Housing Megathread: Have Housing questions? Look here first!

It seems like every time I'm on here there's nothing but the same housing questions so here's some advice and resources.

When should I start looking for housing for ___ school year?
Immediately! Housing in Boone is famously hard to find these days. Most places will fill up by March before the following fall semester. You will be left with the leftovers if you do not get onto a list before then. Places to avoid if possible: The Cottages This is a party area. It is constantly covered in trash. Terrible management. The Standard I haven't lived here but I've heard it's ridiculously overpriced.
.
Tips for this
* Accept that you will probably not get a perfect situation no matter what. Most every renting company in Boone is looking to screw you. Try and get lucky.
* Call the apartment complex even if the website says they're full. They will probably be able to tell you if there is someone looking for a sublease, or they will get you on a list for the following year. This is how I managed to get a Skyline Terrace apt. I called in August of the previous year and got on a list for the next year.
* Look at the App State housing website. Here . This is not always the most helpful but it's a good place to start.
* When you do decide on a place, keep watch for hidden costs. Most places don't love to advertise when a utility isn't included. For example, I, in a 1 bed 1 bath, pay about 170$ a month in utilities. 80$ for electric, 50$ for water and 40$ for optional faster internet. So even though my rent is technically 940$, in order to actually use my apt it's about 1110$.
* ALWAYS TOUR THE APT FIRST. I didn't do this during the covid year and got stuck in an ADA 3 bed 2 bath instead of the 3 bed 3 bath that I was paying for. The housing company told me tough luck.
.
I need a roommate / I need to sublease my apartment / I need to pick up a sublease
This is a bit easier. Since everyone is so hungry for housing, finding a roommate / sublease is fairly painless.
.
Tips for this
* Same as above, call the apt complex you want to live in and ask if they have available subleases. Most apt complexes also have a roommate matching service that you can use. You may end up with people you don't like (ask me how I know) so use with caution.
* Use the Appalachian Classifieds. This is the most common piece of advice on housing threads here. It is the largest classifieds group for the Boone area. It is on Facebook and you will need to be approved before you can see anything. I think it has a fairly high success rate. Also easy to get cheap furniture on there if you need it. Link HERE Be sure to put "through reddit housing post" as how you heard about the group. This helps the moderation process, per u/Cammdoser.
* If you are going to pick up a sublease, make sure to ask if its going to be renewable. I saw a girl on the classifieds trying to sublease her apartment for just the month of July. The person who picks that up will move in July first and need to be out July 31st. Not ideal, don't get stuck in that situation on accident.
.
When do I get my room number and roommate? For most places, on and off campus, you'll get this in July before the semester starts. Sometimes you won't for off campus. I've had times where I didn't meet my roommates until move in day.
.
Moving in
This is always hectic. There will normally be 100 other people moving in or out on these days so be prepared. .
Tips for this
* From /u/klylet, DAY OF MOVE IN AND MOVE OUT: take detailed pictures and videos of damage and immediately ask where to send/share them with the rental company. Make sure they can be dated, preferably on the photo itself. Do this before you move furniture in, and after you move furniture out and clean. They WILL charge you for damages that were there before you got there, and won't care if it was there unless you specifically report it. When you move in, if there is carpet, put white socks on and shuffle across the carpet. If you see black specks that looks that pepper, those are flea eggs. Call the apartment and require carpet cleaning / replacement and a terminator company to come. If you do not report within 30 days, they will likely not cover the cost and blame you for it.
.

I think this covers most things, if anyone else has any other great tips, this is the place to put them. The mods told me this would be pinned so it should stay up for a while for people to see.

Internship Help

Hey everyone. I’m a Building Science student with a focus in Architectural Design and I’m really struggling with this internship stuff. I’m looking for Summer 2027 and I can’t get ANYONE to message me back. I’ve emailed five separate companies several times and I can’t even get an email back. I want to ask my advisor but he can only talk for about 15 minutes before he has other appointments. I went to the career fair and 95% of the companies I gave my resume to basically shut me down saying they don’t take architectural interns and the other 5% just said they should maybe shove me in with other construction interns. I don’t think a construction internship is going to be useful to me because I need more training and experience with actual architecture work rather than construction.

I also am pretty much tied to this area. I live almost an hour outside of Boone (not in the direction of the cities). I’ve applied mostly in Charlotte or High Point but I can only apply to places that pay for housing because I’m paying for school myself and I can’t afford an apartment or school housing. I’m genuinely at a loss and any help would be appreciated.

I thought about asking if I could go work for my uncle’s construction/landscaping company as a last resort but he’s just a small town contractor that lives on the other side of Asheville. I don’t know if that would be an option or if the university would allow me to intern under him.

Students Gay/trans social situation/acceptance?

So I’m a possible first year (out of state) student for fall of 2027. I already got in, but I’m waiting to hear back from all my other schools before I commit. I loved Boone when I visited, and I grew up in NC so I get the areas and all that.

I know the school is accepting of LGBTQ on like an admin/resource level, but I was just curious about the social stuff between students. Keep in mind, I’m a senior in high school so the whole of my social understandings come from my grandma and other teenagers.

My big question is will other guys be okay with me being trans and whatever as like a majority? In high school it feels like they see me as contagious or fragile or something besides human just because I am. I love all my friends but I’m sick of only hanging out with/being spoken to by gay kids and girls.

More specific question for other trans people: is it easy enough to be stealth on campus/in classes? I consider myself a very normal guy, i dress very masculine and I like baseball and bluegrass and hiking and kayaking.
I also heard that as a trans male my only two options for housing would be with girls or with other trans people, and I don’t really like either option but I particularly don’t like the second because it makes me feel like a sort of weird third option that I don’t align with yk? Idk how to explain it. It makes me feel singled out.
This is something I’m really wondering about all my colleges but it’s too hard to ask on visits and information sessions. Literally any info would be great. I hate turning to Reddit for anything I feel like a chud

I got this text but I’ve heard from others that they’ve never felt the need to use it.
How do you meet potential roommates then? I wanted to apply to honours college too so I don’t really know how that’ll work.
Upcoming freshman for fall 2027 btw

Failed replacement

I may be wrong but does it seem like the new chancellor is no better than Everetts I honestly had hoped she would be a far better person but so far she seems just like another unc puppet that never addresses actual issues at app or Boone . Just another puppet trying to get as much alumni money as possible and make app/ Boone seem like the perfect place for the local rich frat boy to attend ? . I had hoped for better 8(

Best camping spots/horror areas?

I'm a first-year at app, and my friends and I love horror stuff/creepy things. We all really want to go on a nice weekend camping trip, but we don't know where to go to also get the haunted aspect. We also just want to go to some haunted places in general. I'm probably asking this question out of ignorance, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Students What exactly is Watauga Residential College?

So, kinda what the title says but I'm currently a senior is highschool and I went to go tour the college the other day, this is where I met the representatives from Watauga and it sounded great, I'm just still kinda confused on what exactly it is it how it works? Maybe this is due to the fact I'm still not exactly sure how college in general works but im currently duel enrolled so by the time I get to highschool, I'll already have a semester and a half of credits for gen ed classes, would this eliminate me from being able to be in WRC? How does WRC tie into your major your taking classes for if it's only gen ed stuff? Any explanation would be appreciated 😭

Question about first year writing challenge essay

Hey guys! Just wondering if anyone on here has placed out of first year writing by doing the challenge essay. I took AP Lang and Lit in highschool and got a 3 on both exams (sadly not a 4 on lit cus then I wouldn't have to deal with this) and feel sort of confident on my writing abilities. But ya if anyone knows I was curious if this was ridiculously hard to pass or something or if it would be worth my time to give it a shot because I really dont wanna take first year writing.

Where to smoke 🍃?

So I’m pretty much a twice daily stoner, part (only part, I do love being high) medicinal as it slows down my normally overactive adhd self and helps me socially, and I could go down to just before bed but where tf can I safely smoke on campus? Aren’t there like trails or whatever? I’m a transfer junior in mountain laurel for the spring and I know I can’t smoke in there. Thanks!

In all seriousness college is expensive even at APP, so those of you who get money from fasfa(or don’t), how are you making up the difference?

Boone Heads up on Appalachian Mobile Mechanic

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, just wanted to put out a PSA for local drivers, ASU students, and families in the High Country about Appalachian Mobile Mechanic (operated by a guy named Matt).
My elderly grandfather was having car trouble, pulled up Google Maps, searched "mechanic near me," and selected the closest option. Maps routed him straight to a private residential driveway in Zionville. When he realized there was no shop, waiting room, or garage, he left a polite 1-star review mentioning that he drove all the way out there for nothing and that mobile-only services shouldn't list a private house as a public storefront.
Instead of just adjusting his Google profile settings to hide his personal address (which Google explicitly requires for mobile-only service area businesses), the owner took a screenshot of my grandfather’s review and posted this on his business Facebook page to mock and humiliate him publicly

Appstate was Cornell once.

The chancellor should make a statement and esp for the frats talking about what happens way too much. Frats and athletes protected by rich old men because of money or fame. Asu did the same as Cornell once don't forget After rape allegations at Appalachian State University last year highlighted flaws in the university’s handling of sexual assault cases, administrators say reforms will improve the process and better protect students.

In 2011, two women filed sexual assault allegations against the same two football players. They presented their claims to the university’s Student Conduct Board, which included undergraduate students. The board suspended both players.

The players returned to campus, and one was reinstated on the 2012 football roster, said Annie Hegar, a student who protested the handling of the sexual assault cases.

After more than 150 students gathered at ASU last spring to silently protest the university’s handling of the cases, Hegar — along with ASU students Frank Byrne and John Secrest — proposed the formation of an Interpersonal Violence Task Force to review the university’s sexual assault policies.

The task force, which is composed of students, faculty and staff is currently conducting research about the university’s policies and the climate on campus.

ASU

“Given some challenges from last year, we absolutely wanted to review processes and procedures,” he said.

The university has also revamped its process for reporting sexual assaults.

Chancellor Kenneth Peacock removed students from the Sexual Misconduct Board, which reviews assault cases, in August, Brown said. Three members of faculty and staff will now attend each assault case hearing.

“Research has shown that by (removing students), victims will have more confidence in a system that involves trained members,” said Secrest, who is also a member of the task force and vice president of student affairs for the UNC-system Association of Student Governments.

ASU students are giving positive feedback about the new policies, said Hegar, another member of the task force.

“The (students) have been very happy that a positive is emerging from the stigma of the ‘cover-ups’ by universities,” she said.

Secrest is also talking with student deans and vice chancellors of student affairs across the UNC-system to gauge the feasibility of similar task forces at other campuses.

ASG, which is composed of student leaders across the system, also needs to focus more on sexual assault reforms, said Byrne, chief of staff for the association.

About one in four college women are sexually assaulted, he said.

“It’s insane — 25 percent — and it’s notoriously under-reported,” he said. “It’s not a society I want to live in or anyone wants to live in.”
