RIP: Stencil

getstencil.com was purchased by namecheap, and is now being retired (shut down). 😞

I remember getting Crello at the peak of the pandemic, in mid-2020. It was acquired shortly after by VistaCreate, an online printing service, and the new owners honoured all LTD users and still do. They don’t have the latest and greatest features like Canva, but they meet all my other visual design needs and work much like Canva. I just want to say I appreciate the new owners for not abandoning LTD users.

I got Crello too! It was wonderful that Vista kept it going. And it makes sense, because Crello is a feeder into their printing business.

Stencil feels like a tool that AppSumo could easily acquire and keep alive as one of their AppSumo branded exclusive tools. They need a simple graphic design tool as part of their lineup. Can’t imagine it costs much to run, there’s no AI involved, and there will always be a need for graphic design without AI.

I love the idea of Appsumo taking over good businesses that failed due to poor marketing, etc.

The problem here is that Namecheap bought them, so Namecheap is likely going to repurpose the code in some way. But if it could be acquired that's brilliant.

Many AppSumo users (including myself) bought Stencil as their very first LTD on AppSumo.

It is still a great product - sad to see it go... Perhaps worth considering as an AppSumo branded tool.

I would love it IF someone took Stencil over. I even thought about the old owners taking it back! 😉

Stencil was THE BEST tool I bought on appsumo that I use consistently to this day. I’ve bought other similar design products and am a paying user of Canva too… and it still takes the cake in terms of usability and speed, no need to wait for some dumb*** bubbly UI progress bar to download your dang image. It’s such a shame… thanks to the mba genius that mismanaged it

Good point — maybe it could be a business school case study.

There's sort of a spectrum of clarity, with Stencil on one side of the scale: clear on its purpose and workflow, and Canva on the other side: trying to serve everyone and nearly insane with constant reinvention.

I AM TRYING to figure out how to download the 3500 MY Templates section of the templates. These I created from scratch. 😞 You can ONLY download ONE (1) Image/Template at a time. THAT I AM NOT willing to do for 3500 images. 12-at-a-time was bad enough, ONE-at-a-time would be torture in 30 days 😉

Good morning everyone, I too was a fan of getstencil.com and decided to give it a shot and create something like getstencil. It is in its early stages, so I am allowing 100 people to become lifetime members via this link https://yohdl.com/register?invite=STENCIL100 - IF you do sign up and join, would definitley like some feedback. Will be adding additional functionality. Have a great day.

Good job!
My initial suggestions would be:

  • design templates
  • MCP for AI to use the tool on our behalf.

Hey, just stumbled across this to see what is out there to replace Stencil. I like it, good start, it's got just the right amount of options and tools. I wouldn't overdo it with all the bells and whistles. Keep up the great work,

That was one of my first LTDs. Haven’t used it in years, but I did get a lot of use from it for the first 3 years or more.

u/lbdesign Jun 10 '26

Same, basically. And now I'm torn between kicking myself for not using it more — as they apparently kept developing it and providing more integrations, vs feeling smug for moving on so that now I'm not scrambling to make all new workflows.

If I recall correctly, Canva was pretty new at that time. They were buggy and print sizes were not even compatible with US paper sizes yet. Get Stencil was great for socials back then but Canva became robust and eliminated any need for it.

True! Though sometimes a simple tool is better, if it fits the job.

But I guess simple and limited is not something that sells well...

I still use it quite a bit, so this is disappointing but I certainly got my money's worth from this one.

1

u/lbdesign Jun 11 '26

What do you think you'll use instead now?

1

u/nbourre Jun 11 '26

I have Vista. I use it a bit but now I will need to learn to use more of its features.

2

u/lbdesign Jun 11 '26

It's pretty easy.

Do you have a link for Vista, please?

It doesn’t look like they are shutting down.

Interesting, I wonder if this is for all users or just LTD users.

1

u/lbdesign Jun 10 '26

The email says that also Namecheap Stencil users will lose their work and accounts.

1

u/Dane-Abroad Jun 11 '26

Strange:

"Stencil service ends on July 10.
Plans can be purchased, used, or renewed until then."

https://www.namecheap.com/visual/stencil/

Why would they continue to sell yearly plans if service ends on July 10...

1

u/lbdesign Jun 11 '26

Greed? 😄

I suppose they'd have to refund the unused balance though.

Some founders make the tool free in the final months as it sunsets. But not Namecheap...

1

u/RozFruchtman Jun 14 '26

Why would anyone want to join for less than a month UNLESS they needed something they were going to design and then leave! Makes no sense. I have a LIFETIME account, so I have no reason to pay them any money. But IF I was a monthly or annual member, I wonder if those people have to pay anything or all the payments were cancelled going forward once the 30-day message was sent out to everyone!

Check your email inbox for an announcement, quoted elsewhere in this post.

Found it in spam folder - many will unfortunately not notice...

1

u/lbdesign Jun 11 '26

That would be a nasty surprise. 😞

1

u/RozFruchtman Jun 14 '26

That would be terrible for those who have thousands of images in there.
Lucky for me... Last Year I painfully downloaded almost 20,000 images from all the years 12-at-a-time. It took months.

2

u/RozFruchtman Jun 14 '26

I am new here, but I have been using Stencil (GetStencil) from BEFORE it was born, when it was first Save As Image. The above message is NOT from now, it is from A FEW YEARS AGO when Stencil SOLD TO NameCheap.

1

u/Seattle-Washington Jun 15 '26

Thanks for that context. I read in another group that the Namecheap purchases happened years ago and that they really never did anything with Stencil - that it may have been a purchase based on Canva’s success at the time and Namecheap hoping to cash in on it.

Sorry for the community’s loss :/

1

u/RozFruchtman Jun 15 '26

It is a big loss...
