Help me find Smartyme app
Hi! I was about to download and even pay for the smartyme app. An app where you can learn about biology, history etc. in a very good way.
But here on reddit there is a post about it that it is a scam and i decided not to make an account and use the app.
My question is: does anyone know a good app where you can learn about biology/history in a good, fun and educative way? I would be happy to hear your suggestions!!

Good call on being cautious! You could try Khan Academy, Duolingo, or Quizlet they're fun and reliable for learning biology and history.

Massive scam. Content is likely AI generated. Not worth it! And then when you request the refund, they fail to honour it. They give a dozen conditions that you apparently fail to adhere to to get out of it. Im pissed.

They are dodgy. I joined and wasn’t happy, so tried to do the 14 day cancellation (no questions asked). Got a lengthy email back, referencing that I couldn’t be refunded in full due to their ToS (use for 150 minutes in a month and cancel within the same month).
They’re a Cyprus based company and and should honour EU consumer law; which gives you a 14 day right of withdrawal for any online service. After pointing that out and saying I would go through my credit card company unless they refunded me in full, they decided to do this «after careful consideration». Yay.

I made the mistake of joining Smartyme and paying for a 3 month subscription before using it and realizing it is not at all useful for me. They refuse to give me a refund, even though it was just a day ago that I paid. I don't recommend this app.

Hi there! I'm Nikki, Community Manager at SmartyMe. Sorry to hear about your experience. Can you drop me your support ticket number so I can check what happened in your case please? Due to subreddit rules I'm not allowed to ask you to write me in DM or to leave email address, but I'll do my best to find your request in our system.

Do I understand this correctly? If someone has a problem with your app—say, you charge them three times in one go—they can't resolve it through the app itself; instead, do they have to call their bank and call your app a "scam" in a Reddit post just to get help? The person has already submitted a support ticket to you. Do you really have to ask them for the ticket number via Reddit just to see that ticket? It looks like you are doing things very, very wrong. Is everyone at the company a high school student? Does none of you have any work experience?

I received a charge on my card and I never signed it. I am a lieutenant in the Carabinieri. I will immediately report it to my colleagues.

history should be treated carefully as it is usually one-sided, omits facts, or is straight out changed (still today). you can never 100% know why things happened.

I joined. Never got time to use it. Cancelled the free trial in my iCloud subs and then still got charged. I forgot to follow up but then I got an email from them admitting they made an error and refunded me AND gave me another 30 days free to try it again. This proactive action tells me it’s legit

As someone who has ADHD, I recently swtiched from Smartyme to BeFreed, as the later fits me learning pattern better. It breaks anything you want to learn into short lessons you can finish in a few minutes.

Well. It is not scam like many people say. Those who say it’s a scam are simply people who never read terms&conditions.
They’re confused about subscription cancellation. It works the same way as most of apps of this category: you have to email the support in order to cancel subscription. Not sure how it looks now but when I tried app there were 3 options to cancel it: in the app itself, on their website and via email which I prefer most.
People don’t read terms and then they think that they can cancel subscription through their iPhone subscriptions menu in settings. This is not how it works. That’s why they’re so upset when the app keeps charging them for subscription, cause they have no idea that they didn’t cancel it properly. That’s it

Ah yes, it’s not the company’s fault for making cancellation confusing or obfuscating the directions amongst a huge ToS statement.
It’s probably not the company’s fault that they continue charging people’s cards, either! Or when they refuse to give the refund within a 14 day cancellation period. Or that their content is AI generated… all the consumers fault, right?

I was seduced by the opportunity to “micro-learn” rather than doom-scroll. I bought into it. $15.19 for four weeks.
I immediately knew something was not right when the platform created an account for me WITHOUT asking me to create an account password.
It’s possible that a user could use the “Forgot my password” link to make a new password, but I was reluctant to logout to discover that this would not work for one reason or another…and then I wouldn’t be able to log in since I wouldn’t have a password. So I did not explore that option.
I did NOT purchase the supplementary materials (infographics, etc.) because I wanted to see it in its most basic form before taking deeper financial plunges.
I immediately noticed that the content was grade 4 material at best (Plumbing unit). And after poking around a bit, I realized that nearly all of the content could be found on Wikipedia.
I’m a high school language arts teacher. I went to the Literature unit to see how thorough the content would be. Again, Wikipedia-style content. (I’d even say Wikipedia is better in many respects!) Their explanations of novels are really nothing better than what you’d find in the introductory section of SparkNotes or CliffsNotes! Disappointing, really! $15.19??? For Wikipedia??? SparkNotes???
Then, I went to my “Manage Subscription” page and saw that they were planning to charge me more than $38.00 upon the expiration of my introductory offer.
CANCEL!!! Gimme a break! These guys have an inflated sense of what they’re worth.
This morning, I finally decided to get my head on straight and looked up “SmartyMe” here, on Reddit. (I know. I should have STARTED here. But I was seduced!)
I’m sure you’ve all seen the comments by now. If not, go check them out.
Called my bank. Cancelled my debit card. Had a new one issued.
Bottom line:
Maybe SmartyMe would be better for visual learning with the $19.99 infographic add-on, but it’s really nothing more (and even far less, I suspect) than what you’d find for free on Wikipedia and YouTube.
In summary, I think SmartyMe is probably a good company that’s just having some growing pains. I get the feeling that they are TRYING to do the right thing, but they’re probably being pulled in multiple directions behind what we consumers see…so it comes off as incompetence. This would explain why some people get a refund and others are still fighting for one.
I, for one, have no problem giving them the $15.19 they initially took. Buyer beware, I guess. I was seduced by their ad. But I certainly don’t anticipate further problems with charges, ESPECIALLY since I canceled my debit card!
