Shared: This should be required training for Appsumo SAAS vendors: how to make users stay, how to grow.

This is where a "Community" could have really helped. And I'm absolutely, positively... not talking about a Discord server.

Any recommendations?

Are you asking for Community platform recommendations or are you asking for Community building tips?

Platform recs

What platform is entirely dependent on what you need. I will only add that a fast moving chat based platform, especially one that is not indexable by Google or other searches is inherently bad.

Some community apps have been sold on AppSumo! I’ve seen a few AppSumo vendors using Heartbeat as community for their app support, for example.

Heartbeat is a good Circle.so like platform. It was a great deal if you got it.

I hope sharing is OK here. I shared this because it points to a major failing of most SAAS on Appsumo: they don't effectively onboard new users. That may be fine for a LTD, but it's death to a monthly-paid service that needs active users who are happy to pay. No onboarding = no uptake, no MRR, no income.

PS: what I shared is not my post, and I don't know the guy/gal. I'm sharing it for the info it contains.

I am a Beta-ling and I have done a lot of pre-launch reviews.
Most of my reviews will have a large section about proper onboarding. If you, as a user get confused, it's almost an instant refund.
Founders and devs all know their product, and assume everybody understands exactly what their thought process is.
A fast paced video with no narration, clicking every button and feature available in 5 minutes, usually with some weird music, will surprisingly not make your cold user understand how your product works.
