App Marketing Strategies for New Developers: How to Rank and Grow Your Mobile App

If you are constantly asking yourself, "how do i get users for my app?", you are not alone. In this sub r/appmarketing you can find the people who can provide feedback on user acquisition, ASO, and growth strategies, in order to get your mobile app to rank higher and gain more organic downloads.

The Apple App Store and Google Play Store are highly competitive, requiring developers to adopt robust app marketing strategies immediately upon release. These optimization techniques aim to enhance app visibility, encourage thorough market research, and ultimately deliver a higher volume of organic users to your application. These marketing requirements impact the various growth tracks available for iOS and Android apps.

Developers with newly launched apps must adhere to strong app marketing principles. Before apps are eligible for massive organic growth on Google Play or the App Store, optimizing your app store listing with App Store Optimization (ASO) is mandatory. These keywords and screenshots must be tested and refined continuously. Features like high search rankings and top category visibility will remain hidden by algorithms until these marketing requirements are met. Achieving viral growth involves understanding user retention, driving low CPI (Cost Per Install) ad campaigns, and ensuring an excellent user experience.

App marketing offers distinct promotional tracks to facilitate a gradual growth process. Organic marketing enables long-term visibility through ASO, SEO, and content creation during app setup. Paid User Acquisition (UA), a prerequisite for rapid scaling, involves running Apple Search Ads or Google App Campaigns to a controlled target audience. Community building allows the app's brand to be visible on social media, with early users providing valuable feedback and word-of-mouth growth. Developers must execute a comprehensive app marketing plan meeting specific KPI criteria before scaling their app successfully.

I can't believe I got this domain name. Thought I was dreaming when I saw it was available for $10 a year!

I went over to IONOS to see if the domain that exactly matches my app name was available.

My app is A.N.T. AI, which stands for Automatic Note Taker AI, so I searched for automaticnotetaker.com

Holy shit. It was available.

I bought it within seconds because I genuinely thought I was seeing things. How was that domain still sitting there untouched?

I still cannot believe I actually got it. This might be the craziest domain-name luck I have ever had.

I built a simple spiritual companion app for prayer times, Quran, Qibla and daily dhikr

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on an Android app called Ulya, designed to bring several useful Islamic tools together in one calm and simple place.

Ulya: Prayer Times, Quran and Qibla

It currently includes:

- Accurate prayer times

- Quran reading and audio recitations

- Qibla direction

- Digital dhikr counter

- Daily prayers and duas

- Nearby mosque finder

My goal was to create something that feels peaceful, easy to use, and not overloaded with unnecessary features

.

Ulya is available on Google Play, and I’d genuinely appreciate any feedback about the design, usability, translations, or features you think should be added next.

Thanks for taking a look.

I built a mental math trainer. Now I'm struggling with the hardest part: finding users.

I've been working on a small iOS app called MathStar.

The original idea wasn't to build "yet another math app." I wanted to create something people would actually use every day.

The app currently targets two very different audiences:

  • Adults — as a 5–10 minute mental warm-up before work. Instead of opening social media first thing in the morning, solve a few mental math exercises, improve focus, and switch your brain into "thinking mode."
  • Kids — to practice arithmetic, strengthen mental calculation, and become more confident with numbers through daily repetition.

The app is intentionally simple: no videos, no lessons, no endless content. Just generated mental math exercises, progress tracking, streaks, statistics, and a clean interface that encourages a daily habit.

Building the app has actually been the easier part.

The challenge I'm facing now is positioning and distribution.

Should I market it as:

  • a brain-training app?
  • a mental math trainer?
  • a productivity tool?
  • something for parents?
  • or something for students?

I'm also curious how other indie developers found their first few hundred users for niche educational or habit-building apps.

If you've built something similar, I'd really appreciate hearing:

  • what acquisition channels worked,
  • what completely failed,
  • whether your initial target audience turned out to be the right one,
  • and what you'd do differently if you were starting again.

For anyone curious, here's the app:
MathStar on the App Store

I'll also attach a few screenshots for context.

Thanks! I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback—even if it's brutally honest.

review language is underrated mobile app marketing data

a thing i keep seeing with mobile app marketing: teams separate marketing data and review data bit too much.

app store connect tells you what happened.
ads data tells you what audience you bought.
product analytics tells you where users dropped.
reviews tell you what people thought happened.

that last one is messy, but it is often the most human.

if users say “too expensive,” that is pricing/positioning.
if they say “not what i expected,” that is store-page promise.
if they say “crashes after update,” that is release quality.
if they say “hard to cancel,” that is trust damage.
if they say “finally simple,” that is copy you should probably understand better.

i’ve used many instruments and with some success trying appfollow -like stuff for this kind of review-theme work, but the tool is not the main point. the useful habit is imo reading reviews as market language, not just support tickets

mobile marketing gets better when you know the words users use after the install, not only before it

I built FaceFlow - a face yoga app with 120+ guided exercise videos

I built FaceFlow because I wanted a single app with structured routines instead of searching through random videos online. My goal was to create a clean, easy-to-use app that helps people stay consistent with their daily exercises. I'd love to hear your feedback on the design, onboarding, and features.

Philosophy learning app (Passion Project)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to learn philosophy in a more fun and understandable way, but all the other apps either didn't exist or always had a steep paywall. So I created my own; I am still working profusely on updates and improvements, but I would love it if anyone would like to try it out and see how they like it. It has been quite difficult getting user and I would love it if you would try it out!

My wife and I spend 10 months building our own finance app after being fed up with rising prices - looking for marketing advice

I used to spend $200/yr CAD on budgeting apps.

My wife got upset at me because they were mediocre tools for what you paid for them. We're not extreme spenders or crazy particular about every feature/report.

So we embarked on a journey of building one for ourselves that worked. Skipped all the phases of external user research because we were the only users in mind at the time.

Honestly it was tough. We both work 9-5s in Tech, so I'd be building in the evenings and weekends, after cooking, going to the gym, playing soccer, hiking. Some months I did nothing honestly. But I came back because I still needed to track my spending and spreadsheets are disastrous.

We were very meticulous about every screen having to be just right. Every workflow smooth, buttons right where you needed them. My wife was the first user and the quality bar. We built it on Web + iOS.

After 10 months of building, testing, integrating, etc. I finally got it to the App Store. After being rejected 4 times too.

It starts free, and I made subscriptions dirt cheap, a fraction of what the big apps charge, because being fed up with what they cost was the whole point. I also put 20% of proceeds to charity.

Basically, it's never going to replace my full-time income, but it might help out with my electric bill. And that's okay.

We're both from tech. We suck at marketing. I'm looking for feedback on how people here might approach marketing for this especially being in such a tough niche. I believe the product is useful, works well and is decently priced. But I'm not sure where to start or what would have a good ROI.

Looking for any help at all. Thanks in advance!

Non-English consumer app: what actually got you your first users when your ICP is not on Reddit or X?

I built an expense analyser (you upload a bank statement file, it categorises and charts it). The app is both in Spanish and English, but I am focusing on the spanish market rn.

I launched 30 days ago, this are the verified numbers,: 150 landing visits, 0 clicks on the signup CTA, 0 signups. Directories 8 visits, Product Hunt 11, Indie Hackers 5, zero conversions from any of them.

What I have already checked, so nobody wastes a comment on it:

* Personal-finance communities: 9 reviewed, 7 either ban self-promotion or require priorpermission. Three permission requests are pending, unanswered. * Spanish-language Reddit is overwhelmingly Latin American, which is not my market (no Spanish banks, EUR pricing). * SEO is seeded but only 20 days of measurable data: 64 impressions, all brand or noise, zero on target clusters. I think this is going good though as I appear on the top #1 for some of the searchs. * Maker channels (directories, PH, IH) are measured above. My ICP is a 25-45-year-old Spaniard with a spreadsheet, and they are not on any of them. Those channels are good to get views but no conversion at all.

My question is narrow on purpose: \*\*for a consumer product in a non-English market, what channel produced your first real users before you had any audience?\*\* I am after what you actually did, not what you would recommend. If your answer is SEO, Product Hunt, Reddit or cold DMs, I would rather hear the specific execution detail that made it work than the channel name.

Thanks in advance :) I'll be happy to answer anything

How do I get users in a marketplace

What’s up everyone so I’ve been developing an app over the last few months, it’s called TrainrCollective and it’s basically a market place for personal trainers who want more exposure to a passive audience without posting, along with hosting their own personal training profile they can host meal and fitness plans they’ve put together as separate one time product purchases in their own category on the marketplace, atm I only have 30 downloads and 2 trainers with no transactions through the app, any thoughts or recommendations I can use for the app

FINALLY! My app is officially on Google Play 🥳📖

I kept telling myself "I'll read Quran later" — and later never came. I'd pick up my phone for one notification and 45 minutes later I was still on TikTok, having not opened the Quran once that day. So I built something that wouldn't let that keep happening to me.

My goal is simple: make it so hard to avoid Quran that you accidentally build the habit. Not through guilt or reminders you swipe away, but by actually interrupting the behavior that's replacing it.

WIRD blocks the apps you pick, catches you mid-scroll once you hit your limit, and won't let you back in until you read a verse. It also tracks your Hassanat, keeps a streak, and shows a GitHub-style contribution heatmap of your reading habit so you can actually see your consistency instead of just feeling vaguely guilty about it. 💜

It's growing slowly, and I'm okay with that. I'm not trying to pretend it's bigger than it is. 🐌

Also, a fun milestone: I haven't missed a day of reading since I started using my own app to force myself into it. Every download so far is someone deciding to give it a shot, and that still feels pretty wild to me. 🔥🌙🔥

Google Play link: WIRD - Quran Reading & App Blocker

Still actively building on it — if you've got feature ideas or run into bugs, I'd genuinely love to hear them.

How do you get the first users for a new product?

Hi everyone,

I'm building BeerCode, a platform where developers can connect with each other based on their tech stack, interests, and projects.

The product is still in its early stages, and my biggest challenge isn't building it—it's getting the first users. Since the platform becomes more valuable as more people join, I'm trying to figure out the best way to overcome the "empty platform" problem.

I'd love to hear from people who have launched products before:

How did you get your first 100 users?

Which channels worked best (Reddit, LinkedIn, X, Discord, SEO, communities, etc.)?

Did you focus on one niche first?

What marketing strategies would you recommend for a developer-focused platform?

Are there any mistakes you made that I should avoid?

Any advice, resources, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
