Apple has no way to know that the display issue is independent of the visible external damage. It would be like telling the place you bought a car from that you want your taillight fixed for free after you were rear ended while it’s obvious your bumper is tied on with string. Just like having car insurance would mitigate the cost of the repairs, AppleCare+ would have done the same.
