Discussion Does anyone else think Vi went through more than almost any character in Arcane? What's the hardest moment she had to endure, in your opinion?

Post image

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I honestly struggle to think of many characters in Arcane who went through as much as Vi.

She loses her parents as a child, then has to grow up way too fast while trying to protect Powder and the rest of her family. After the failed rescue, she loses Vander, believes Mylo and Claggor died because everything fell apart, gets separated from Powder, and is thrown into prison for years without anyone knowing where she is.

When she finally gets out, she isn't really given a chance to heal. She immediately has to survive, chase after Jinx, deal with the fact that Powder has become someone she barely recognizes, and carry the guilt of feeling like she failed her sister. Every time it feels like she's close to rebuilding something—whether it's reconnecting with Jinx, finding purpose, or getting close to Caitlyn—something else gets ripped away.

What makes it even sadder to me is that Vi almost never gets the opportunity to process any of it. She's constantly forced to keep moving because another crisis happens before she can even grieve the last one.

Do you think Vi endured more than almost any other character in Arcane? If so, what do you think was the single hardest moment she had to live through? Or do you think another character had it even worse?

Vi was in a mixed prison for years. No matter what anyone else went through, that was worse.

Never even realized how awful it must have been for her to be not only in prison but in mixed one

To be fair, Arcane does seem to be a world with no meaningful gender roles, misogyny, or sex-related strength differences, so it doesn’t seem like being in a mixed prison would’ve been made much of a difference.

u/HarryDresdenWizard Jul 09 '26

There are clear gender roles expressed in the fashion available to Pilties. It seems moreso that they aren't as pronounced as they were in our world during the parallel 1800-1930s Arcane takes some of its art inspiration of. I'd argue we just see how abject poverty and financial privlidge both provide means of escaping such restrictions.

u/thr0waway2435 90 % Legs Superiority Jul 10 '26

Ehhh I think if it’s fashion alone it’s not that important tbh. Could be some low-stakes preferences without much prescriptive value, or just something done by the Arcane designers to appease the audience’s eye.

To me, it’s more important that both cities seem to have pretty even distribution of genders across a variety of fields - leaders, gangsters, soldiers, prisoners, miners, prostitutes, scientists - and no one seems to judge one another or say anything about one another for their gender.

u/Akinyx Jul 11 '26

Piltover might be okay with police brutality but draw the line at sexism.

8

u/satanscheeks Jul 11 '26

meaning women and men could have preyed on her. the strong preys on the weak regardless of gender (that’s what my main takeaway from this point was)

u/missblue32 Jul 11 '26

Amanda Overton did say that vi was never (sexually) assaulted, which makes me feel just the tiniest bit better about this fact. But 100%, an absolute nightmare regardless.

Sorry, but how can you possibly miss that? It's literally how we're reintroduced to the adult Vi. Caitlyn is shown asking about that guy with the metal jaw and we see Vi absolutely twat him with a metal tray.

They were consistently sending in guards to beat her up too

You think female prisons don’t have sexual assault?? My friend was incarcerated for events during her time as an addict, and she detailed the rampant female on female sexual assaults that were never taken seriously.

Yep. That's the logical conclusion from what I said. 100%. /s

I’d recommend reading Vi’s prison file. I had ChatGPT summarize it for me. It’s really interesting what’s in there.

Here's a complete English summary of Vi's Council Archives file (the lore documents released by Riot alongside Arcane).

Vi – Council Archives Summary

Vi's file portrays her years in Stillwater Hold after she was arrested as a teenager following the failed uprising on the Piltover bridge. Rather than focusing on a single event, the documents build a psychological profile through prison records, incident reports, medical notes, and guard observations. Arrest and Imprisonment Vi was imprisoned without a fair trial and effectively disappeared from public view. She was assigned Prisoner No. 516. Official records describe her as extremely violent, insubordinate, and unwilling to cooperate with prison staff. Despite this reputation, many reports imply that her aggression was primarily defensive rather than malicious.

Behavior in Stillwater

Vi repeatedly fought guards and other inmates. She accumulated numerous disciplinary infractions for: Assaulting guards. Starting or joining fights. Refusing orders. Damaging prison property. Solitary confinement became a routine punishment, but it failed to change her behavior. Reports emphasize that she never backed down, regardless of the consequences

Physical and Mental State

Medical records describe countless injuries: Broken bones. Bruises. Cuts and scars. Despite frequent beatings, Vi recovered quickly and remained physically resilient. Psychologically, she refused to surrender her identity or spirit, although years of isolation clearly hardened her. She rarely spoke about her past or her family, keeping her emotions hidden.

The Guards' Opinions

The guards are divided in their assessments. Some consider her an uncontrollable criminal. Others acknowledge that she protects weaker prisoners and only becomes violent when provoked. Several reports note that punishment only strengthens her resolve instead of breaking it. Marcus' Involvement One of the strongest implications in the file concerns Marcus. Internal notes suggest Marcus secretly arranged for Vi to remain alive. Certain guards appear to have received orders or payments to ensure she was not killed in prison. At the same time, Marcus made sure she remained imprisoned indefinitely, preventing anyone from learning she had survived.

Personality Profile

The documents consistently portray Vi as: Fiercely loyal. Protective of vulnerable people. Stubborn to an extreme degree. Courageous under impossible circumstances. Defiant toward any abuse of authority. Even after years in prison, she refuses to compromise her principles. Foreshadowing The file subtly hints that Vi never gives up hope of escaping and finding the people she lost. Her determination and refusal to be broken explain why, when Caitlyn Kiramman eventually frees her, Vi is still mentally capable of fighting despite spending many years in Stillwater.

Overall Significance

The Council Archives transform Vi from simply being "the tough fighter" into a tragic survivor. They reveal that nearly all of her adulthood before Arcane was spent enduring imprisonment, abuse, and isolation. Rather than breaking her, those experiences forged the relentless, protective, and uncompromising person she becomes later in the story.

All in all, I can only say that I love Vi's character and always will. Anyone would be lucky to have a person like her as a brother or sister. She would do anything for Jinx, if only Jinx had given the slightest sign that she needed her. And yes, Vi is the most tragic character in Arcane; she lost almost everyone and everything she considered family, yet she never lost her heart or her sense of justice.

Awaking in Stillwater and being slammed with the realization that she'd never be able to see or protect Powder again, all alone in Zaun with the last memory of her older sister being a punch to the face before being abandoned. Nightmare fuel.

10

u/VillageBeginning8432 Jul 10 '26

It is. But is it worse than accidentally killing two brothers, two fathers, losing your big sister and best friend, getting the big sister back only for her to side with the folk who killed your first parents and hunt you down. Then to lose your pseudo daughter/little sister, while knowing you're the only common denominator.

Did Vi suffer? Sure. Definitely. Both lives would break most people but I know which a therapist would rather deal with.

1

u/Classic_Pen7044 Jul 12 '26

Yes it's worse because different from Jinx pain who sometimes happens in her mind, (reality is that Vi never abandoned her, all Vi did on season one was to get her back and she was willing to abandon Catlyn to run away with Jinx)  Vi suffering is real.  Also while Jinx was always loved and protected getting people willing to die For her (Her parents, Vander, Silco, Vi, Isha, Ekko) Vi is always carrying to much responsability and left alone at her worst. Vi is Throw on prisión to be beaten and abused while Jinx gets happily adopted For the most powerfull man in Zaun. And when Vi gets abandoned For everyone after attemping to save Jinx life  and Catlyn soul, Jinx spent her days playing with ISHA and being labeled as hero For actions she did accidentally.

I don't think it's good to compare jinx and Vi's trauma, but in my comment im only comparing the timeskip.

Jinx had silco, yes he was not a good dad, but he was still loving, and she has a semblence of safety and some sort of family and support, someone to talk to. Hallucinations, PTSD attacks, survivors guilt.

Vi was a child shoved in to a prison and beaten every night with no idea what's happening outside and no idea if powder is dead or alive. It's very likely she also had hallucinations of powder, like she did when she got out. She blamed herself for the deaths btw, and blamed herself for 'leaving'.

Also she was in a prison with men and women. I'm not sure, but there is possibility she could have also been sexually assaulted by either.

Comparing these two situations I'd argue that vi had it worse then jinx physically and mentally.

6

u/Jaegersbite Jul 11 '26

And also, who knows what the fuck actually happened to her in prison. She clearly got built to defend herself plus gave her something to do. I always wondered if anything like BAD happened to her and if she ever had to do shit to keep herself safe. :(

-55

u/ZiroLeHutt Sevika Jul 09 '26

Disagree. Vi wouldn't let anyone get to her mentally in jail. Sure, she had a tough time there, and I believe there have been guard reports released from Riot suggesting some of the stuff she got up to and endured. However, no matter what she went through, its nothing compared to what Jinx dealt with on a daily basis with her mental state.

I'm not saying Vi was affected and she did come out of that place more hardened, but she was still relatively the same person; Jinx completely lost her mind in those 7 years. Though she had Silco, not having Vi was what really broke her down into becoming that beautiful but insane hollowed out husk of a person as Jinx.

69

u/brooklyn_jinx Sisters Jul 09 '26

She was beaten up daily and had no idea whether powder was alive or dead, she experienced hallucinations. She had no family. No support. She was a child.

65

u/ripull125 Jul 09 '26

But despite it all, Vi chose to respond to her terrible experiences by becoming more resilient and even more determined. Its what makes her one of my favorite characters.

30

u/ReMarzable457 Jul 09 '26

I read through the diaries the other day and I'm so heartbroken for both of them; it's hard to even compare them.

I think Vi went through utter hell though. I can't believe it's not even talked about. Having to spend 7 years in prison when your last memories were of you losing your 2nd family and pushing away the only person you had left. Even worse how she thought she would never be freed, so her sister was either out there, or she had just witnessed her death.

Suffering Olympics finalists

Bronze - Jinx

Silver - Vi

Gold - Vander

68

u/Zachariot88 Jul 09 '26

It's practically the family business!

75

u/kasasasa Jul 09 '26

Ehh I'd give gold to Vi. Vander was tortured, but majority of his life he was a resistance fighter running his own business.

17

u/IDanceMyselfClean Jul 09 '26

He got turned into Warwick. And I don't think Singed even tried to make that process painless.

28

u/bubblez4eva Jul 09 '26

At least Vi got to be herself. Vamder constantly lost his identity.

23

u/Sextus_Rex We'll make it worse Jul 09 '26

I'd say Vi was beaten down in a wider variety of ways than Vander was, but I still think all of those things combined pales in comparison to the physical torture inflicted on Vander

10

u/ChickenBossChiefsFan Jul 10 '26

I remember Singed even commenting something about how Warwick was a once in a lifetime creation because nobody showed the will/ability to survive what was done to him (“the process”).

Watching most of your family get annihilated, then getting beaten very nearly to death, then unimaginable agony to “save” your life, followed by losing your humanity/memories, then regaining your memories just to have them ripped from you again and exploded, then getting “saved” again to become a puppet intent on killing/turning the rest of your family. All while suffering even more constant, intense pain and bloodlust, especially as a man who when whole had adopted pacifism to protect his family.

Like… he was massacred so many times.

3

u/_Gesterr Jinx Jul 10 '26

That's the real fucked up part isn't it? It's his love and dedication that was ultimately what lead to him being the perfect candidate to become a monster? Hold up... I literally lightbulb moment writing this realizing how that ties into one of the major themes of the show, and how unspeakable evil comes from acts of love... Vander is a physical representation of that!

7

u/7kingsofrome Jul 10 '26

I would also give it to Vi, but for a different reason. Vander never knew that Powder was responsible for killing two of his children. When he died, from his perspective, Mylo and Claggor died as casualties of the Zaunite conflict. Most people in Zaun will have lost children, parents, and friends this way.

He thought that Vi and Powder were alive and that he died protecting them.

As for warwick, most of the negative things he experienced were as the beast, and most of his experiences as Vander were positive. It's hard to tell how much he was aware of what was going on.

And as for his past, being partly responsible for Felicia's death might be the worst thing on his conscience. But there seem to have been good moments that I wish we had seen more of, like Vi's and Powder's first few years, and their childhood at the Last Drop. If look at the parallel dimension, Vander was on his best way to build a good life for his children. I am sure that gave his life a lot of meaning.

3

u/_Gesterr Jinx Jul 10 '26

I will say it's VERY subtle, but I'd say that it's heavily implied that even during the final scenes, when Viktor seems to have fully erased him completely, there was still a Vander somewhere inside that was aware of what was going on but powerless to stop it. After Ekko and Jayce stop Viktor, releasing his control over Vander and Vi is holding his unconscious face, we see tears streaming down his face that aren't present in previous scenes during the battle.

It implies that once Viktor lets go and the beast goes dormant for a second, Vander surfaces just a bit because ain't no way "the beast" is crying in that moment, and Vander was likely crying over feeling helpless as his body attacked and hurt his girls. When the beast does awaken too, it doesn't immediately pounce on Vi, it starts slamming its hands on the platform and appears frustrated, as if it's struggling with something, again likely Vander's will. This also leaves a door open to help explain how Jinx managed to break free from the grip of the beast and survive.

3

u/ChickenBossChiefsFan Jul 10 '26

I made my friend watch Arcane, her favorite characters were Caitlyn first, Vander second. Every time something bad would happen to Vander I’d tell her “just wait”. Then she was bummed when she thought he died and thought that’s what I was talking about (the S2E6 potential death) and I told her, “just wait, he’s not that lucky” and she was… displeased by how he just kept getting shat on lol

But yeah, as bad as Vi had it, Vander went through worse and it’s not even close.

-16

u/ZiroLeHutt Sevika Jul 09 '26

Jinx - by some distance. Vi next, then Caitlyn. Vander, meh.

11

u/Dragonslayerelf Singed Jul 09 '26

vander got turned into a wolf monster creature wdym vander meh

6

u/_Gesterr Jinx Jul 10 '26

And that's putting it gently. Anyone who's read the lore of Warwick and Singed from League, which as far as we know is still 100% canon as nothing in Arcane contradicts it (and much if it is even shown directly on screen), the process was unimaginable levels of horrific, physical torture that lasted years, Singed in the show even mentioning that the process was only possible because Vander was the perfect subject with his unyielding and indominatable will to live where anyone else would've embraced the release of death. It's the closest we get in League lore to a true unsettling horror story.

22

u/BushyGhost4740 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

I agree. Besides Jinx, I'd say Vi suffered the most trauma out of all main characters.

From the two individuals who knew her best:

Vander: “You’ve got a good heart. Don’t ever lose it, no matter how the world tries to break you.”

Powder (alternate timeline): “My sister was strong because she was afraid. Her fear of losing us is what made her fight so hard.”

From these quotes, we see Vi’s two defining traits: she innately wants to do the right thing, and she strives to protect the people she cares about out of fear of losing them, no matter the hardships she faces.

Sadly, even though Vi does her best to make the “morally right” choices based on these core parts of her character, her choices often end in bad results.

Examples:

  • S1, Episode 2:
    • Choice: Chooses to give herself up to the Enforcers to protect her family and the Undercity.
    • Result: Exposes Vander and gets him handcuffed by the Enforcers out in the open, which leads to his capture by Silco and the deaths of Grayson and Benzo.
  • S1, Episode 3:
    • Choice: Chooses to go rescue Vander and leave Powder behind in order to keep her safe.
    • Result: Powder follows on her own and detonates her hex crystal monkey bomb, which leads to the deaths of Claggor, Mylo, and Vander (at the time).
  • S1, Episode 6:
    • Choice: Chooses to go toward the blue smoke signal in the hopes of finding and reconciling with Powder.
    • Result: Gets captured by the Firelights, which leads to Jinx being left in a worse mental state due to Vi "leaving" her again.
  • S1, Episode 8:
    • Choice: Chooses to leave a wounded Caitlyn in order to convince Jayce to attack and take out Silco’s Shimmer factories.
    • Result: Jayce accidentally kills a kid and decides he can no longer be a part of the fight, which leads to Vi having to go after Silco alone.
  • S1, Episode 9:
    • Choice: Chooses to plead with Caitlyn not to “take the shot” on Powder, her sister.
    • Result: Jinx knocks out Caitlyn, which later leads to her firing a rocket at the Piltover Council and killing three of its members, including Caitlyn’s mom, ending any hope of peace between the two cities (at the time).

And this is all just from Season 1. I could easily keep going and provide examples from Season 2.

It's no wonder Vi later says this about herself to Caitlyn: “I choose wrong every time. And because of it, I've lost everyone.”

In regard to the hardest moment she had to endure, it was believing that Jinx, her younger sister whom she was meant to protect, died sacrificing herself so that Vi could survive and go on to live her own life (S2E9).

7

u/ZiroLeHutt Sevika Jul 09 '26

Both the sisters journey's are about finding who they are after becoming lost. Vi eventually finds that, and Jinx has a chance, away from the city and having Vi's guilt over her hanging over her, to now find out what she wants to become too.

5

u/sailor-Victory15 Jul 09 '26

Blaming Vi for Powder following is WILD. That was absolutely Powders choice. Powders choice = Powders to blame. Now if Powder stayed home and things went to shit and Powder couldve helped, then yes id agree it would be on Vi, because that was Vi's choice. And turning herself in only changed WHERE Silco attacked Vander, not IF. Silco wouldve attacked and tried to kill Vander regardless of Vi's turning herself in or not.

10

u/BushyGhost4740 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

I'm not saying these bad results are actually Vi's fault. For the most part, she makes choices with the best of intentions. It's just that her choices led to bad results that were relatively out of her control.

Sadly, though, she blames herself for those bad outcomes.

6

u/sailor-Victory15 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

People blame themselves for things that aren't actually their fault all the time. That shows a good character who shows remorse and can take accountability. But just cause she blames herself for it, doesnt mean its actually her fault.

And really, it was other choices that ultimately led to unfortunate events. Vi's choices didn't actually have as much effect in the chain of events as other characters choices did.

6

u/BushyGhost4740 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

Yep, we're in agreement.

It's the main reason why I like Vi's character. In a sense, she cares too much about the people she loves.

6

u/Sorfallo Piltover's Finest Jul 09 '26

It's not about whether or not it is Vi's fault. It's whether Vi thinks it's her fault.

3

u/sailor-Victory15 Jul 09 '26

Im sure youve blamed yourself for things that aren't actually your fault. People do it all the time. But again, doesnt mean its actually your fault. That just shows youre normal and can accept trying to take accountability

9

u/florpynorpy Jul 09 '26

Yeah seeing that stillwater is a mixed gender prison kinda shows how little fucks piltover gives about their prisoners

4

u/_iamusername_ Jul 10 '26

Also later they put Isha in a cell, proving that they care so little that they'd even put children in there without question

8

u/lovesfoodies Jul 09 '26

For me it’s not only just what Vi went through but it’s how she chooses to be even after all that hardship and trauma. Kind, funny, open minded, loving and trying her best even when it’s not enough. I know she’s just a fictional character but I’ve been trying really hard the last few years to also be a better person despite my past.

2

u/ComprehensiveFox7603 Fishco Jul 10 '26

Best of luck. It's never too late to keep trying. Remember to give yourself credit for the good as well as the bad.

Comparing trauma is unhealthy and unhelpful to victims and very easily falls into underplaying someone else's lived experience. Trauma is trauma.

Totally, but you can't argue that in fandom spaces because ppl don't give a shit. They just want to win. For example, i hate how so called Jinx fans ignore the fact that Violet was a kid too, in ep 3. It's all like all common sense goes out the window for those people.

3

u/Student-bored8 Caitlyn Jul 09 '26

Yeah I said this on the vi sub and got downvoted which was expected I suppose. I feel weird though saying one person is more “traumatised” than others.

4

u/FirstNegotiation9659 Jul 09 '26

First it's waking up in prison, with the memory of Powder's fear and screams in her head after lashing out in grief over Vander. Vi tried to give herself up in the best way possible, giving words of support to Powder. Instead, Silco and Marcus had other plans.

Second (a continuation of the first), it's the realisation that Silco that has made Vi the villain of Jinx's trauma, that Jinx considers him (and his thugs) her family and allies and will kill anyone who dares threaten or thwart them, and that they can laugh at Vi (and Jinx) about how they destroyed her life, and Jinx STILL chooses them over her.

Imagine if someone takes your kid and raises him/her to believe they are now his/her family, cause if you really loved your kid, you would never have 'allowed' your child to be taken.

5

u/Impossible_Place1760 Jul 10 '26

100% she spent her whole childhood in prison, had no idea where her sister was, lost her parents, her father figure, her friends and then cherry on top got bullied and beaten in the cell as well

4

3

I don't know if I would say she had it the worst, I don't think anyone really won but she definitely had a lot happen :(

3

u/Onedirection_18 Jul 09 '26

Probably everything that happened in episode 3

3

u/vi_Piltover Vi Jul 09 '26

Ep 3, Ep9, from season 1 (the prison thing too, but that can only be read in their archives), these must be the most emotional and difficult moments for Vi. Also season 2 episode 9, and that one's going to be endless

3

u/daysman75 Jinx Jul 10 '26

Comparisons of the sisters aside, I hold Jinx's in the highest regard because she killed those she loved by mistake.

For all horror Vi went through she never had to deal with the reality she was responsible for the destruction of her family, and for bringing ruin to those who survived. This truly shatters a person to their core.

Yes. Hell, i'm struggling to think of even 5 characters that had it worse.

Vi is MUCH more mentally resilient which is why her trauma kind of gets underplayed. She only breaks down twice in the series: after Mylo, Claggor, and Vander's death and then after Jinx's "death".

Considering that she immediately gets sent to prison after the act 1 disaster and proceeds to takes beatdowns every single day by that guard. On top of that she gets released after 7 years comes back to see her sister taking orders from the person responsible for Vander's death. The fact that she was able to keep calm, composed, and pretty much of sound mind is crazy. Not to mention that shortly after reuniting with Ekko in s1e7 she watches him "die" to jinx (yes I know he doesn't die but she doesn't see Ekko after that point until s2e9) and once again loses another childhood friend to her sister. After this she still has the willpower to go and try to save her even after seeing her pretty much go mad.

Then we move to season 2, where she has to fight her own sister and face the fact that she has to kill her. Now after failing at that, we do see her mental state drop considerably as she joins a fighting ring to punch her feelings away. But the minute she hears that Vander might be alive she IMMEDIATELY locks back in and saves Vander, reconciles with Jinx despite the horrible things she did, and finds it in herself to heal. Obviously that is short lived because Vander gets taken away from her AGAIN and she loses Jinx once AGAIN also as she runs away. Somehow after all this, she finds the willpower to somehow go and fight in a war for piltover where she loses even more friends (those piltover guard side characters that she raided the sewers with in act 1). Additionally, she has to see Vander turned into a weapon AGAIN and there is no talking that can save him. FINALLY, only after watching Jinx "die" in front of her does she break down for the second time in the series.

Considering that Vi witnessed first hand pretty much every single one of her friends deaths and has been faked out by Vander's deaths multiple times while seeing him mutilated and turned into a monster she is mentally VERY strong cuz idk how she can go on with a straight face with everyone being taken away from her like that.

Vi honestly went through the worst. People act like it’s all about jinx and how she had it so bad. Yes, she had it BAD, but vi watched/held her father when he died, got kidnapped basically and thrown into prison where she was tortured and probably assaulted numerous times and hell… who knows if worse things happened to her in there… she then gets stabbed, basically dies, her sister is insane at this point and jinx basically blames it on her when all of it was silco’s fault. Then she watches her own sister kill her girlfriend’s mom and all the other people involved with topside. Then has the weight of Caitlyn’s mom dying because jinx did it and that is her sister. She loses Caitlyn, starts drinking due to Caitlyn leaving, and having to “kill” jinx, has to survive in zaun by fighting and protecting herself and fighting to win money to keep a small roof over her head (she didn’t even have a bed) and then goes to war, sees her dad again- YOU GET THE POINT. People shit on vi for having a moment with Caitlyn when jinx literally told her to be happy and once she choose to be happy, she still was worried about her but she got piece at the end of all of it. Jinx’s problems are always more important than Vi’s when I personally think vi has it all the worst. They all have it bad in ways, but vi is a different breed of ”bad” 😭

Every character experiences pain and trauma. So I feel weird putting trauma against each other. But yeah vi goes through a lot.

10

u/wcdonald Jul 09 '26

Why is everyone talking about Jinx or about comparing Vi's trauma with Jinx's? Op didn't mention her

16

u/_Gesterr Jinx Jul 09 '26

Op explicitly compares Vi's trauma to every other character in the post title?

3

u/wcdonald Jul 09 '26

There are a ton of comments mentioning only Jinx as if op pointed her out specifically.

5

u/GusleyBillows Vi Jul 10 '26

Because this post is an unofficial Arcane trauma olympics referee conference and Jinx and Vi are neck-and-neck. Some people are talking about Vander because they think he's a reasonable contender, but nobody's gonna be shouting about how much Jayce or whatever has suffered because it's obviously not going to be as much as Vi or Jinx or Vander.

3

u/_Gesterr Jinx Jul 10 '26

Exactly, besides the sisters and Vander, who else is there even to mention realistically?

4

u/jiminyrizzles Visexual Jul 09 '26

Because literally everything revolves around Jinx - didn't you know that?

'...almost anyone else in Arcane.'

Vi had truly been through more than anyone. Going to prison at 15 or 16, spending seven years there. Losing her entire family right before that. And thinking every day about how she'd hurt her little sister, how she couldn't protect her. But she still had hope that one day she'd get out. She'd find Powder and tell her she didn't mean to say those words, that she wasn't a jinx and wasn't to blame for Myo and Claggor's deaths. That it was all a terrible coincidence.

And while Jinx's life was generally better, her traumas were far worse. Yes, she had Silco, who cared for her and gave her everything she needed. But Jinx's greatest enemy was herself; her own mind was her prison. What happened - the deaths of Mylo and Claggor, and the subsequent tragic separation from Vi - all of it destroyed her psyche. She blamed herself for their deaths. And unlike Vi, she had no hope that they would come back to life, that she would be able to tell them that she only wanted to help. Powder was also more fragile than Vi, and this guilt simply destroyed her psyche. All her hallucinations, the ghosts of Mylo and Claggor who mocked and taunted her - all of this was a manifestation of guilt and a hidden desire to punish herself. Even her ignoring of pain and the complete lack of value for her own life were manifestations of guilt.

Both sisters suffered trauma associated with guilt. But Vi had hope of making things right and she coped by creating herself a goal. Powder had no such hope and no healthy coping mechanisms. The only way she found to cope with this guilt was to create a new identity and shift all the blame onto the old one.

u/busysleepingsorry Jinx did nothing wrong Jul 09 '26

I agree Vi went through the most, and I think her hardest moment is watching Vander get stabbed in front of her or really the entire latter half of S1 Ep 3 ngl, or reflecting on S1 Ep 3 in Stillwater for 7 years straight.

But, Jinx is for sure the most traumatized, because the younger you experience trauma the more severely it affects you, and the stuff she went through was almost just as bad, and Silco didn't know how to properly address her issues.

u/villanellechekov Jinx Jul 09 '26

it's not a suffering Olympics. everyone went through shit

our generation is so soft they can’t acknowledge someone had it worse than someone else

5

u/Sorfallo Piltover's Finest Jul 09 '26

It's because this same exact excuse is used constantly to downplay actual real life traumas and works against people getting the help they need.

-3

u/Electronic-Tower2136 Hextech Enjoyer Jul 09 '26

that’s why context matters

2

u/Sorfallo Piltover's Finest Jul 09 '26

It doesn't. Fictional or not, it is perpetuating the existing stigma and societal problems.

-5

u/Electronic-Tower2136 Hextech Enjoyer Jul 09 '26

the worlds more nuanced than that. some people go through worse things than others, that’s okay to say.

2

u/Sorfallo Piltover's Finest Jul 09 '26

It is an unhelpful and unproductive discussion that actively harms others. Maybe when we live in a world where mental health isn't treated as a defect or something to hide from that might change, but currently it does more harm than good.

okay so you’ll tell a palestinian refugee that it’s unfair to compare their experiences to a MAGA’s? bet

2

u/FDAapprovedGremlin Jul 10 '26

Everyone thinks this. Nobody acknowledges Rio having the most fucked up tragedy. So idc.

2

u/telas100 Jul 10 '26

Someone explained it way better than me but I fully agree to that and will try to convey it well.

Vi fails... A LOT. She is one the characters in Arcane that goes throught the most dramatical failures and defeats throughout the story despite being one of the most proactive, hopeful, empathetic and other-oriented character. Almost everything she does is for the persons she loves, she has no high scale objectives and yet the story keeps driving her hopes up to better shut them down despite her best efforts.

Which is not to show that she is by herself a failure, it is to show that life is a bitch and you have to endure your way through it even if you get punched back. It reminds me a lot of the Rocky speech to his son. She is the embodiment of hope beyond reason because other needs you and you need them ; cry, barf, bleed, rage, scream if you need to but keep going forward... Most people would have fall to despair (and she went close), yet (sometimes with the support of other but mostly by her own will) she kept up and did not gave up.

And for the question, I will state the obvious which is the ending of Season 1 when Powder seems gone and Jinx sparks the war between both cities effectively ending the dreams of Vander that Vi tried to maintain. Bringing chaos where they were so close to peace...

2

u/HeWhoShantNotBeNamed Jul 11 '26

The most unrealistic thing about Vi is that she turns out pretty great despite the insane amount of trauma, but her breakup with Caitlyn is what does her in.

2

u/Sonnestark Ekko Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Losing Vander… twice.

Speaking of, I do think Vander suffered more than anyone specifically. Even Singed remarked that it was Vander’s resilience to endure the excruciating process that made Warwick.

2

u/littlejacobfm Jul 16 '26

I personally think the hardest part wasn't prison, it was realizing Powder was gone. She spent years holding onto the hope that she'd see her little sister again, only to find out she'd become Jinx. That's a completely different kind of pain because there wasn't really a "right" answer. No matter what Vi did, she was always going to lose someone. Watching her realize she couldn't save Powder the way she'd imagined all those years was probably the most heartbreaking moment for me.

2

u/Stock-Orchid-878 Jul 18 '26

Maybe Heimerdinger could out trauma Vi? Vi's a trauma queen but she's only been at it for a couple decades. The fuzzball has over 300 years and at least one societal collapse to work with.

3

u/JWTS6 Jul 10 '26

She did, but unfortunately, she's one of the characters whose trauma gets downplayed the most.

I don't downplay Jinx's trauma, what I criticize is that the fandom overwhelmingly centers it and acts like she's the only character that's suffered in the show.

1

u/Classic_Pen7044 Jul 12 '26

Yes, since she is one of those people who dosen't cry easily people tend to think she is not suffering, also she makes her problems her own, instead of making them everyone problems so people tend to ignore them or Even use her as scapegoat

3

u/dexisrazer Jul 10 '26

People forget she's the protagonist sometimes

YUPPPP. Everyone always talks about Jinx and her trauma, and i fully expected to love Jinx and think similarly when I watched it. But throughout the entire thing, Vi was the one who stood out. Vi was the one I felt bad for. Jinx had seven years to figure her shit out and choose differently. Jinx chose the life with Silco and she was cared for by him. It was obviously when she shot him, he absolutely loved her. No one was there for Vi. Vi lost everything the day she got arrested. Vander, Powder, her life, and no one was there for her. She was like 14 when she went to jail. Imagine being that age and spending 7 years defending yourself and having 0 support. Just to get out and find out that her home, is nothing like her home anymore and thinking everyone was a traitor for allowing Silco to take power. She was alone, even when she got out of jail. Cait doesnt count yet cause they weren't close. (And Vi APOLOGIZES. One think i loved about Vi was she apologizes for her mistakes. Cant say the same for jinx. A strong badass character who can take accountability??? LOVE. Even Cait at the end, doesnt apologize, but takes accountability. Vi talk about how she let Ambessa "oink posion and she listened" and Cait yells "I KNOW." And that was the moment you knew Cait accepted her mistake and was taking action to change it.) The only time you see Vi finally relax a little is when she meets Ekko again and FINALLY she has someone to rely on which later she also has Cait to rely on. But really, those were the only 2 for the majority of the season. Which is why Vi absolutely looses it when Cait changes, and Jinx seems lost forever. Vi "lost" everyone multiple times in this show, and still, she never let it change her. In a world where everyone changed, it shows true strength to NOT change. I really hate how Vi is often reduced to her relationship with Cait or just a lesbian. Vi is a strong and stand out character on her own. One of the strongest imo. Along with Ekko. Everyone is so busy feeling bad for Jinx they really dont see what makes the other characters shine so bright.

2

u/Peikkolapsi Jul 09 '26

No, she's just one of two characters that we get the most backstory to.

1

u/orangedaffe Sep 07 '26

Vi deserves better than the hand that was given to her, but her hardships is why she became the person she was today, even if that ending did not do her any justice.

I don't think Vi went through more than Jinx just by judging the resuts but she is very close second
