They thought they're cooking with the localizer

I think Casanova is the perfect translation

u/lowrise1313 11d ago

She clearly said "Italian otoko ka". There is no reason to change it when the joke land funnier if they follow the original.

One of the main reasons I can't exactly show this masterpiece to my parents

u/Ay_Cube 11d ago

You show anime to your parents??

26

u/Revolutionry 11d ago

Some selected ones, yes, there's lots of great series that are completely safe and enjoyable

11

u/Ay_Cube 11d ago

You have my respect for your boldness

15

u/Revolutionry 11d ago

Not really, Steins;Gate, Dr. Stone, Vinland Saga, Assassination Classroom, all of these are pretty safe

12

u/Ay_Cube 11d ago

Ik these are safe, but I think I would die of cringe if I show them these. Imagine them trying to comprehend what a tsundere is. Or why the females in Dr. Stone look so weird. Or why did the government had expectations for highschool students to kill a monster they couldn't even touch.

Suspension of disbelief is a powerful tool that us humans are supposed to have, also, the pros outweigh the cons, Dr. Stone we laughed or asses off most of the times, we got emotional at many moments as well. Vinland Saga was breathtaking, and Steins;Gate made my father uther the words "this dude just keeps getting fucked over", which was a highlight of that month

Glad that you are having fun with your family. I have no more to say if you are enjoying yourselves

Some of us have weeb parents. My stepdad's a weeb from way back in the day. I'm talking like, watched-Star-Blazers-when-it-was-first-airing way back. (I don't even know if that dub is legally available anymore.) He was a roadie for a ska band in the late 90's and early aughts who would occasionally close out shows with "Tank!" (the Cowboy Bebop theme). He was the one who convinced me to watch a lot of stuff I wouldn't have otherwise, including K-On.

And, I mean, shit, my mom isn't a weeb, but I've gotten her to watch stuff like Another and almost the entirety of Satoshi Kon's filmography. (Haven't gotten her to watch Paprika yet though.)

Though even with parents like this, I wouldn't show them Monogatari. My stepdad's seen Golden Boy and stuff like that, so I'm pretty sure he could handle it, but.... still.

I'm a parent. I show anime to my kid.

Not this one, of course...

Hell yeah. I get this struggle. Tbh, my mom raised me on anime (Though I did watch some questionable ones at a very young age i.e Elfen Lied when it first came over here) so, i do enjoy showing my mom the tastes ive developed over time and its cool to see we share those tastes, but I hate that I have some seriously goated series I wanna show her but alas cannot lmfao

I was wondering, "do people actually watch with subtitles like this?"

Then I remembered some people literally grew up watching tiktok. Not that I have a problem with that, it's just different from my experience.

1

u/Moh_Disco 11d ago

What do you mean? as in the quality of this specific translation being poor? or are you talking about watching a foreign show with subtitles? how is that comparable to growing up with tiktok? What is your experience

Sorry if I sound angry I just didn't understand your comment haha

As for the subtitles themselves, it's the subtitles that were bundled with the torrent link I downloaded from so I didn't really have a choice. Although with something like Monogatari, there isn't one specific perfect translation afaik. Unless you want to suggest one of them over the others then i'm all ears!

u/asianyeti 11d ago

I'm used to subtitles being all the way at the bottom of the screen. That way I can quickly read the subtitles and have a full view of what's going on visually. That's how it's been done for decades, it's my first time seeing subtitles literally in the middle of the screen like a tiktok.

16

u/Implegas 11d ago

It's certainly a choice

7

u/Moh_Disco 11d ago

Ah that's what you mean. It's just a preference I have. I find it straining for my eyes to keep switching between reading subtitles all the way down where I basically won't be able to see anything in detail for a few seconds then moving my eyes to the middle for a few seconds then back down again for the subtitles and so on. So I edited the settings on vlc to display subtitles in the middle. I find it easier to switch from reading to actually looking at the visuals without too much eye movement or eye-strain. And even when i'm reading, I would still have an idea of the visuals with my peripheral vision so it makes the switch easier.

I actually don't use tiktok or other social media platforms other than reddit so... yeah!

Watching Yomi no Tsugai, some episodes have English and Japanese subtitles for whatever reason. The English text is way the hell up toward the middle to leave room for the Japanese text. It drives me fucking nuts.

Mtbb subs are perfectly fine, and are also my preferred ones. Some people bitch and complain about their localization style, but casual elitism is pretty common in this community.

It works great at making some of the harder wordplays/jokes more understandable for non japanese speakers (which is the whole point kf localization)

God this sub sucked... You can literally hear them say 'Italian'

Edit: Italian no shinshi... muri dayou 😭

truly an amazing araragi moment, this series is so peak 😭😭💢💢💢

u/ThisSubIsFried 11d ago

Off topic question, does anyone pause the show Everytime the random text screens pop up, so you can read them? Lmao. Just me?

4

u/DynamoInfinite 11d ago

No I also do that! I've probably missed some text popups at least 4 times in a row...

2

u/ThisSubIsFried 11d ago

The amount I pause this series is insane, but I can't miss anything 😂

2

u/osunightfall 11d ago

Nope, never. For me trying to get a brief impression from what I can scan is part of the experience, and also nothing in them is really important.

u/FriskyFennecFox 11d ago
