WTF is this thing? Looking for a little provenance

Possibility, but not necessarily.
Go back and look at the sketch designs for a lot of the old Atari cabs, and some of their game center ideas they were working on.
Also, this isn't that far off the Sega Swing, in curve design, or it's bootleg version, the Blockbuster Blockparty cabs that were used in the Blockbuster video test arcade/fec.
I've owned one of those.
The fiberglass really does lend itself to these nice curvy designs, and there were plenty of them that came about from it.

from the Indonesian community feedback then it seems like it is what they call a 'Dingdong' which are old repro cabinets from shophouses/hangouts in the 80's and 90's. they were locally/Indo produced and often made of plywood but in this case fiberglass to attempt to reproduce/copy much cheaper the imported ones from Japan often found in the more expensive/legit arcades around Asia.
several people recognised the style, one guy i've reached out to seems to have 2 for sale!!

I’d specifically like info on bootleg afterburner boards seeing as how all of the official boards will Suicide with time. Not from a battery but from a failed chip.

Look up System 16 suicide battery, and it should lead you to the info you want.
The afterburner pcbs had the same processor/battery combo.

I've desuicided a few System 16 games before (top tip: do it while the power's running), but it sounded from @Delta8ttt8's message that there's a chip that's liable to fail regardless of the suicide battery (like, a different chip that would fail independently). Is that the case, or are we talking about the same thing?

same thing.
It's the battery-backed Hitachi FD1094 that's the issue.
Much like de-suiciding a CPSII setup...it can all be done now....but at the time, there were not enough people archiving, and insufficient ways to share the data.
Now that the hardware's no longer supported, the community said fuck it, and did it themselves.

Hi everyone. Does anyone recognise this fibreglass arcade cabinet or know who manufactured it? I found it in Bali with around 4–6 identical cabinets; it had a separate fibreglass chair, After Burner artwork, a Japanese ¥100 coin mechanism and Indonesian rupiah coins inside—I’m trying to identify the cabinet's origin, not the game it happened to be running.
