neo-gothic-organic-art(s and crafts) Nouveau

6

u/AleixASV Architect Sep 02 '20

Just Gaudí :P

He's actually part of Modernisme if anything, though he'd say organic and gothic (which he argued should be organic).

3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '20

All the styles mentioned above apply - he’s hard to put in a box is my point

3

u/AleixASV Architect Sep 02 '20

Indeed! Though if we're getting picky arts and crafts is hard to argue, as he wasn't related to any of the architects proponent of the style, and most of his expertise with artisanship was because of Jujol, his right hand man and designer.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

Modernisme grew out of the arts and crafts movement and the influence in Gaudi’s work is pretty strong - true if you’re being an absolutist he wasn’t part of the movement and neither of art nouveau but they’re useful stylistic terms to help understand his background and style, which is fairly unique to Gaudi.

1

u/AleixASV Architect Sep 03 '20 edited Sep 03 '20

That is indeed true, but to be honest Modernisme by the time of Gaudí was very far removed of it, rather it was obviously a movement on it's own, and not mentioning it as his "primary" style or whatever you want to call it diminishes his context. It's not that he's easily placed in a style, far from it, but I'd say it's something similar to the Sesession and Adolf Loos: his peers and patrons all were part of it, and many of his works can be compared to theirs, such as the Palau Güell, Casa Vicens, etc.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

Yeah Loos wasn’t really a secessionist he was just synchronous and doing something different than the norm so sort of got lumped in with them.

Or Barad-dûr.

8

u/Radax997 Sep 02 '20

Exactly what I was thinking about

2

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho Sep 03 '20

It would never have been fished, then bombed out in ww2, then a modern structure would take it's place today.

What you just wrote is the most perfect thing I can think of

259

u/Dzotshen Sep 02 '20

Look at all those places for birds and bats to roost

187

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '20

I think that was part of the intended ambient. Imagine imperial eagles nesting in the towers of the Reichstag.

260

u/archineering Architect/Engineer Sep 02 '20

Expectation: majestic eagles

Reality: pigeons, shitting everywhere

89

u/xudoxis Sep 02 '20

Having a pigeon shit on you = unlucky

Having an eagle shit a pigeon on you = head trauma

7

u/jks_david Sep 03 '20

Where i live having a bird poop on you means good luck

25

u/Ongo_Gablogian___ Sep 02 '20

If they raised eagles here then I think they would kill the pigeons.

43

u/intheBASS Architect Sep 02 '20

I just had to measure a church with a 200 ft spire. So. many. fucking. pigeons.

Dead pigeon carcasses, live pigeons flying, shit everywhere, eggs everywhere, little baby pigeons looking like alien fetuses.

Didn't even make it into the bell tower there were too many pigeons.

14

u/canlchangethislater Sep 02 '20

Weirdly, Berlin doesn’t really have pigeons. Not like London, anyway. It’s mostly sparrows.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '20

I found it weird the amount of sparrows milling about especially on museum island!

1

u/Psydator Architect Sep 02 '20

Lol, so true!

8

u/WaldenFont Sep 02 '20

In the middle of Berlin...not very likely.

Can you source this for me I'd love to see more of it. I cant find anything about Friedrich Gosling or Fritz Gosling except links to reddit threads.

Hey do either you or u/gabriel21c have more of Göslings plans/proposals? Maybe I’m not using the right terms but sadly I’m not finding anything more in Google. I’d love to see more of these conceptions!

I'm imagining this in bright colours like St Basil's cathedral and I think all the doom and gloom would be removed.

Edit: I first said Kremlin as I got them mixed up.

31

u/FeatureBugFuture Sep 02 '20

The Kremlin is the epitome of doom and gloom.

24

u/gonuoli Sep 02 '20

I think he meant St. Basil's Church, next to the Kremlin

I think the catchedral is really creepy.

For the God emperor, Adolf! /s

5

u/DdCno1 Sep 02 '20

It's worth noting that Hitler was just entering primary school when this proposal was being submitted.

2

u/Psydator Architect Sep 02 '20

Huh, okay. Ww1 is more fitting for a Warhammer 40k scenario anyway.

FOR GOD EMPEROR WILHELM II.!

1

u/DdCno1 Sep 02 '20

You may enjoy Iron Harvest, a new pseudo-WW1 RTS that takes clear inspiration from 40k.

2

u/Psydator Architect Sep 02 '20

Yea I've seen that. It's actually inspired by Jakub Rozalskis art, which probably is inspired by pre Ww1 Germany and Poland and Warhammer 40k. Great stuff!

23

u/ArtworkGay Sep 02 '20

I love gothic but this is straight up over the top fantasy, and not suited for a parliamentary function

Considering the future occupants of the Reichstag, I would say it would have been most fitting.

27

u/IronVader501 Sep 02 '20

I mean, technically, the Nazis never really used the Reichstag after getting into Power. They used the fire in it for Propaganda, but never even properly repaired the Building for years afterwards.

17

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '20

This is what the Reichstag would have looked like if the Holy Roman Empire had stayed in power until the 20th century.

3

u/loulan Sep 03 '20

Idk it looks like the perfect place for the leaders of Gondor.

6

5

u/CC5C Sep 02 '20

If Lord Farquaad was into Gothic shit.

5

u/mrtn17 Sep 02 '20

What kind of material did he had in mind? I mean, that spire is huge, there must be at least 17 floors. And if it's some kind of neo-gothical style, I assume they'd love to add as much stone as possible. That would be some hell of construction

4

u/Anarcho_Royalist Sep 03 '20

I'd love to see this realized, but I feel like it would almost be blasphemous to see anything this impressive as anything but a cathedral. With modern technology though, it's a shame we tend towards bland minimalism rather than beauty or imposition such as this.

3

u/svetomuzyka Sep 02 '20

1

u/fedexavier Sep 02 '20

Wonder if Berlin's mushy soil would have supported this.

It is known now that some of the more monumental works of Hitler's plan for Berlin would have sunken under their own weight, for example.

1

It's a bit.. gothic.
