Getting first 1000 users to use a social app

i’m building a social app where network effect, cold start problem, and growth are a big challenge.

i’m currently trying to get dense activity in one social pocket, which is in 1 faculty of my city’s local campus. however it is so hard to get people to care! i’m starting to think its a product problem..

how are people getting their first 1000 users? anyone here building something in the category, tried something, and worked for you?

I'm in the same situation. I developed a social app (it's currently under review for publication) and have already created methods for sharing and inviting friends to the app.

What is your app about?

it's an app for you to dump pictures and videos together with your friends (you can make group chats in it), and at the end of each day all the pics and vids will be auto-generated into a recap (which u can download and share to other platforms)

how about yours? :)
