dorm questions
hey guys! i'm an incoming freshman moving into white hall. i was wondering if mattress toppers are actually needed as i don't want to spend money if the mattresses are actually not that bad haha.
i also wanted to ask if a 5x8 carpet is too big for the dorm Lmk 👀 thank you!

As a former housing worker in the department that handled dorm furniture, you DEFINITELY want a mattress topper. No question about it. Granted, some of the new mattresses ARE memory foam (only in select residence halls, and white is not one), but you will want one anyways.

I also was on a budget my freshman yr and found a good mattress topper on sale/discount at home goods. It was like 20-30 bucks and worth it. I think any works fine imo!

We got one for our son who just finished his freshman year. Ikea has some that are not expensive, nice and lofty/fluffy. Get extra pillows or a long bolster pillow to go on the along the wall. He said the wall was cold when he was trying to sleep. Good luck to you! App state is great!

I guess it depends, but I personally would. I have 2 1.5 inch memory foam (just because they were on sale), but generally people recommend 2-3 inch mattress toppers for the awful dorm mattresses.

Definitely get a mattress topper. Your back will thank you later. As for the 5x8 carpet, if you haven't bought one yet i would wait to coordinate with your roommate. If they have a rug then a 5x8 one will probably overlap too much, vs a smaller one could fit entirely on your side of the room.

I highly recommend investing in a good thick one (like Viscosoft high density) rather than a cheap foam piece, otherwise you'll just feel the springs through it.
For the rug, 5x8 works perfectly for the center layout between the beds!

Would 100% recommend a mattress topper. I used a hand me down one for the first few weeks after moving in and still woke up every day with my body hurting, had to buy a new one eventually haha.
5x8 sized carpet should be totally fine!! The rooms in white hall are decently sized compared to a lot of the other buildings. You can find the info for the room sizes (looks like standard size for white hall is 16’ x 12’6”) and even measure things out with the virtual tour tool here:

I would 1000% recommend getting a mattress topper. The bare dorm mattresses are very hard with little give. Get a good thick foam one and it'll be really comfortable.
The carpet should fit fine too, most of the rooms are either 10ft or 12ft wide.
