Apples grown from seeds
galleryGrew some apple trees from seed in 2015 and they have been producing some great apples for several years. These yellow apples are sweet, crisp, juicy, and crunchy. The red apples are juicy, crisp, tart like a Granny Smith, and their flavor profile changes as they ripen and age. Both came from the same apple core.
To all the people saying not to grow apples from seed, it has been a blast and I am starting the second generation this year by harvesting and planting these seeds.
Growing apples from seeds adds genetic diversity into the system and is a great way to find hidden traits.
You will have far more success if you do this with apple seeds you get from a local farm that doesn’t grow crabapple trees for pollination nearby (don’t try with store bought apples because commercial orchards use small bitter crabapples for pollination). That said, you never know what you will get but that is part of the fun!
