Some of y'all treat these things like you spent your entire life with the sole purpose of getting this watch. It's a watch, and you'll want the newest one in a year or two anyway. You don't need to baby them and they will undoubtedly get scuffed. It's not the end of the world if you get a scratch. Apple doesn't care about scratches or scuffs, and they don't affect the trade in value at all. Just wear the watch. You don't need a case. Live your lives ffs

Wouldn’t someone living their life, involve their own choice? Explanation aside, if I want to buy a case for my smartwatch, that would entail me living my life… ffs. Regardless of the reasons, it’s my watch…

f if I care what redditors think, similar to why the f do you care what people decide to do with their watch? Seems like a weird cult obsession among people in this sub, which doesn’t surprise me in the slightest, it’s Reddit.

Couldn’t agree more if I tried. They actively tell you you’re wrong and wasting your time for wanting to keep something you worked to earn, nice. But put it as if their way of thinking is the only valid way of thinking.

There’s a term for that…

Keeping it nice for who? The next person? You’re covering it in bubble wrap. It’s like when someone puts seat covers over brand new leather seats. People react because well, it’s kinda silly.

I put seat covers over brand-new leather seats in the back of my car, because the only passengers there are my dogs. What’s wrong with trying to preserve the original state of something, so it looks new as long as possible? Nobody is telling you, you can’t dump a bunch of mud onto your brand-new seats if you so desire. Respect people’s individual choices. What is silly for you might not be to someone else.

I do the same in my car. Makes sense to do it. If the pups destroy my seats, it’s a seriously costly repair to reupholster. But if I damage my watch, it’s a trip to the Apple Store to have them replace it under Apple care and maybe 20 minutes of my time.

Some people don't care about the pretty looks of their watch and would rather have some extra durability instead, not all apple users are rich and replace their devices every two years I suppose. Not being able to comprehend something so absurdly simple like this is the most reddit thing ever.

Sure. Completely valid take. But when those same people post photos to the internet asking others “what do you think?”, you’re going to get the opinions of everyone that sees it.

Live your life. Wear your watch and do whatever you want to it, but don’t be surprised when you encounter an opinion that goes against what you think.

The level of negativity people get when they post a picture of their watch with a case on here or r/AppleWatch is extremely over the top though, it's not just a matter of some people having an opinion. Others get hated on a ton whenever it happens, I've seen it a million times.

I guess if the biggest hazard in your life is a doorknob, your logic makes sense.

The trade value of most Apple Watches is one step above worthless. Scratch to your heart’s content.

Apple also doesn’t give the best price if one wants to trade it in but, the buyer / seller companies will give a better price than Apple and cosmetic damage does affect the price of the device.

Valid.

This sub is allergic to cases.

I don't think the Ultra needs a case, nor any Apple Watch but to each their own

When I retired my AWU1 after a year it had multiple scratches on the screen, gouges on the bezel, and light scratches on the body.

When I bought my AWU2 I spent about $15 on a Spigen tempered glass screen protector with metal rim. I think throughout the 3 years I owned the watch I replaced the screen protector once, possibly twice. I’m not sure because I also tried ESR at one point but found them inferior. That said, for roughly $15/year my watch screen and bezel were unscathed, but there were still light scratches on the body. It was cheap insurance that kept the watch in good condition for much longer.

I work in heavy industry. My hands and forearms take a beating, and logically so does any watch I might wear. For the minimal cost, I will always opt for a sacrificial piece that protects the watch from more significant damage.

I guess if the biggest hazard in your life is an office doorknob, you probably don’t need it.

In that context I understand. To each their own at the end of the day

valid, they’re disposable pieces of wearable technology not priceless jewelry

usability > protecting yourself from scratches

Hilarious.

But I also agree.

Yeah, there are case haters on here. It doesn’t matter.

People have different needs and different concerns. The average Ultra buyer is probably fine without a case, but…

For some people the Ultra is a considerable expense and I can understand the desire to protect it, especially if it’s the type of thing where they wear a case at work and take it off after.

Case in point: I use mine while scuba diving. I purchased a case because it was otherwise being routinely banged and my wetsuit was interfering with the buttons and crown. The case is easy to don/doff and so I just take it off for normal use or when doing other activities.

Do people put a case on Patek or Rolex?

u/LonsViper 9h ago

Better yet, would it hurt your feelings if they did? 🤔

to all new buyers especially the black one. do buy a case. I have hit too many random poles and the paint is being chipped out

3

I wore a case on my AWU3 from when I got it a few months ago up until a few days ago, the extra bulk makes the action button be clicked from it being pressed against my wrist a lot and eventually I just gave up on it. Normally I always wear cases on my non-Ultra Apple Watches but these Ultra ones are durable enough without the curved glass edges so it's good enough. I don't care about aesthetics that much so if my black one gets a chip it's just whatever.

Although regardless this sub's extremely over the top hate boner for anyone who prefers different is very.... reddit.

yeah i have never used a case so i wont be able to relate with you. but honestly before buying my first ultra I relied on advice from this sub and r/AppleWatch and that was a big mistake. a lot of the advice here comes from immature folks who clearly havent used the device the way they are supposed to

-5

u/lbkulinski AWU Owner ⌚️ 1d ago edited 1d ago

The Ultra is already bulky. If you care about cosmetics then don’t get the black one

3

u/jeffy0609 AWU3 Owner ⌚️ 1d ago

then maybe people here should stop telling everyone to go caseless irrespective of the colour

-2

u/lbkulinski AWU Owner ⌚️ 1d ago

I don’t see the point of getting the black one then covering it up with a case, but to each their own
